Variation In Spanish/S: Overview And New Perspectives, Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The natural tendency for language variation, intensified by Spanish’s territorial growth, has driven sibilant changes and mergers across the Spanish-speaking world. This article aims to present an overview of the most significant processes undergone by sibilant /s/ in various Spanish-speaking areas: devoicing, weakening, aspiration, elision, and voicing. Geographically based phonetic variations, sociolinguistic factors, and Spanish language contact situations are considered in this study. The sibilant merger and its chronological development in modern Spanish, along with geographic expansion, have resulted in multiple contemporary dialectal variations. This historical lack of stability in these sounds has marked modern regional variations. Tracing and framing …

Based on Lucrecia de León’s oneiric records, this study focuses on a series of Arabisms in the Inquisition manuscripts of her persecution and imprisonment. The written documents of this young woman’s dreams, collected and conserved by scribes and inquisitors at the end of the sixteenth century, comprises 415 narrative fragments, dated between 1587 and 1590. The main goal of this article is to analyze three Arabisms, alcabala, ataifor, and búcaro, as examples of the Arabic influence on the Castillian vocabulary of the time. Besides the sociolinguistic analysis of these three words, we present this woman as representative of her gender …

El Arte Sinestético En La Obra De Isabel Coixet, Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Power Of Languages: Linguistic Discourse On Migration And Cultural Diversity, Eva Núñez-Méndez Jan 2017

The Power Of Languages: Linguistic Discourse On Migration And Cultural Diversity, Eva Núñez-Méndez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish. Part Ii., Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is a continuation of Part I, published in the previous volume of Estudios Hispanicos.

The evolution of the medieval sibilant phonetic system is crucial to understanding the origin of Castilian varieties on both sides of the Atlantic. It helps to distinguish varieties such as Andalusian Spanish, Judeo- Spanish, and trans-Atlantic Spanish, which constitute proof of many of the diachronic processes happening during and after the late medieval period. This study helps the reader understand the linguistic variations of the sibilants in the modem language, and explores the origins and different steps in their evolution; furthermore, it evaluates recent …

José María Arguedas, Etnógrafo: Campo Cultural Y Mestizaje, Enrique E. Cortez Jul 2016

José María Arguedas, Etnógrafo: Campo Cultural Y Mestizaje, Enrique E. Cortez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish (Part I), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The evolution of the medieval sibilant phonetic system is indispensable in understanding how original Castilian expanded and evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, it helps to distinguish varieties such as Andalusian Spanish, trans-Atlantic Spanish, and Judeo-Spanish, which in many ways constitutes proof of all the diachronic processes happening during and after the late medieval period. The sibilant merger and its resulting graphic confusion represent a crucial chapter in the development of Spanish. This study offers an extensive overview of the evidence, chrono- logy, dialectal divergence, theories of causation, and phonetic background of this merger. Condensing …

El Libro Como Performance, Craig Epplin Jun 2015

El Libro Como Performance, Craig Epplin

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research deals with the loss of distinction between the bilabial and labiodental sounds, /b/and /v/, in Spanish using a theoretical and linguistic diachronical perspective. The phonetic evolution of these sounds and their confusion dates back t0 the roots of the Spanish language in the Peninsula territories, especially in the north, in close geographic contact with the Basque. This confusion was already taking place in Vulgar Latin and, specifically, in the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Peninsula. This lack of distinction evolved slowly until the seventeenth century when both sounds lost their phonemic contrast. Differences between the …

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women’s equality, cross dressing, homoerotic desire—all the makings of a twenty-firstcentury comedy—were the focus of a seventeenth century play by Lope de Vega, La prueba de los ingenios (1612?-1613?). In the last two decades, interest in this work has increased considerably. Evidence of the rising popularity of the play is an English-language adaptation by Caridad Svich, which she titled The Labyrinth of Desire. The professional production at Miracle Theatre is the focus of this study. After a brief discussion of the homoerotic theme of the work and general issues of the translation and/or adaptation of the Comedia, I will then …

Dimela Eltit In Labor Force: Mysticism Of The Workers (La Diamela Eltit De Mano De Obra: Mistica De Los Trabajadores), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
