Welcome to our Somos y Estamos 2014 newsletter edition. The past year was marked by wonderful achievements on the part of our students, alumni, faculty and staff. It was a year of much gain, as we welcomed Dr. Mercedes Tubino Blanco to the department to teach linguistics and coordinate the 2000-2010 levels of basic Spanish (see the bio-sketch below for more information about her.) It was also a year of a significant loss with the passing of Dr. Carolyn Harris, our Somos y Estamos editor, last September. She left a lasting mark among all of us who knew her. In …

The Aspiration Of The Spanish Grapheme ‘H’, Carolina Gonzalo-Llera

One aspect of Spanish pronunciation that differs from English pronunciation is the phonetic treatment of the letter ‘h’. While this grapheme corresponds to a voiceless glottal fricative [h] in English (also known as “aspirated [h]”), it has no phonetic realization in Spanish. In other words, the letter ‘h’ in Spanish is not pronounced at all or is “silent”. This difference often results in Spanish pronunciation errors by L2 learners of the language. Doing Catalan Spanish: Pragmatic Resources And Discourse Strategies In Ways Of Speaking Spanish In Barcelona, Robert E. Vann

The last decade has seen the publication of many corpus-based studies about Spanish in Catalonia. With an emphasis on the linguistic characteristics that Spanish in Catalonia maintains or has acquired as a result of its prolonged contact with Catalan, these studies have started to catalog the lexicon, phonology and morphosyntax of Spanish in Catalonia. Relatively little attention has been dedicated, however, to the pragmatics of Spanish in Catalonia, that is, to the discourse strategies that constitute Catalan ways of speaking Spanish.
