Marvelous Ordinariness: Re-Engaging With Realism’S Social Function, Miranda Ochoa Natera

Against Romanticism, European literary realism of the 19th century aimed to provide an objective representation of reality through mimesis that could capture the truth in an objective way. Yet, its positivist approach severely narrowed down the complexity of truth, reality, and the mundane by wrongfully drawing the universal from the particular. A new way of engaging with realist literature from any time period, called Marvelous Ordinariness, rearranges this triad in ways that expand our understanding of our own and other realities portrayed. My purpose in this book is not to assess how well Ecuadorian literature fits into the broad Latin American literary scene or the global scene in particular, but instead to read and analyze how Ecuadorian writers communicate ideas about the world they live in through realism and fantasy. It is the nature of Ecuadorians to express their experience in these terms to portray a unique and multifaceted voice. The paper examines the role that urban poor played in discourses of national identity in the post-revolutionary period in Mexico (1920-1950). As Mexico emphasized its indigenous, rural past while at the same time becoming increasingly urban during its process of modernization, the underpinnings of a “proper” or “autochthonous” national identity were also necessarily questioned. These tensions are perhaps best exemplified in what Guillermo Sheridan has called the “dilemma” of “formative” and “speculative” models of the “national soul” (57). Este ensayo propone leer Villa Miseria también es América (1957) de Bernardo Verbitsky como una propuesta para superar el binario político-afectivo de la revolución anti-peronista de la década del 1950. En primer lugar, se argumenta que el personaje José Rodríguez, estudiante de izquierda torturado por el régimen peronista, puede entenderse como un retrato del artista comprometido. Publicada en el año 2010, la novela Lengua madre, de la escritora cordobesa María Teresa Andruetto, ofrece otro relato sobre la última dictadura argentina, que pone de relieve el problema de la complicidad civil e indirecta con la política represiva sistemática. Después del predominio del lenguaje alegórico abierto con la experiencia de la última dictadura militar (1976-1983), a mediados de los noventa el realismo vuelve a encontrar un espacio en la narrativa argentina. Dos son los factores fundamentales de este cambio: por un lado, el agotamiento del modelo de escritura basado en el desvío hiperliterario, que desde comienzos de la década enfrentó el interés por la revisién de la historia argentina (Avellaneda 2002; Dalmaroni, 2002); por el otro, la creciente crisis social creada por la aplicación de las políticas neoliberales acordadas en el Consenso de Washington (1995), las cuales impusieron un …
