Por lo que respecta al siglo XIX, el viaje a París para la intelectualidad de América Latina fue una experiencia que determinó su actitud ante la problemática de sus respectivos países y que, si bien empezó siendo un viaje de aprendizaje y crecimiento, para algunos de ellos, terminó convirtiéndose en un proceso enajenante que los situaría en un no man’s land social.

The Weeping Land: Postcolonialism In La Llorona, Kirianna Marie Florez

Legends of weeping or vengeful women occur in diverse cultures throughout the world, such as Die Weisse Frau in Germany (Kirtley 157), the shrieking banshees in Ireland (Chiu), Kuchisake-onna in Japan (Wells), and La Llorona (“the weeping woman”) in the American continents. La Llorona legends can be found throughout parts of Latin America and the Southwest United States, but are most common in Mexico and parts of the Southwest where there is a high population of Chicanos/Chicanas and Mexican-Americans. “Imprólogo” De Octavio Paz. Apuntes Poético-Poetológicos Sobre La Poesía De Vasko Popa, Ilka Kressner

This study is a close-reading of Octavio Paz' "Imprólogo" (Árbol adentro), a poem that served as prologue to the fi rst anthology of poetry of the Serbian poet Vasko Popa. I propose to analyze the text under three aspects: first, it is a poetic practice that evolves through the examination of the poetry of Paz' friend and colleague. Second, "Imprólogo" is a study of the value of negation, a lyrical exercise carried out through the repeated deferral to being carried out. Thirdly, the poem offers a new, poetological reflection on intertextuality, conceived as a poetic dialogue in suspense. Thus, Paz …

On Becoming Virginia: The Story Of A Man Who Crashed A Woman's Body: A Translation Of Alejandro Tapia Y Rivera's Postumo El Envirginiado [1882], Aaron M. M. Suko

This thesis establishes a biographical and critical context pertaining to the life and work of the nineteenth-century Puerto Rican author Alejandro Tapia y Rivera (1826-1882), and presents a proposed translation of his final novel, Póstumo el envirginiado o la historia de un hombre que se coló en el cuerpo de una mujer (1882). In a discussion of Tapia’s life and work, I highlight important historical factors for comprehending the text’s and Tapia’s relatively obscure status. Then I turn to the text itself to analyze key themes and narrative techniques, referring to literary scholars of Póstumo in order to provide a …

Durante las últimas décadas, la literatura del Caribe Hispano se ha encargado de integrar representaciones alternativas de la nación en respuesta a un canon estrictamente universal, hegemónico y homogéneo constituido a través de la inclusión de cuerpos viables y la exclusión de cuerpos desviados, ya sean en términos de género, raza y orientación sexual. A Never Ending Journey: The Impossibilities Of Home In Sirena Selena Vestida De Pena And Flores De Otro Mundo, Irune Del Rio Gabiola

Reconsiderations of home have been crucially examined in Caribbean cultural productions. As Jamil Khader argues in her article on “Subaltern Cosmopolitanism: Community and Transnational Mobility in Caribbean Postcolonial Feminist Writings,” Caribbean feminists are faced with the task of challenging a conventional idea of home that has historically located women and other marginal subjects under conditions of oppression and exploitation. In focusing on the narratives by Aurora Levins Morales, Rosario Morales and Esmeralda Santiago, she points out the infinite sense of homelessness that invades, in particular, these Puerto Rican individuals who need to find more productive manners to articulate “home” while …
