Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky Oct 2007

Phonological Facilitation Through Translation In A Bilingual Picture-Naming Task, Paul Amrhein, Aimee Knupsky

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a critical examination of phonological effects in a picture-word interference task. Using a methodology minimizing stimulus repetition, English/Spanish and Spanish/English bilinguals named pictures in either L1 or L2 (blocked contexts) or in both (mixed contexts) while ignoring word distractors in L1 or L2. Distractors were either phonologically related to the picture name (direct; FISH–fist), or related through translation to the picture name (TT; LEG–milk–leche), or they were unrelated (bear–peach). Results demonstrate robust activation of phonological representations by translation equivalents of word distractors. Although both direct and TT distractors facilitated naming, TT facilitation was more consistent in L2 naming …

Information Gap Activities: A Standards-Based Strategy For Promoting Oral Proficiency In A Thematic Context, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This article demonstrates how the sustained use of standards-driven information gap activities (IGAs) supports and enhances the development of speaking skills. In the first section, we define the IGA. We then discuss recent research showing how IGAs promote focused student-student interactions. In the third section we provide a blueprint for implementing the IGA in a standards-based thematic context. We conclude with content-based models from a thematic unit on Argentina that are appropriate for both secondary and post-secondary classrooms.

El Silencio Del Hambre: Figuras De La Carencia En Antonio José Ponte, Isabel Alvarez-Borland Sep 2007

El Silencio Del Hambre: Figuras De La Carencia En Antonio José Ponte, Isabel Alvarez-Borland

World Languages and Cultures

This essay presents a historical review of the poetic production in Venezuela in the 30's and 40's. It reviews the role that "Viernes," a poetic group, had in developing the modern literary movements in Venezuelan literature. The impact that several members of the group had while in and then later after their departure from the group is examined. Equally, the poetic influences inherited by the group, both national and international, are discussed. Finally, the essay deals with the dissolution of the group and its impact in the literature of Venezuela and Latin America after World War II.

Women's relationships to the state, to their societies, and to the construction of national discourses continue to provide topics for at-times-heated debates. On the one hand, generalizing about women in such a way as to claim that all women have a particular type of connection to political or social phenomena runs the risk of subsuming certain categories of difference—racial, ethnic, class, sexual—at the same time that it attempts to highlight gender difference. On the other hand, refusing to make any kind of statement about the issues faced by groups of women as they negotiate their relationships with the political movements, …

Review Of: España Y Su Civilización, Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

With this textbook, Michael Ugarte and Kathleen McNerney offer a new and revised fifth edition of the late Francisco Ugarte's well-known and much-used Espa?a y su civilizaci?n, first published in 1952. In keeping with the elder Ugarte's original goal of presenting an overview of "the fundamental aspects of Spain's culture" (xi), the younger Ugarte and McNerney also employ "a historical perspective to explore the great developments in fine arts: literature, visual arts, music" (xi). That is, like the original and other previous versions, this new edition combines Spanish history and important aspects of so-called "large-C" culture in a format accessible …
