From Locus Amoenus To Locus Horribilis: Provincial And Urban Spaces Of Cultural (Re)Assertion And Hegemony In Yates And Sigel’S When The Mountains Tremble And Bustamante’S Ixcanul, Katrina Abad

Views from Below: The Underdog in Contemporary Latin American and Spanish Film

The trope of locus amoenus, or the idyllic representation of heaven on earth, and its counterpart locus horribilis, or the mundane incarnation of hell, was first critically defined by Ernst Robert Curtius in 1953 and identified in religiously influenced literature as early as Latin and medieval European works. Since then, the locus theory has appeared in numerous secular texts and films, such as Marcelo Ferrari’s Sub Terra (2004), as a means of distinguishing the once-pristine ‘purity’ of provincial spaces from the physically and metaphorically cramped mines and buildings produced by an urbanized modernity. This essay seeks to translate …

Students will develop a website using the platform Scalar, which will enable them to "assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways" (according to Scalar's website). This project, to be introduced at the end of the semester and in juxtaposition to the overall course organization which follows a chronological model, will allow students to attain a perspective on the material they have been studying in a radically new way while at the same time giving them access to a tool which will allow them to bring the various fields of …

Posthumanism, Animism, And Sérgio Medeiros’S Pluriverse Poetics, Malcolm Mcnee Oct 2017

Posthumanism, Animism, And Sérgio Medeiros’S Pluriverse Poetics, Malcolm Mcnee

Spanish and Portuguese: Faculty Publications

The works of Sérgio Medeiros are populated by a multitude of beings of diverse and often shifting orders and species. Drawing upon intersecting conceptual orientations of animal and multispecies studies, posthumanism, and ecocriticism, I survey a range of interspecies encounters and worldings in Medeiros’s writing, especially his collection of poems, O choro da aranha, etc.(2013). As Medeiros pointedly draws inspiration from diverse aesthetic and philosophical traditions—from Amerindian cosmogonies and verbal arts to Japanese Zen poetry and various strains of modernist avantgardism—I trace here as a unifying feature his engagement with animist imaginings and a post- or anti-anthropocentric unsettling of …

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

This First Year Seminar is an introduction to the writings of Latino/as in the U.S. with emphasis on the distinctions and similarities that have shaped the experiences and the cultural imagination among different Latinx communities. We will focus particularly in works produced by the three major groups of U.S. Latinx (Mexican Americans or Chicanos, Puerto Ricans or Nuyoricans, and Cuban Americans) during the 20th and 21st centuries but will also include (mostly toward the end of the course) some pieces representative of other Latinx identities. By critically analyzing works from a range of genres and cultural expressions including poetry, fiction, …

“Those Who Don’T Remember Don’T Exist Anywhere:” Historical Redemption In Patricio Guzmán’S Nostalgia For The Light (2010), Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera Sep 2017

“Those Who Don’T Remember Don’T Exist Anywhere:” Historical Redemption In Patricio Guzmán’S Nostalgia For The Light (2010), Cristina Ruiz-Poveda Vera

Journal of Religion & Film

The poetic aesthetic of Patricio Guzman’s documentary Nostalgia for the Light (2010) ponders the nature of memory and history. The film uses a metaphysical approach to explore the traumatic past of Chile, creating a sense of historical redemption as defined by Walter Benjamin (1940). Contemporary Latin American documentaries have abandoned the idea of objectivity to focus on subjective portrayals of memory as a way to capture the plurality of personal experiences of historical events. As a result, these documentaries have become more artistic and formally innovative than the previous epic informative films of the region. In the case of Guzman’s …

La Nación Está En Otra Parte: Cultura Y Neoliberalismo En México (1977-1996), Rafael Lemus Sep 2017

La Nación Está En Otra Parte: Cultura Y Neoliberalismo En México (1977-1996), Rafael Lemus

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies a series of cultural products and practices that, between 1977 and 1996, either contributed to the formation and propagation of a neoliberal rationality in Mexico or opposed it. By analyzing objects as diverse as cultural magazines, art exhibitions, literary polemics and social movements, it addresses the reconfiguration of the Mexican cultural field triggered by the neoliberal turn in the 1980s as well as the construction of a new national narrative intended to displace the old revolutionary tale and to rationalize and facilitate the insertion of the country into the global economy.

The first chapter focuses on the …

Against Representation: A Note On Jorge Luis Borges’ Aleph, Ilan Stavans Sep 2017

Against Representation: A Note On Jorge Luis Borges’ Aleph, Ilan Stavans

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Faced with the need to represent Jorge Luis Borges’s classic tale “The Aleph,” which also gives name to his 1949 collection of stories, for decades publishers have resorted to a variety of dependable images, including works by Borges’s friend Xul Solar. Yet the argument of the tale is that no human language, either verbal or visual, is capable of summing up the fullness of the object Borges’s narrator discovers in a dark Buenos Aires basement. That object—the universe itself—is unrepresentable.

El Universo Posthumano De "Lágrimas En La Lluvia": Memoria Artificial, Identidad, Historia Y Ficción, Juan C. Martin Galvan

Alambique.

Neoliberalism In The Gutter: Latin American Comics And Society Since The 1990s, Mauricio Espinoza Sep 2017

Neoliberalism In The Gutter: Latin American Comics And Society Since The 1990s, Mauricio Espinoza

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Since the 1990s, Latin America has undergone important economic, social, political, and cultural transformations marked by the consolidation of neoliberal policies that swept through the region and helped define its contemporary societies. This essay explores comic books and cartoons produced by Latin American artists during this period, interrogating the various ways in which the graphic narrative medium has both reflected and reacted against neoliberalism’s impact throughout the continent. Through the use of political cartooning, superhero comics, and graphic novels that employ supernatural themes, the artists analyzed here have engaged with the big, contentious issues of contemporary Latin America, including foreign …

On the Road to Nowhere:

A Reading of Franz Galich’s Managua, Salsa City (¡Devórame otra vez!)

This article examines how Franz Galich, in Managua, Salsa City (¡Devórame otra vez!), narrates the Central American neoliberal experience from the perspective of the underprivileged. I explore how, beginning with the title, the author positions his protagonists in the neoliberal, fragmented moment. From there, Galich proceeds to document a night in the life of the marginalized. Here, Beatriz Cortez’s concept of cinismo is used to understand how the role-playing, that is central to the novel, brings into question arbitrary social barriers. In so …

La Emigración A Norteamérica, La Peregrinación Y La Hospitalidad, Charli Tyree

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
