The first magazine written by women in Ecuador is a time machine that allows knowing firsthand the thinking of women in the early twentieth century. It is also a catalyst to promote writing and searching for female identity. La Mujer: Revista Mensual de Literatura y Variedades is an unprecedented project conceived by the first Ecuadorian journalist, Zoila Ugarte. She was a multifaceted woman with feminist ideas who encouraged a group of women to express their ideas through literature and journalism.
This research analyzes the literary texts and articles of the magazine from a gender perspective and addresses historical aspects of …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Primitivism is a philosophical attitude and artistic view based on the search for origins. It is linked to a simpler conception of life and has been used as a strategy to critique modernity through literature and art, as well as a means to subvert traditional and academicist paradigms in cultural production. Although most scholars have considered Primitivism as a problem of Western ideology, Erik Camayd-Freixas, Marianna Torgovnick, and Ben Etherington have shown that Primitivism is present in all cultures and that its strategies have been deployed to deal with racial, ecological, economic, artistic, and gender issues.

Decolonial Resistance In Latinx Writings From Peru To The United States: A Portfolio, Isabel Norwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This collection begins with the premise that colonial relationships manifest in ways beyond exploitation of one nation by another. It relies on the decolonial theory of Walter D. Mignolo in its assumption that imbalances of power in the realms of race gender sexuality and class are fundamentally colonial. With this more expansive understanding of coloniality in mind I examine resistance to colonial exploitation in a range of texts from across the Americas. The first essay in this collection explores the role of the guinea pig in Andean food culture arguing that the continued consumption of guinea pig represents a form …

Teaching “Global Learning” Through The Ecotestimonio: Ojos Negros By Eduardo Sguiglia In Class, Laura Barbas-Rhoden
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This essay uses Eduardo Sguiglia’s Ojos negros (‘Black Eyes,’ 2010), a border-crossing, transnational ecotestimonial novel, to demonstrate step-by-step how instructors can effectively use ecotestimonial narratives in teaching undergraduate students to achieve global learning outcomes. Ecotestimonial texts prompt readers, and especially those readers removed from problems depicted, to confront the multiple facets of wicked problems of environmental degradation and to become aware of how the representation (or lack of representation) of those problems in different contexts shapes social responses to them. By moving students intentionally from comprehension of narrative and context to a focus on higher order thinking and on the …

[Introduction To] Escrituras A Ras De Suelo: Crónica Latinoamericana Del Siglo Xx, Marcela Aguilar, Claudia Darrigrandi, Mariela Méndez, Antonia Viu
Bookshelf

Literatura Judía Latinoamericana Contemporánea: Una Antología = Literatura Judaica Latino-Americana Contemporânea: Uma Antologia = Contemporary Jewish Latin American Literature: An Anthology, Stephen Sadow
Stephen Sadow

Sacrificio, Violencia Y Nación En Lituma En Los Andes De Mario Vargas Llosa, Cesar Valverde
Cesar Valverde
This paper addresses gender, nation and sacrifice as central elements in Lituma en los Andes (1993), a novel published by Mario Vargas Llosa after he ran unsuccessfully for the Peruvian presidency. The book presents a number of masculine models that are either inadequate, romanticized or brutal and sets them against a backdrop of a Peru deep in the economic and physical violence of war against the Maoist guerrillas of Sendero Luminoso, a Peru forced to live in a “superstitious and obscurantist cultural fog” because of its indigenous past. My study shows how the narrow worldview of the protagonist is challenged …

On Becoming Virginia: The Story Of A Man Who Crashed A Woman's Body: A Translation Of Alejandro Tapia Y Rivera's Postumo El Envirginiado [1882], Aaron M. M. Suko
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This thesis establishes a biographical and critical context pertaining to the life and work of the nineteenth-century Puerto Rican author Alejandro Tapia y Rivera (1826-1882), and presents a proposed translation of his final novel, Póstumo el envirginiado o la historia de un hombre que se coló en el cuerpo de una mujer (1882). In a discussion of Tapia’s life and work, I highlight important historical factors for comprehending the text’s and Tapia’s relatively obscure status. Then I turn to the text itself to analyze key themes and narrative techniques, referring to literary scholars of Póstumo in order to provide a …
