How do managers respond when confronted with the demands of activist stakeholders over whom they exercise no direct control? What strategies do managers adopt, and why? Which of these are most effective—and under what conditions? Increasingly, businesses today face difficult challenges in response to changing public expectations and newly emergent techniques of stakeholder influence. New communications technologies enable activists concerned about business behavior to mobilize supporters around the world in real time. Many firms conduct their work on a global stage, where damage to reputation in one location can quickly reverberate around the world. This article develops a typology of …

An Operational Framework For Mortgage Supply Chains, Juri Hirschey, Patricia Wescott, Nezih Altay

Operations management in the mortgage banking industry requires a strategic framework that takes into account the industry’s volatility, operational complexity and unique customer model. The foundation of this framework begins by (re)defining the mortgage lender’s customer to include the capital markets. This paper proposes a novel model for managing mortgage banking operations, a model that uniquely reveals two different but intricately related supply chains in mortgage operations. The proposed dual-direction supply chain model offers speed and flexibility with one supply chain and integration and market knowledge with the other – the combination of which is critical to developing an effective …

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison
A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). The BCA HRC was created as a result of the access discrimination that has historically taken place in college sport (Brooks & Althouse, 2000; Cunningham & Sagas, 2005), which has consequently contributed to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in the head coach position in college football. The HRC …
Impact Of Disasters On Firms In Different Sectors: Implications For Supply Chains, Nezih Altay, Andres Ramirez
Impact Of Disasters On Firms In Different Sectors: Implications For Supply Chains, Nezih Altay, Andres Ramirez
Nezih Altay
Disasters keep damaging infrastructure, disrupting supply chains and affecting firm profitability. There is an urgent need for better understanding of disaster impact on supply chains but very few publications address this issue. This exploratory study takes an indirect approach and investigates disaster impact on firms in various industry sectors. This approach allows us to take full advantage of large secondary data bases of firm and disaster data in order to analyze the impact of over 3,500 disasters on more than 100,000 firm-year observations over 15 years. Our results indicate that disasters impact all sectors within a supply chain. We found …

Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley
Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley
Scott Kelley
Global poverty has received significant attention in the past decade, particularly after the adoption of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals in 2002. Commentators and ethicists like Peter Singer have long held that the wealthy of the world have an obligation to help the poor. While the sentiments may be positive, there are real harms that have come from this kind of top down thinking. Subsidiarity, to the contrary, is a much more realistic and morally tenable approach to global poverty.

Patrick Albert Palmieri
GOAL. To analyze the theoretical underpinnings of safety culture and to provide an assessment about the state of safety culture research in healthcare. METHODS. First, we reviewed the concept of safety culture, including its origination, disciplinary influences, and associated theoretical tenets. By describing the literature and discussing the interchangeable use of the terms “safety attitude,” “safety climate,” and “safety culture,” we are able to present the conceptual attributes associated with safety culture and present a definition of safety culture. Then, we discuss the psychometric properties for the most widely used instruments in healthcare. The article concludes with a discussion of …

Safety Culture As A Contemporary Healthcare Construct: Theoretical Review, Research Assessment, And Translation To Human Resource Management., Patrick Albert Palmieri
Patrick Albert Palmieri
Through a number of comprehensive reviews, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended that healthcare organizations develop safety cultures in order to align delivery system processes with the workforce requirements to improve patient outcomes. Until health systems can provide safer care environments, patients remain at risk for suboptimal care and adverse outcomes. Health science researchers have begun to explore how safety cultures might act as an essential system feature to improve organizational outcomes. Since safety cultures are established via modification in employee safety perspective and work behavior, human resource professionals need to contribute to this developing organizational domain. The IOM …

An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Mixed Methods In Doctor Of Business Administration (Dba) Curriculum Within An Australian University, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller
Peter Miller
Business disciplines have traditionally been undertaken within the quantitative paradigm however, mixed methods approaches have recently been introduced and utilised within applied business research. The purpose of this paper is to map the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed research methods in an international Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) curriculum within an Australian University. This paper begins with a professional reflective piece on the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed methods. This is followed by a brief overview of the literature on mixed methods as a third methodological movement. The paper will then present empirical data into the …
