Philippine Philippine, Or The Tropics In Cixous’S Dreaming True, Christian Jil Benitez, Phrae Chittiphalangsri Jan 2023

Philippine Philippine, Or The Tropics In Cixous’S Dreaming True, Christian Jil Benitez, Phrae Chittiphalangsri

Filipino Faculty Publications

Hélène Cixous’s oneiric ideation of the philippine (twin almond)—and by extension, her text Philippines (2009/2011)—primarily evokes love, or that force of attraction between two beings in which one can never say where each begins or ends. It is by the virtue of this entanglement that another philippine can be offered to this discourse: the Philippines that is that archipelago which encloses and opens up a particular location and reality within the tropics. This essay attempts to reconsider Cixous’s philippine via the Philippine, through dwelling on the stroke of homophony between these two signifiers and encountering them as materials in and …

Bagay: Articulating A New Materialism From The Philippine Tropics, Christian Jil R. Benitez Jan 2022

Bagay: Articulating A New Materialism From The Philippine Tropics, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

Keeping in time with the new materialist turn that aspires to respond to the common disregard to matter in Euro-Western tradition of thought while at the same time insisting the imperative to decolonize such turn, this essay attempts to articulate a Philippine rendition of new materialism, through the notion of bagay, nominated here as a thing whose materiality is intuited to be appropriately determinable concerning a particular moment. This attempt is extended through turning to Bagay poetry, “a concept, a proposition” (Lumbera 2005, 136) from the 1960s toward a Philippine poetics that is most attuned to the concreteness of …

Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg Jan 2022

Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg

Filipino Faculty Publications

Tropical Materialisms concur on at least three things: humans are always entangled with non-human/material agents; such entanglement is necessary for any creative act to take place; and these same entanglements allow us to interrogate and re-evaluate preconceived notions about the world. This Special Issue aligns itself with the fields of new materialism and posthumanism. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to rearticulate these fields in tropical terms, that is, with scholarly and creative practices from and about the tropical world. This focus is crucial given that current scholarship in new materialism and posthumanism predominantly comes from European temperate contexts …

Vernacular Virtual: Toward A Philippine New Materialist Poetics Authors, Christian Jil R. Benitez Jan 2022

Vernacular Virtual: Toward A Philippine New Materialist Poetics Authors, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

This essay turns to and through the Philippine vernacular in order to open up the possibility of a new materialist regard of literature, one that specifically stems from the Philippine tropics. It proposes that the opportunity for such a tropical materialism rests on the onomatopoeism observed in the vernacular. Onomatopoeia, as a material linguistic principle, is recognized here to be most instructive in reunderstanding Philippine folk poetry — texts which date back to the precolonial period — in terms beyond mere representation. As a counterpoint to these traditional literary texts, the essay also ruminates on the poetry of Jose Garcia …

Telepathic Visions: On Alvin Yapan’S An Kubo Sa Kawayanan (2015), Christian Jil R. Benitez Jun 2021

Telepathic Visions: On Alvin Yapan’S An Kubo Sa Kawayanan (2015), Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

This article considers the practice of encouraged gazing in Alvin Yapan's An Kubo sa Kawayanan (“The Hut in the Bamboo Grove”) (2015) as a possible exercise on revering things. As such, it is wagered to be instructive towards a reunderstanding of vision as a form of material encounter with things beyond their mere objectification. Sense of sight is argued to be a human telepathic ability, that is, a distance (tele) feeling (pathein) with and for thigns, despite and because of their indeterminate materialities. Through looking closely at the rhetorical engagements of Yapan's Kubo with its various …

May Tiktik Sa Bubong, Allan N. Derain Jan 2021

May Tiktik Sa Bubong, Allan N. Derain

Filipino Faculty Publications

The study examines the motif of ominous bird calls auguring the coming of aswang; from the historical accounts of Antonio Pigafetta and Fr. Jose Castaño; the ethnographic notes of Frank Lynch; and the Panay-Bukidnon epic “Hinilawud.” The comparative reading of these texts configures a critical response to the notion of the community of listeners failing to become credible earwitness as they have misconstrued their own soundscape - a rationalization of the supernatural usually held by etic observers of such communities. The critical analysis follows the dynamics operating in the aswang-bird tandem and the ambiguous role the bird plays in the …

Salaysay, Saysay, Salukoy: Tungo Sa Dalumat Ng Alamat, Christian Jil R. Benitez Jan 2020

Salaysay, Saysay, Salukoy: Tungo Sa Dalumat Ng Alamat, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Rethinking Filipino Masculinities: The Case Of The Cosmopolitan Tambay, Joseph T. Salazar Jan 2019

Rethinking Filipino Masculinities: The Case Of The Cosmopolitan Tambay, Joseph T. Salazar

Filipino Faculty Publications

In the Philippines, tambay refers to men who are notorious for hanging out in the streets for long hours owing to lack of formal work. Traditionally, representations of the tambay have revolved around drinking and the ironic display of patriarchal power despite the lack of clear contributions to the household economy. The study looks at the implications of transnational and economic shifts in rethinking the behaviors and attitudes of the tambay in Metropolitan Manila. The rising number of malls in the metropolis and the significant increase in dollar remittances from overseas have allowed for a shift in material and cultural …

Pampanitikang Gawain Ang Pagsasalin, Michael M. Coroza Jan 2018

Pampanitikang Gawain Ang Pagsasalin, Michael M. Coroza

Filipino Faculty Publications

Wika …
