Creative dance/movement pedagogy in an English language learning classroom can help nurture self-identity and build cognition. English language teaching through volunteer tourism is growing along with the expectation for English acquisition. Since English teachers abroad are most often not required to have teacher training, this can lead to teacher-centered classrooms, passive learning for students, and a lack of use of creative processes. Research indicates that creative dance/movement pedagogy and concepts as teaching methodology can aid English acquisition and build self-identity. Dance relies on physical ideas born out of human experience. Changes in what we “do” and “transmit” in the context of pedagogy should follow the shifting and informed perspectives of the time, reflecting scientific, sociological, and imaginative advancements and practices. One day, while a young girl skipped down a university pathway, that principle was brought into question. This innocent protagonist’s skipping provoked a search for explanations of the erasure of a complex “foundational” action from the grounds of adult knowledgeable behaviour. Examining The Affects Of Four Mental Images On Student Dancers' Jumping Height, Teresa Heiland

A quasi-experimental design was used to assess effects of Franklin Method images on dancers’ jump height. Thirteen dancers applied four image interventions while performing first position jumps for vertical height analysis. Mean heights and within-trial jump degradation and variability were examined. A repeated-measures mixed model analysis with covariates was used to assess whether jump heights differed significantly from baseline. Two of the four images showed significant increases in jump height above baseline. A linear time effect was also found over the course of the study. Anecdotal self-reports revealed that there appeared to be no correlation between jump height and imagery …
