Digital Technology And The Transformation Of The Nigerian Banking System: The Operators’ Perspective, Ireti Samuel-Ogbu
Digital Technology And The Transformation Of The Nigerian Banking System: The Operators’ Perspective, Ireti Samuel-Ogbu
Economic and Financial Review
The rapid development of digital technology through the years, and the rails provided by the internet for connectivity remains the most important development that has impacted change and driven massive improvement in the operation of banking and financial services. It has brought in its wake huge disruptions in product roll-out and the way products are delivered. The entry of technology companies into financial services cannot be overlooked in discussing these changes. Nigeria has not been left behind in this evolution. Instead, the Nigerian banking industry has been the forerunner in digital initiatives in Africa that have transformed the banking and …

Digital Financial Services And Financial Inclusion In Nigeria: Milestones And New Directions, Chioma G. Nkechika
Economic and Financial Review
Digital Financial Services are ushering in an age of financial innovation and convenience with technology as the driver. It aims at solving several needs of the public, helping the governments tackle newer problems and identify the potentials of new technology that may be conceived in a competitive landscape. The aim of financial inclusion is to bring as many unserved and underserved Nigerians into the formal financial sector. Thus, digital financial services are revealing gaps in the market that will allow the Federal government intervene and cater to more members of the public than ever, using technology.
Adoption Of The Enaira: Issues And The Way Forward, Biodun Adedipe
Adoption Of The Enaira: Issues And The Way Forward, Biodun Adedipe
Economic and Financial Review
As cryptocurrencies evolved and became more popular, it became obvious that the world was trending towards monetary disintegration and oversight reversal. It was becoming fashionable for technology-motivated products to be developed either to reduce or eliminate regulation of monetary transactions. The monetary system was gradually moving towards opacity that could create a ‘safe environment’ for illegal activities and open a new vista for money laundering. This of course, should be of grave concern to any monetary authority or government.
A Comparison Of M&T Bank And Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Alex R. Glasier
A Comparison Of M&T Bank And Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Alex R. Glasier
Applied Economics Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on every aspect of life, particularly within the world of banking & finance. All banks saw sharp drops in their stock prices and net income, but my hypothesis is that larger, more established banks maintained more stability during 2020 than smaller banks. This paper analyzes the income statements and balance sheets of M&T Bank (an older, more well-established bank) and Citizens Bank (a less-established bank) during this difficult time.
The first part of my thesis describes similarities and differences between M&T Bank and Citizens Bank. I explain how these similarities and differences may …

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
The 16 participants in the December Livingston Survey weakened their forecasts for real GDP growth, compared with their projections in the June 2022 survey. The forecasters, who are surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia twice a year, expect 2.0 percent annualized growth in real GDP during the second half of 2022. They project 0.4 percent annualized growth over the first half of 2023. The forecasters predict that real GDP will continue to decline and reach -1.0 percent annualized growth in the second half of 2023.
Comparing Hospital Costs & Lengths Of Stay For Cancer Patients In New York State Comprehensive Cancer Centers Vs. Non-Designated Academic Centers & Community Hospitals, Ryan Fodero
Economics Student Scholarship
This paper explores differences in costs and lengths of stay for cancer patients admitted to National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, non-designated academic medical centers, and community hospitals in New York State using patient-level data from the New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System Hospital Inpatient Discharges dataset from 2017-2019. We employ ordinary least squares and Poisson regressions to compare hospital costs and length of stay for cancer patients, controlling for hospital type, patient demographics, and patient health. Inpatient costs were 27% higher, but length of stay was 12% shorter, in comprehensive cancer centers relative to community hospitals. …
A Welfare Comparison Of Historical Cost And Fair Value Accounting Regimes, Palmer Edholm
A Welfare Comparison Of Historical Cost And Fair Value Accounting Regimes, Palmer Edholm
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
With ongoing controversy concerning fair value and historical cost accounting, existing accounting theory is focused on intra-firm decision making and is thus deficient in addressing the issue of maximizing social welfare. I propose models of historical cost and fair value accounting regimes which are embedded in models of monopoly and oligopoly. This allows for social welfare implications. I find that historical cost results in greater expected profits for both monopolists and oligopolists. However, if the market is elastic enough, a fair value regimes is welfare enhancing. Whereas, if the market is inelastic enough, historical cost is welfare enhancing.
Empowering Older Adults With Their Information Privacy Management, Reza Ghaiumy Anaraky
Empowering Older Adults With Their Information Privacy Management, Reza Ghaiumy Anaraky
All Dissertations
Literature depicts a deficit-based narrative around older adults and their technology use, suggesting that older adults are not able to keep up with their younger counterparts in adopting new technologies. In this dissertation, I argue that this view is not necessarily accurate or productive. Instead, I argue that the deficit is in the technology design, which is not inclusive and often caters to the needs of younger adults.
I study older and younger adults' privacy decision-making as a showcase. To study the privacy decision-making process with more granularity, I used a dual-route approach (decision heuristics and privacy calculus) to disentangle …

We study a dynamic stopping game between a principal and an agent. The agent is privately informed about his type. The principal learns about the agent’s type from a noisy performance measure, which can be manipulated by the agent via a costly and hidden action. We fully characterize the unique Markov equilibrium of this game. We find that terminations/ market crashes are often preceded by a spike in (expected) performance. Our model also predicts that, due to endogenous signal manipulation, too much transparency can inhibit learning. As the players get arbitrarily patient, the principal elicits no useful information from the …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 30, 2022, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N fell by 0.12% in October 2022. The leading indicator, which is designed to predict economic growth six months in the future, has fallen in four of the last six months. Such a decline signals a stagnant economy in Nebraska at the beginning of 2023. Four components of the leading indicator worsened during October. There was an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance, signaling some softening of the Nebraska labor market. There was also an increase in the value of the U.S. Dollar in October. A rising dollar creates challenges for Nebraska businesses that compete in international markets. …

A case study of the MGM College Opportunity Program (COP) is presented to demonstrate an existing workforce training program that promotes upward mobility of leisure and hospitality employees …
The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini
The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Placing itself in the revival of interest in unequal exchange, Ricci's book claims the need to give the theory a new conceptual foundation to justify recent proposals to estimate unequal exchange on the basis of the so-called Penn effect. In order to do that, Ricci identifies Marx's international law of value as a fitting theoretical framework and hence develops a radically innovative theory of global capitalist exploitation through international trade. Finally, he assesses the magnitude of unequal exchange over the past three decades by producing estimates based on the proposed approach.

A Nov. 2, 2022, symposium sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Yeutter Institute brought together experts addressing a wide array of trade matters, including global ag market dynamics, North American economic integration and Asia-Pacific economic diplomacy. Among the key questions discussed:
— What complications arise for efforts to shift trade policy toward “friendshoring”?
— How well has North American economic integration fared in the wake of NAFTA and its successor, the USMCA?
— What factors, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, are currently affecting agricultural markets and global food insecurity?
— What guideposts can best direct U.S. economic diplomacy …

How An Abusive Supervision Climate Impacts Business-To-Business (B2b) Sales Performance, And The Roles Of Leader–Members Interdependence And Team Psychological Safety, Matthew J. Daniel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sales supervisors can tremendously influence the sales teams they manage, and their behaviors can influence a team’s engagement and sales performance. Because of the supervisor’s influential role, their behavior, positive or negative, can ripple throughout the organization. As a result, a supervisor who role models abusive behavior within their organization also promotes a climate of abuse and incivility that can contribute to a toxic workplace. Abusive supervision (AS) is a significant problem in many business-to-business (B2B) sales organizations that negatively impacts the financial welfare and subjective well-being of organizations and their employees. This quantitative correlational study aimed to examine how …

Debris Of Progress: A Political Ethnography Of Critical Infrastructure, Ethan Tupelo
Debris Of Progress: A Political Ethnography Of Critical Infrastructure, Ethan Tupelo
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I advance a political ethnography of critical infrastructure to better understand terminal capitalism, in which the waste products of commodification and resource depletion are destroying the ecological systems that support life. My object of study is the massive disjuncture between individual knowledge and intention, and these catastrophic collective planetary outcomes. Theoretically, I develop critical infrastructure theory to diagnose these destructive structures. By “infrastructure,” I mean systems of material and discursive flows fundamental to sedentary human organization, connecting local actions with global systems. Such infrastructure is “critical” in three senses: A) denoting the most important forms of infrastructure …

Event-Related Potentials Of Individuals With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Performing The Attention Network Task, P. Dennis Rodriguez, Justin E. Stauffacher
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The current study sought to investigate the neural basis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by examining the performance of individuals with ADHD on the Attentional Networks Test (ANT) by Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, Raz, and Posner (2002), while recording electroencephalography (EEG) utilizing event-related potentials (ERP) methodology. Fifty-seven university students were divided into three groups: control, ADHD-inattentive subtype (ADHD-IA), and ADHD-combined/hyperactive impulsive subtype (ADHD-C/HI). The average peak amplitudes of the P300 waveform for each group were compared and analyzed for performance on each attention network measured by the ANT: the alerting network, the orienting network, and the executive control network. The average P3 …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: October 26, 2022, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The LEI-N rose by 0.34% in September 2022, after a small decline in July and August. The leading indicator is designed to predict economic growth six months in the future. A flat value for the indicator over the last three months signals a stagnant economy in Nebraska at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. Three components of the leading indicator improved during September. There was an increase in hours worked in the manufacturing industry. There was also a decline in initial claims for unemployment insurance and respondents to the September Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to …

Does An Initial Public Offering (Ipo) Issuer's Securities And Exchange Commission Registration Fee Calculation Method Predict Pricing Revisions And Ipo Underpricing?, Patrick Corrigan
Journal Articles
This paper proposes a new proxy for the ex ante expectations of issuers and their underwriters about the direction of pricing revisions during the roadshows of an initial public offering (IPO): the way issuers elect to calculate the registration fees owed to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Consistent with fee-minimizing decision-making, I find that the choice of fee calculation method is associated with pricing revisions and IPO underpricing. This relationship suggests that issuers or their advisors may not incorporate economically significant private valuation information into the initial pricing range estimate and initial public offering price. The results provide empirical support …
