“Boadicea Onstage Before 1800, A Theatrical And Colonial History.” Studies In English Literature 1500-1900 49.3 (Summer 2009): 595-614., Wendy Nielsen
Wendy Nielsen
This essay examines the theatrical legacy of Boadicea, the British warrior queen defeated by the Romans around 61 AD, in three plays: John Fletcher's "The Tragedy of Bonduca, or the British Heroine" and two unrelated dramas titled "Boadicea" by Charles Hopkins and Richard Glover. Performance histories attempt to explain why audiences respond to Boadicea with ambivalence. Each production underplays the defeated queen and gives starring roles to one or more of her daughters and a male lead, who contrast with Boadicea's supposed brutality and provide British audiences with lessons about ways to rule in an ostensibly civilized fashion.
Exploding Bombs: Masculinity And War Trauma In Sam Shepard’S Drama, Katherine Weiss
Exploding Bombs: Masculinity And War Trauma In Sam Shepard’S Drama, Katherine Weiss
Katherine Weiss
This paper examines violence and masculinity in Sam Shepard's work as a symptom of war trauma, apparent in his characterization of several of his male characters as war veterans and the violent language accompanying his other characters. War becomes a cultural disease infesting and destroying the family on Shepard's stage.

Intended For The Stage?: Samson Agonistes In Performance, Timothy Burbery
Intended For The Stage?: Samson Agonistes In Performance, Timothy Burbery
Timothy J. Burbery
The year 2000 marked the centenary of an important but overlooked milestone in Milton studies, namely the first staging of Samson Agonistes, by William Poel, in 1900. While many scholars may be aware of isolated productions of the tragedy, the extent and variety of its stage history is perhaps less well-known. The work was successful as a dramatic reading throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, yet it had never been attempted on the boards until Poel’s landmark production. That event ushered in a range of performances throughout the twentieth century, and nearly every decade saw several dramatizations. At least fifteen …

Witchcraft And Wonder In The Winter's Tale, Kirby Farrell
kirby farrell
The Winter’s Tale is constructed to generate an experience of wonder as Hermione’s statue comes to life. Audiences are meant to share what Leontes calls “The pleasure of that madness” (5.3.73). This revelatory madness is magical undoing: it dissolves the paranoid paroxysm at the outset of the play that crystallizes ideas about witchcraft, even as Hermione's play death and "resurrection" purge her of associations with witches.

Deliver Us From Evil: Essays On Symbolic Engagement In Early Drama, Clifford Davidson
Deliver Us From Evil: Essays On Symbolic Engagement In Early Drama, Clifford Davidson
Clifford Davidson
The focus of this book is on the reality of evil for medieval and Renaissance dramatists and their audiences. What propels the work beyond similar critiques is the author's insistence that evil is not an outmoded feature of past societies, but an active ingredient of contemporary life. Davidson fast forwards from distant times once described as "calamitous" to a century of far more violence and atrocity - our own twentieth and its overflow. While drawing on Kant to illuminate the kinds of evil portrayed in early drama through Marlowe and Shakespeare, Davidson refers to contemporary events that scream for an …
