Distinguishing Owner Compensation From Profit In Closely Held Companies: In Search Of A Responsibility Premium, Michael Sack Elmaleh Jun 2008

Distinguishing Owner Compensation From Profit In Closely Held Companies: In Search Of A Responsibility Premium, Michael Sack Elmaleh

Michael Sack Elmaleh

The application of the income method of valuation requires that owner compensation be distinguished from free cash flow. The “proper” parsing of compensation and free cash flow can be the largest point of contention in contested valuation disputes. The preferred method of parsing is the substitution method which says that the proper allocation should be based on the wage that would have to be paid to a non owner employee. In this article I argue that owner employees carry additional responsibilities that are not normally borne by non owner employees. These additional responsibilities require that a premium be paid the …

Pre-Test Assessment, Thomas D. Berry May 2008

Pre-Test Assessment, Thomas D. Berry

Thomas D Berry

Pre-tests are a non-graded assessment tool used to determine pre-existing subject knowledge. Typically pre-tests are administered prior to a course to determine knowledge baseline, but here they are used to test students prior to topical material coverage throughout the course. While counterintuitive, the pre-tests cover material the student is not expected to know, but serve as a motivational tool and a road map for the students, resulting in improved course performance.

The Relationship Between Poverty And Economic Growth Revisited, Lonnie K. Stevans, David N. Sessions Mar 2008

The Relationship Between Poverty And Economic Growth Revisited, Lonnie K. Stevans, David N. Sessions

Lonnie K. Stevans

It has been shown in prior research that increased economic growth reduces poverty. Authors have also found that the effect of growth in GDP on poverty growth has either diminished or remained unchanged over time and the 1980s economic expansion in the U.S. had no affect on poverty. Using a formal error-correction model, we find that increases in economic growth are significantly related to reductions in the poverty rate for all families. Specifically, GDP growth was found to have a more pronounced effect on poverty during the expansionary periods of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Other findings include …

Building And Construction Trades Unions: Are They Built To Win?, Jeff Grabelsky Jan 2008

Building And Construction Trades Unions: Are They Built To Win?, Jeff Grabelsky

Jeffrey Grabelsky

[Excerpt] The evidence of labor's declining power in the economic and political arenas is increasingly clear. Despite the tenacious efforts of talented leaders over the past ten years, the labor movement has still failed to turn the proverbial cornet. Some labor leaders now believe that a dramatic change in strategic direction may be necessary to revitalize labor's fortunes. The emerging debate about labor's future touches every sector of the movement. The building and construction trades are no exception.

How Much Should We Care About Changing Income Inequality In The Course Of Economic Growth?, Gary S. Fields Jan 2008

How Much Should We Care About Changing Income Inequality In The Course Of Economic Growth?, Gary S. Fields

Gary S Fields

This paper asks how much we should care about changes in Lorenz curves and standard inequality measures when economic growth takes place. I conclude that these changes are of some importance but that other aspects of inequality and poverty are more important.

Leading For The Bottom Line: A View Of Leadership In A Bottom-Line Context, Gary S. Fields , Cory Stern Jan 2008

Leading For The Bottom Line: A View Of Leadership In A Bottom-Line Context, Gary S. Fields , Cory Stern

Gary S Fields

This paper sets out to establish and describe a new approach to leadership called Bottom Line Leadership. The essence of Bottom Line Leadership is that a leader’s most critical responsibility is to clearly identify, communicate and gain buy-in for the ultimate bottom-line objective of the organization he/she leads, subject to constraints imposed by the market and by the organization itself. In comparison to other leadership models that focus on the general attributes or behaviors characterizing effective leaders, Bottom Line Leadership emphasizes the link between an organization’s purpose and a leader’s behavior. The philosophy that serves as the foundation for this …

Insider Trading: Incoherent In Theory, Inefficient In Practice, Eric A. Engle

Eric A. Engle

Insider trading: The words alone evoke conflicting feelings of jealousy and greed. But what is wrong with insider trading? Nothing. In fact, insider trading is good for the economy. Insider trading results in an efficient allocation of capital and thus makes the world wealthier.

Space Settlements, Property Rights, And International Law: Could A Lunar Settlement Claim The Lunar Real Estate It Needs To Survive?, Alan Wasser, Douglas Jobes Jan 2008

Space Settlements, Property Rights, And International Law: Could A Lunar Settlement Claim The Lunar Real Estate It Needs To Survive?, Alan Wasser, Douglas Jobes

Alan Wasser

The settlement of space and the expansion of the habitat of humanity beyond Earth will benefit all mankind but will be astronomically expensive. Private enterprise would do it if there were a sufficient profit potential, something only Lunar and Martian real estate is valuable enough to provide. Utilization of this tremendous potential value as an incentive has been prevented by the mistaken assumption that the 1967 Outer Space Treaty's prohibition of "national appropriation" and requirement of national supervision of private activities prohibit private property in space. This paper attempts to demonstrate, by expert legal consensus, that the 1967 Outer Space …

The Genesis Creation Sequence: The Principles Of Social Choice Theory Impossibility-Resolution, David Randall Jenkins Jan 2008

The Genesis Creation Sequence: The Principles Of Social Choice Theory Impossibility-Resolution, David Randall Jenkins

David Randall Jenkins

The Genesis Creation Sequence is not about the creation of the physical world, per se. Rather, it is about the resolution of conflict in the philosophy of the human condition.

Do R&D Programs Of Different Government Levels Overlap In The European Union?, Andrea Fernandez-Ribas, Isabel Busom Jan 2008

Do R&D Programs Of Different Government Levels Overlap In The European Union?, Andrea Fernandez-Ribas, Isabel Busom

Andrea Fernandez-Ribas

Multiple levels of government currently design and implement research and innovation programs both in the US and in Europe. Empirical analysis of interdependencies among programs has not been fully explored, however. Our contribution is a first step in understanding potential complementarities across R&D programs. Using a sample of Spanish manufacturing firms, we study the determinants of firms’ participation in national and in European level research programs and test for differences across programs. Our results suggest that firms’ participation in European and national R&D programs is largely driven by different factors. We interpret these results as suggesting that, ex-post, there is …

De Evoluerende Marktpositie Van Beschutte Werkplaatsen In Vlaanderen: Uitdagingen En Knelpunten, Wim Van Opstal, Jozef Pacolet Jan 2008

De Evoluerende Marktpositie Van Beschutte Werkplaatsen In Vlaanderen: Uitdagingen En Knelpunten, Wim Van Opstal, Jozef Pacolet

Wim Van Opstal

Coöperaties In De Social Profit? Een Verkenning., Wim Van Opstal Jan 2008

Coöperaties In De Social Profit? Een Verkenning., Wim Van Opstal

Wim Van Opstal

Endogenous Categorization In Insurance, Mattias K. Polborn Jan 2008

Endogenous Categorization In Insurance, Mattias K. Polborn

Mattias K Polborn

This paper analyzes the welfare properties of equilibrium when insurers use observable actions to classify consumers into different risk categories, and consumers' choice is influenced by the insurance market consequences of their actions. Specifically, we analyze this problem at the example of a car insurance market, in which individual preferences over car types are correlated with risk type and used by insurance firms for ratemaking. Equilibrium premiums for each car are determined by the losses that it generates. Consumers take insurance premiums into account when deciding which car to buy. This creates an incentive to buy the car that is …

Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar Jan 2008

Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar

Mario Šilar

The paper explores John Rawls´s idea of public reason, as reflected in Political Liberalism and The Idea of Public Reason Revisited. In Rawls’s later works, public reason acquires fundamental significance as a criterion by which the principles to be assumed from the outset in a theory of political justice may be determined. The starting-point for Rawls´s theory -the idea of citizens as free and equal reveals- that this abstraction falls short of an authentic conception of human beings as social by nature. A brief study of key issues concerning marriage and the family shows the difficulties that underlie this question. …
