Monolingualism Of Us Poetry: Language Barriers For Poetry In Spanish, Benito Del Pliego Dec 2020

Monolingualism Of Us Poetry: Language Barriers For Poetry In Spanish, Benito Del Pliego

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The growing acceptance of US Latino voices in the US literary canon is also bringing to the attention of the critics the limitations of this inclusiveness. US Latino or Hispanic literatures are a far more complex phenomenon than commonly portrayed. This complexity is interlaced with the even wider frame of the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual literary realities of the US, a country where languages other than English have been historically relegated to a secondary role by concerted policies of cultural domination. In such context, it is relevant to explores the social origins and the implications of the systematical bias against the literary …

Making Christian Art In A Contemporary Setting, Raven Cordy Dec 2020

Making Christian Art In A Contemporary Setting, Raven Cordy

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Over the past 4 and a half years, I have studied contemporary art and seen countless artworks being made in an academic setting. In doing so, I have come to the realization that religious content is rare in today’s time. While it is not actively discouraged, the environment I am in and the current art community does not seem to be particularly interested in merging the two concepts. Without understanding why, I subconsciously kept art and my faith as separate entities for the first few years of my higher education. But as I matured and developed my own artwork, I …

Fantasy And Realism In Contemporary Ecuadorian Literature (1976-2006), Kimberly E. Contag Dec 2020

Fantasy And Realism In Contemporary Ecuadorian Literature (1976-2006), Kimberly E. Contag

MSU Authors Collection

My purpose in this book is not to assess how well Ecuadorian literature fits into the broad Latin American literary scene or the global scene in particular, but instead to read and analyze how Ecuadorian writers communicate ideas about the world they live in through realism and fantasy. It is the nature of Ecuadorians to express their experience in these terms to portray a unique and multifaceted voice. To that end, I propose a model for analyzing the function of fantasy and realism in literature, principally in the novel, short story, flash fiction, poetry, flash poetry, and theater, and offer …

Flavonol Specific 3-O Glucosyltransferase (Cp3gt) Mutant S20g+T21s: Enzyme Structure And Function, Hayden Fobare Dec 2020

Flavonol Specific 3-O Glucosyltransferase (Cp3gt) Mutant S20g+T21s: Enzyme Structure And Function, Hayden Fobare

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Flavonols are a major subclass of flavonoids and are considered the most abundant subclass of flavonoids. Flavonols are classified as having a hydroxyl group on the 3rd carbon of the C ring. The most prevalent modification to flavonols is glucosylation. The flavonol specific 3-O glucosyltransferase (Cp3GT) enzyme from grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is the topic of this research and specifically adds glucose to flavonols at the 3-OH position. The level of activity varies depending on the flavonol structure. This makes Cp3GT an ideal model system for studying the structure/function relationship of Cp3GT using site-directed mutants. S20G+T21S is a …

La Ficción Revelada. La Poética De La Autoficción En La Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea, Alba Devo Colis Nov 2020

La Ficción Revelada. La Poética De La Autoficción En La Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea, Alba Devo Colis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Modernización Y Espacio Urbano: El Protagonismo De La Ciudad En La Literatura Latinoamericana De Fin De Siglo (1880-1920), Gabriela Carolina Escobar Rodríguez Nov 2020

Modernización Y Espacio Urbano: El Protagonismo De La Ciudad En La Literatura Latinoamericana De Fin De Siglo (1880-1920), Gabriela Carolina Escobar Rodríguez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urban space has played a prominent role in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century Latin American literature and culture due to the historical and political importance that cities have had and to the relevant role they played in the passage of Latin-American to modernity at the end of the nineteenth century. In spite of this, the fin de siècle´s city novels have not received the attention they deserve. They have often been misclassified (the Latin American urban novel has been studied almost exclusively as a phenomenon of the second half of the 20th century) and/or ignored even though they …

La Tierra Que Pisamos: El Tercer Espacio En La Narrativa De Jesús Carrasco, Christina Ahmed

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Forest, The Trees, The Bark, The Pith: An Intensive Look At The Circulation Rates Of Primary Texts In Ten Major Literature Areas At The University Of Oregon Libraries, Jeff D. Staiger

Charleston Library Conference

This poster looks at the circulation rate for literary primary texts, which constitute a unique area of collecting in academic libraries: while they do not in most cases meet immediate research needs, it is assumed that libraries ought to acquire them, for reasons including future research needs, preservation of the cultural record, and the ability of members of the intellectual community to stay current, those these remain primarily tacit. The circulation trends of contemporary literary works in ten areas of literature (English, American, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin American, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian) over the past twenty years at the …

The Validity Of Online Learning And Teaching Of A Spanish Using An Online Delivery Mode, Rosalind Arthur Oct 2020

The Validity Of Online Learning And Teaching Of A Spanish Using An Online Delivery Mode, Rosalind Arthur

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Incorporating Online learning as an optional delivery mode of instruction in tertiary institutions with traditional campuses has been the trend in recent years. The question is whether it should be offered universally or with some discrimination. The presenter teaches Spanish at an HBCU which has been offering some general education courses online during the summer.

Needless to say, while online programs are lucrative, it behooves the instructors and institutions to ascertain the viability of the product in terms of the learning needs of the target population. Must enrollment into these courses be open to all or be vetted in order …

El Abrazo De La Serpiente O Un Mise-En-Scène Sin Fronteras, Sandra Ortiz-València

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

The Nuyorican movement was a cultural and intellectual movement beginning in the late 1960s through the 1970s that coincided with the era of civil rights struggle in the United States. The artists, writers, poets, and others in the movement were of Puerto Rican descent and resided in New York neighborhoods such as El barrio or Spanish Harlem, Loisaida or the Lower East Side and the South Bronx. The term “Nuyorican” was embraced as a badge of honor and pride by New York’s Puerto Rican community. It was during this time that cultural-specific institutions such El Museo del Barrio, Taller Boricua, …

Correspondencias Sumergidas: Latinoamericanismo, Performance Y Archivo En Manuel Ugarte, Fernando Degiovanni Sep 2020

Correspondencias Sumergidas: Latinoamericanismo, Performance Y Archivo En Manuel Ugarte, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

Affect And Feminist Storytelling In Three Spanish American Novels: Leonora By Elena Poniatowska, De Un Salto Descabalga La Reina By Carmen Boullosa, And El Infinito En La Palma De La Mano By Gioconda Belli, Ayelet Ishai

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation analyzes the portrayals of the female protagonists of three Spanish American biographical novels in an exploration of identity formation within feminist literary expressions. Amidst the resurgence of auto/biographical genres, there has been an effort to revive the stories of the historically maligned, and biographical novels about women have become increasingly prevalent. The movement to recover and revise the stories of women, including those who have traditionally been interpreted within misogynist societies, reaches beyond the written text to influence not only the way a character is seen and understood, but the ways that readers see and understand themselves. As …

Memorias | Electronic Literature + Live Coding Performance, Jessica A. Rodriguez Miss, Rolando Rodriguez, Alejandro Brianza, Luis M. Guzman

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Memorias is a web-based artistic project by Jessica Rodríguez developed through the Estuary platform —an online platform to host live coding languages. It is based in six autobiographical writings connected to the way she “hears”, “writes”, “watches”, “reads”, “sees” and “listens” to the word. Through these texts, six code works were designed and programmed, hybridizing natural and computing languages by parsing three existing live coding languages: Tidal Cycles, Punctual, and CineCer0.

Together, Memorias’ languages collide different materialities as well as visual and sonic approaches, going from voices in English, Spanish, Cello and Paetzold samples, audio and visual synthesis, and pre-recorded …

Borderless Flows In Federspiel’S Die Ballade Von Der Typhoid Mary, Charlotte Melin Jul 2020

Borderless Flows In Federspiel’S Die Ballade Von Der Typhoid Mary, Charlotte Melin

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Jürg Federspiel’s novel Die Ballade von der Typhoid Mary (1982) offers a fictionalized account of the notorious heroine’s life that ultimately sympathizes with her plight as an immigrant who faced exclusionary cultural barriers. Drawing on Rob Nixon’s concept of “slow violence” and recent approaches developed by material ecocriticism theory, my essay reinterprets this work from an environmental humanities perspective. The interpretation focuses on the interconnection of discourses related to disease, food, and pollution flows. Exploration of these themes leads to the conclusion that Federspiel’s work was prescient in its parallel engagement with both immigration issues and the emerging environmental concerns …

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado Jul 2020

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Since the first decades of the twentieth century, Peruvian poetic tradition has been characterized by experimental uses of language. Among these possibilities, some records tensioned this medium from the link with the plastic arts, as in the case of the poetry of José María Eguren, while others opted for the playing with the spatiality and visuality of the blank sheet, such as in the case of the work of Carlos Oquendo de Amat. However, it is not until the appearance of the poetry of César Vallejo, specifically with a poems like Trilce in 1922, that these breakages force us to …
