Currently there are over 200 EMBA programs worldwide. These programs have grown in popularity and have increased by over a third in the last three years. Overall, schools are aggressively marketing their EMBA programs, and, as a consequence, prospective EMBA participants have numerous options for EMBA program enrollment. To successfully compete in the current environment, EMBA programs must understand and market to the expectations of prospective EMBAs. This paper explores the suitability of using the Teaching Goals Inventory (TGI) developed by Angelo and Cross (1993) as an instrument to analyze the expectations of EMBA candidates in the United States and …

Student Preferences For Common Or Unique Assignments: Some Early Evidence, Erwin Waldmann, Janek Ratnatunga, Marshall A. Geiger
Student Preferences For Common Or Unique Assignments: Some Early Evidence, Erwin Waldmann, Janek Ratnatunga, Marshall A. Geiger
Accounting Faculty Publications
Accounting assignments and homework exercises that use identical problem material for all students encourage plagiarism. Giving each individual student a unique assignment alleviates this problem, but raises other issues such as the lack of co-operative learning and grading parity. This paper examines students' attitudes towards both common and unique accounting assignments. The results indicate that a large majority of students preferred the unique assignments and perceived getting a high grade on these assignments as more rewarding and reflective of higher learning than similar grades on common assignments. Attitudinal variables for the validity of grading, perceptions regarding plagiarism, and perceptions of …

This study incorporates principles derived from ‘mindful technology adoption’, instructional design, technology acceptance models, and target learner needs assessments in order to determine whether or not e-learning technologies would be used by multi-organizational health administrators in their re-accreditation processes. It was initially hypothesized that these nontraditional, geographically dispersed, computer literate learners would be likely to use the elearning technologies, due to course flexibility, their full time work status, age and other variables. Results indicate that the sample had lower than expected intentions to use online learning resources, predictions that they would to use online learning resources, and plans to use …
The Systematic Evaluation Of A Strategic Management Program In An Irish Institute Of Technology, Deirdre Lillis
The Systematic Evaluation Of A Strategic Management Program In An Irish Institute Of Technology, Deirdre Lillis
Conference papers
Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) worldwide are investing significant resources in strategic planning and self-evaluation programs to improve institutional performance and to meet external stakeholder demands. Little empirical evidence exists however which demonstrates that these programs are effective in leading to improvements in institutional performance, let alone shed light on the reasons why. This paper reports on the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of a Strategic Management program in an Irish HEI over a five year period in leading to improvements in institutional performance.
On-Line Training For Smes: Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Sue Stoney
On-Line Training For Smes: Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Sue Stoney
Research outputs pre 2011
This research aimed to explore the appropriateness of on-line training delivery methods for small business owner/managers.
It is widely recognised that training and education are effective ways to reduce small business failure. In Australia, small business accounts for 96 percent of Australian private sector, non-agricultural businesses and they employ 47 percent of the private sector, non-agricultural workforce. Not surprisingly then, encouraging the development of the skills of the workforce has emerged as a major priority for government policy. However, what is also recognised is that many small business owner/managers (SBOs) have limited e-competencies.
Results of this research confirmed this and …
Managing School Success: A Case Study From Pakistan, John Retallick
Managing School Success: A Case Study From Pakistan, John Retallick
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This article reports on case study research into the management of successful schools in a developing country, Pakistan. In Pakistan there are attempts being made to improve school education through decentralisation and involving school communities through School Management Committees. Whilst serious problems remain in the provision of quality school education, there are nevertheless, some successful schools and the research sought to identify three such schools and investigate how and to what extent the management of the schools was contributing to their success. In the article a case study of one of the schools is reported along with the findings from …

This paper reports the results of a survey of postgraduate students at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, the University of Melbourne in Australia, Monash University in Australia, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the National University of Ireland, Galway regarding their perceptions of cases versus lectures. The respondents to our survey to prefer lectures in introductory courses and cases when used to supplement lectures or used in advanced upper level courses. They agree that cases are an effective way to provide them with an organizational context that enhances their understanding of the subject matter and how it relates to …

Use Of An Advising Team, Jane E. Campbell, Randy Stuart
Faculty and Research Publications
The Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University uses selected faculty members on an Advising Team, and provides access to them through walk-in advising hours. Compared to our previous approach of assigning students to all faculty members, the benefits of this system for the students are more efficient and effective advising. Students have access to advising at more times, and are more likely to get correct answers quickly. The benefits for the faculty are that the faculty members on the Team enjoy advising and can have their performance expectations tailored to include advising, while those faculty members …

Using A Web-Based Supply Chain Management Simulation As An Experiential Learning Tool Across The Business Curriculum, Russell Haines, Jill Hough, Douglas Haines, Scott Metlen
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
A web based version of the common "Beer Distribution Game" that facilitates experiential learning was developed and tested for use across the business curriculum. While the fundamental elements of the original paper based game were preserved, the web-based on-line multiplayer version offers refinements to game play, administration and debriefing that allow more focus on the learning experience and open possible applications beyond the traditional one-time demonstration of the bullwhip effect. The web-based supply chain management simulation was tested and refined in Strategic Management courses and Integrated Business Curriculum courses at two widely separated universities. Students responded favorably to the on-line …

Education, Technological Progress And Economic Growth, Winston T. H. Koh, Hing-Man Leung

An important role of education – and the resultant accumulation of human capital – for a less-developed economy is to facilitate technology diffusion in order for it to catch up with developed economies. This paper presents a model linking education, the accumulation of physical capital and technological progress. In the model, investment in education and the accumulation of physical capital are complementary, and intertwine with the technology progress through related effects on technology diffusion and the expansion of the technology frontier. The allocation of effort to education, the optimal savings rate and the technology gap are endogenously determined in the …
