The Failings Of Ninth Grade: Causes, Effects And Solutions At A Traditional And Alternative High School, Alexis Hince Aug 2014

The Failings Of Ninth Grade: Causes, Effects And Solutions At A Traditional And Alternative High School, Alexis Hince

EMPA Capstones

Ninth grade, a pivotal transition year, identified as the grade with the highest failure rate than any other grade, directly affects high school graduation, dropout, and repetition rates. Administrators and teachers recognize the crisis that is occurring within the ninth grade but have been unable to address the myriad of variables that cause the failures. Some schools have found success by restructuring ninth grade into a small school academy, isolating the students from the main population in order to create a more nurturing environment. Other schools have utilized team teaching, where a group of teachers shares the same group of …

Multinational Enterprise Parent-Foreign Subsidiary Governance, Bassam Elias Farah Aug 2014

Multinational Enterprise Parent-Foreign Subsidiary Governance, Bassam Elias Farah

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation investigates how a multinational enterprise’s (MNE) corporate headquarters governs its foreign subsidiaries. It draws on agency theory, prospect theory, and corporate governance literatures to develop a framework that describes select MNE parent-foreign subsidiary governance mechanisms expected to predict foreign subsidiary performance, measured as foreign subsidiary survival and profitability.

To test this framework, I first conducted a pilot Canadian study. It was followed by the main multi-country study. The Canadian study used mixed methods. It analyzed quantitative data, compiled from different sources, and qualitative data, collected through personal interviews with subsidiary managers. The main multi-country study used survival analysis …

Three Essays On Consumer Product Returns, Guangzhi Shang Aug 2014

Three Essays On Consumer Product Returns, Guangzhi Shang

Theses and Dissertations

Return policies (aka. money-back-guarantee policies) are frequently offered by retailers such that consumers can bring back the purchased products that do not fit their needs. On the benefit side, consumers perceive these policies as a risk-mitigation service and are willing to pay more for an otherwise identical product. All else being equal, being lenient in its return policy should allow a retailer to enjoy higher sales, which leads to increased revenue. On the cost side, a generous return policy will induce more returns and possibly also late returns. In 2007 alone, U.S. manufacturers and retailers paid more than $100 billion …

Two Essays On Time Perceptions And Patience, Frank May Aug 2014

Two Essays On Time Perceptions And Patience, Frank May

Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines how the properties inherent to time can affect perception of wait time and, consequently, patience. Patience, or the willingness to forgo a smaller reward in the present in order to obtain a larger reward in the future, is an important construct in the consumer behavior literature. I focus on how consumers perceive wait time when faced with an intertemporal choice between a smaller-sooner option and a larger-later one (e.g., receive less money earlier vs. more money later). In this type of situation, wait time is standing between the individual and a better option. I argue that the …

Hospital Competitive Strategies And Performance Outcomes, Wei Wu Aug 2014

Hospital Competitive Strategies And Performance Outcomes, Wei Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

Hospitals are under increasing pressure to improve performance and healthcare outcomes. The existing literature does not point to a clear conclusion on whether competition can help address the performance challenges of hospitals which lead to improvements in clinical outcomes. Prior research on the effects of hospital competitive strategies usually focuses on one strategy or one type of outcome at a time. As such, there is a dearth of systematical studies on different hospital competitive strategies and their consequent performance outcomes.

The main objective of this dissertation is to examine several hospital competitive strategies and quantitatively validate the implications of each …

Syringe Exchange In Monterey County: A Study Of Syringe Disposal Practices Of Intravenous Drug Users In Monterey County, Jaime Teeter Householder

EMPA Capstones

Central Coast HIV & AIDS Services (CCHAS) is a nonprofit organization that currently administers the only syringe exchange program in Monterey County as a part of its HIV prevention program. State and local public funding for HIV prevention purposes has been drastically reduced, and CCHAS may no longer be able to fund the syringe exchange program. The use of syringe exchange programs is endorsed by many national and international organizations as effective strategies for preventing the transmission of HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among intravenous drug users (IDUs) and to encourage proper syringe disposal by …

Roles And Functions Of Organizational Ombuds Officers In The United States, Dana M. Bennett Aug 2014

Roles And Functions Of Organizational Ombuds Officers In The United States, Dana M. Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizational ombuds officers have worked in corporate America for nearly fifty years. This was an exploratory study of ombuds officers in the United States that utilized direct interviews to gather data from seven ombuds officers in large organizations. A qualitative approach compared roles of these ombuds officers to roles of other ombuds officers working in the United States. Roles examined included: investigatory, advocacy, assisting, and regulatory roles. The results demonstrated that a majority of ombuds officers worked in an assisting role. Ombuds officers may provide better information to organizations if they employ a four frame structure to track issues brought …

A Process Framework For Managing Quality Of Service In Private Cloud, Arvind Maskara

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As information systems leaders tap into the global market of cloud computing-based services, they struggle to maintain consistent application performance due to lack of a process framework for managing quality of service (QoS) in the cloud. Guided by the disruptive innovation theory, the purpose of this case study was to identify a process framework for meeting the QoS requirements of private cloud service users. Private cloud implementation was explored by selecting an organization in California through purposeful sampling. Information was gathered by interviewing 23 information technology (IT) professionals, a mix of frontline engineers, managers, and leaders involved in the implementation …

How Microlending Affects Innovation And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From Ethiopia, Robert Hirth Aug 2014

How Microlending Affects Innovation And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From Ethiopia, Robert Hirth

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advocates of microlending suggest it is a sustainable intervention that reaches the poor directly and offers them the means to invest and improve their incomes (Khavul, 2010; Morduch, 1999; Yunus, 2007); yet, impact studies of these interventions have suggested they often have little or even a detrimental impact on borrowers (Van Rooyen, Stewart & De Wet, 2012). This dissertation examines the efforts to promote entrepreneurship and alleviate poverty in developing countries through microlending. I begin by reviewing the microlending literature, and in particular, impact studies of the effect microlending is having in developing countries. Next, I review theory and empirical …

Explaining The Effects Of Pay Variation On Individual Outcomes, Samantha A. Conroy Aug 2014

Explaining The Effects Of Pay Variation On Individual Outcomes, Samantha A. Conroy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Compensation is an area of research rife with debate among experts. These debates are primarily concerned with the effectiveness of pay-for-performance. The pay variation and performance relationship is a subset of this research where disagreement and inconclusive findings are common. Is pay variation conducive to higher performance or is pay compression ideal? This study contributes to the pay variation and performance debate by focusing on performance-based pay variation and addressing fundamental assumptions of prior work. Past research has treated pay variation as a proxy for allocation rules and incentive intensity. Separating these two constructs rather than confounding them provides a …

Buyer Beware : Consumer Response To Manipulations Of Online Product Reviews, Mengzhou Zhuang

Theses & Dissertations

Online product reviews have become an important and influential source of information for consumers. Firms often manipulate online product reviews to influence consumer perceptions about the product, making it a research topic of urgent need for theory development and empirical investigation. In this thesis, we examine how consumers perceive and respond to the three commonly used manipulation tactics. Firstly, an exploratory pre-study via in-depth interviews with online shoppers indicates that consumers commonly have the knowledge for online review manipulations as well as for detecting them. In the first study, a survey was used to investigate the three popular manipulation tactics …

Assessing Children's Programs In Country Clubs: A Case Of A Midwest Country Club In The United States, Xiaoying Song

Open Access Theses

Memberships in private clubs have been declining over the past several years due principally to economic downturns, the overbuilding of golf courses, and aging members. Several suggestions have been implemented to solve the problem, but without any positive effect. Recent studies have indicated that emphasizing family and developing children's programs could be the answer. However, issues related to children's programs in this setting have received limited research attention. This study develops an evaluation process to measure the performance of children's programs in country club settings. A mixed-method case study approach was used to collect and analyze data from a Midwest …

The Use Of Business Intelligence Techniques In Supply Chain Performance, Jue Gu Jul 2014

The Use Of Business Intelligence Techniques In Supply Chain Performance, Jue Gu

Open Access Theses

Who likes data? Businesses are always loyal data followers. Companies analyze various forms of data to maintain businesses and identify their current performance in different areas so they can find business opportunities to improve and obtain more market share in advance (Qrunfleh & Tarafdar, 2012). When Big Data comes to businesses, companies who can take advantage of data the best tend to regularly get more business and customers (Waller & Fawcett, 2013). Collecting, analyzing, and demonstrating data could be essential to a single business, a company's supply chain performance and its sustainability. As an intelligent data processing product in terms …

The Effect Of Loyalty Program Attributes On Customer’S Booking Choice, Sung Jun Joe

Open Access Theses

A loyalty program is commonly observed in our real world to establish and maintain a customer relationship. However, there is limited research information on the effect of loyalty program schemes on customers' choice in an online booking context. The current study summarized the awards currently offered by major hotels and online travel agencies (OTAs) and examined: 1) customers' preference toward attributes of the loyalty program, 2) within reward attributes, which contributes to an increase in consumers' booking choice, 3) which attributes make customers book on hotel websites rather than on OTA websites, and 4) the interaction between customer involvement and …

Decreasing Recidivism By Creating New Choices: Monterey County's Adult Criminal Mental Health Court, Amanda L. Briseño, Ma, Mft

EMPA Capstones

It is estimated that 16% of adults in state prisons, and 17% in jails have a serious mental illness (Council of State Governments, 2012, p. 6). Considering severely mentally ill inmates have an 80% chance of returning ("Incarcerated Mentally Ill", n.d.), some communities have chosen to find a way to reduce that rate of recidivism. In Monterey County, that way may be the adult criminal mental health court, Creating New Choices (CNC). A review of relevant literature has identified courts of its kind as effective in doing so, and in order to determine if CNC does reduce recidivism rates key …

Three Essays On The Enterprise Strategy For Multinational Firms, Veselina Plamenova Vracheva Jul 2014

Three Essays On The Enterprise Strategy For Multinational Firms, Veselina Plamenova Vracheva

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The enterprise strategy (ES) of the firm is the overarching organizational strategy which reflects the firm's degree of integration with society. It asks, "What do we stand for?" Very little is known about the ES; however, it is an important construct which can deepen our understanding of the stakeholder management process and the firm's long-term performance. Unlike much previous ES research, this three-essay dissertation examines both the nature of and the antecedents for ES in a cross-national setting.

The introductory essay offers a conceptual model describing the organizational identity orientation effects on the multinational enterprise's (MNE) ES. Additionally, it shows …

The Antecedents And Effects Of Strategic Caring: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Thomas Weber Jul 2014

The Antecedents And Effects Of Strategic Caring: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Thomas Weber

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study develops a new construct, strategic caring, defined as actions taken by top managers within stakeholder relationships to improve the well-being of both the stakeholders and the firm. This construct is based on a review of the multidisciplinary caring literature from which a definition of individual caring was developed through content analysis, and then subjected to conceptual inferences to the organizational level of analysis. Strategic caring focuses on a broad set of firm stakeholders, and this stakeholder orientation suggests that a firm can take actions to improve the well-being of these many stakeholder groups and perform as well as, …

Employee Voice And Recipients' Appraisals/Reactions: The Effects Of Speech Style, Voice Type, And Voicer Status, Yongsuhk Jung Jun 2014

Employee Voice And Recipients' Appraisals/Reactions: The Effects Of Speech Style, Voice Type, And Voicer Status, Yongsuhk Jung

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this research was to investigate the consequences of employee voice (i.e., the expression of information, ideas, or concerns for organizational development), primarily focusing on voice assertiveness (i.e., the extent of voicing individuals’ assertive expressions) and its influences on perceptual appraisals and reactions of voice recipients. Based on a literature review, I proposed a process model that described the influential mechanisms of voice assertiveness. I also defined moderating conditions that may guide the nature of the influence processes, such as voice type (promotive voice vs. prohibitive voice), voicer status (subordinate vs. peer), and recipient core self-evaluations. From two …

Green Index: Integration Of Environmental Performance, Green Innovativeness And Financial Performance, Ilknur Mary Joy Nirmala Tekin Jun 2014

Green Index: Integration Of Environmental Performance, Green Innovativeness And Financial Performance, Ilknur Mary Joy Nirmala Tekin

Dissertations and Theses

The integration of sustainability performance of companies is becoming increasingly important. The recent global requirements (i.e. the Kyoto Protocol) for significant reduction of the negative impact of companies on the environment over the next 6 years have been putting pressure on the companies, requiring them to lower the negative environmental impact of market performance. This requirement challenges the profitable growth of the companies' business functions, given the change needed for business operations to improve on their environmental impact.

In this dissertation a new corporate sustainability performance index, called: The Green Index, for measuring and assessing the integrated sustainability performance of …

The Rhetoric Of Corporate Identity: Corporate Social Responsibility, Creating Shared Value, And Globalization, Carolyn Day Jun 2014

The Rhetoric Of Corporate Identity: Corporate Social Responsibility, Creating Shared Value, And Globalization, Carolyn Day

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In today's global political and media climate, the stakes are high for corporations, local or otherwise, to create and maintain an `ethical' perception of not only their daily business activities and how they can benefit society or protect the environment, but also their enduring characteristics or `corporate identity' (Conrad, 2011) for numerous, sometimes conflicting stakeholder audiences (Cheney, 1983). This dissertation examines how such forms of `socially responsible' corporate identities are created and maintained through the use of persuasive language. In particular it examines the role and implications of rhetoric within the contexts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as well as …

Essays On Corporate Finance, Hari Prasad Adhikari Jun 2014

Essays On Corporate Finance, Hari Prasad Adhikari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We compare acquisition activity, method of payment choice, and the long-run value implications of acquisitions by newly public single-class and dual-class US companies. Our results show that dual-class IPO firms make relatively more acquisitions in innovative industries and are less likely to pay with stock as compared to single-class IPO firms. We provide evidence that the reluctance of dual-class firms to pay with stock is not related to the insiders' cash-flow rights but it is significantly positively related to the insiders' voting rights and wedge between the insiders' voting rights and cash-flow rights. We also find that acquiring dual-class IPOs …

Patient Safety Culture And High Reliability Organizations, Jared D. Padgett Jun 2014

Patient Safety Culture And High Reliability Organizations, Jared D. Padgett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A 1999 evaluation of case studies performed by staff from the Institute of Medicine found that between 40,000 and 98,000 patients died from preventable errors, while 43,598 individuals died in car accidents that year. A 2011 report increased that estimate nearly 10 times. Widespread preventable patient harm still occurs despite an increase in healthcare regulations. High-reliability organization theory has contributed to improved safety and may potentially reverse this trend. This explorative single case study explored how the perceptions and experiences of nursing and respiratory staff affected the successful transition of a healthcare organization into a reliability-seeking organization. Fourteen participants from …

Electronic Student-Form Management System, Donia I. Alsayed Jun 2014

Electronic Student-Form Management System, Donia I. Alsayed

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The development of technology has made the world a smaller place where communicating instantaneously irrespective of the geographical location is a way of life. Electronic Forms (E-FORMS) are an easy way to communicate efficiently with students. At present, universities are still using old systems for communication where efforts to improve the system is a lethargic process. As most of these universities are still using student forms manually, the introduction of E-FORMS will speed up the whole process and positively impact in communicating efficiency. In addition, the inconvenience of making numerous visits to the university is sometimes seen as a hassle …

Functional Space Management In The Hospitality Industry And Its Future Outlook, Katherine Dail May 2014

Functional Space Management In The Hospitality Industry And Its Future Outlook, Katherine Dail

Senior Theses

In recent years, profit made from ancillary revenues has become more vital to the success of service companies. This phenomenon is very pronounced in the airline industry, but is also beginning to become more relevant to hotels as it is applied to functional space and meetings. Most of these ancillary revenues, including meetings, are typically not considered an important source of revenue for hotels, but rather as tools to draw in primary activities. This thesis seeks to delve into the importance of the meetings industry to the economy and to the hospitality industry by considering underutilized functional space and customer …
