Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Success In The Intermediate Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez Dec 2006

Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Success In The Intermediate Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This study investigates the ability of three variables—integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, and the need to fulfill a university foreign language requirement—to predict: (1) scores on a simulated oral proficiency interview (SOPI) and (2) the desire to enroll in a foreign language after fulfilling the language requirement. Analysis of data from a questionnaire and a SOPI administered to 130 students completing their fourth‐semester Spanish course identified integrative motivation as a significant predictor of both SOPI scores and students' desire to continue studying Spanish beyond the four‐semester foreign language requirement. A negative relationship was also found between the need to fulfill the …

Carmen De Burgos : La Educación De La Mujer Y La Literatura De Viajes Como Género Narrativo, Esther A. Daganzo-Cantens

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes Carmen de Burgos’ European travel literature, and focuses on two themes: education and travel literature as a literary genre. An examination of her travel literature reveals two essential elements related to her view of education. The first is the influence that the European educational system had on her way of thinking, particularly with respect to the idea of tolerance, the practice of hygiene, and the important role of nature in education. The second is the development of her view of education as the foundation for the emancipation of women in Spain. Carmen de Burgos espoused the view …

Maria Teresa Leon's poetic depiction of the anguish of exile has earned her recognition as a vibrant voice of twentieth century Spanish literature. She was a writer at the forefront of political and intellectual activity during her beloved Spain's civil war (1936-1939). Compelled by the struggle for justice, she portrayed the suffering of the oppressed and disempowered, specifically women, children and workers.

Review Of: Galdos Beyond Realism: Reading And The Creation Of Magical Worlds, Joan M. Hoffman May 2006

Review Of: Galdos Beyond Realism: Reading And The Creation Of Magical Worlds, Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

Timothy McGovern's latest offering, Galdós Beyond Realism: Reading and the Creation of Magical Worlds, may prove surprising, if not a bit unsettling, for the die-hard, skeptical fan of Spanish High Realism who can not imagine the words "Galdós" and "magical worlds" in the same sentence. Nonetheless, McGovern presents a fascinating examination of what he terms Don Benito's "magical fictions" (7). He jostles us out of our comfort zone, examining "post-realist, non-realist, or magical" Galdosian works that push the limits of traditional realism through the employment of metafictional and magical frames, supernatural interventions, and a very conscious lack of verisimilitude (29). …

Mariano Jose de Lana was one of Spain's finest journalist of the early nineteenth century. I teach a entire half semester on Lana in a course on reform in Spain. Today's students are still interested in the subject of reform and they do, predictably, compare Larra 's recommendations with what they see on their own trips to Spain as well as with similar issues in 21st century United States culture. As a framework for the course, four basic approaches were designed, which were also the topics for a take--home, mid-term exam.

In La Perfecta Casada ( 1.583) Fray Luis de Leon exhorted wives to redeem their fallen husbands through their exemplary behavior. While he does not directly address the problem of spousal abuse, he does suggest that even infidelity must be endured as part of the perfect wife's duty to exert her good, Christian influence on her husband.
