The function of an advertisement is to make the advertised product (or service) appealing to an audience; the larger the audience, the less specific the ad must be in its appeal. An advertisement can be a very clear indicator of the societal values and norms of its country of origin -a sort of "mirror of the soul" of the nation that produced it. There are many cultural references that are made, consciously or unconsciously, through which others may gain insight into the workings of a particular society or culture.

Theory Of Prosaics In Literature And History: Leo Tolstoy And Lion Feuchtwanger, Angelica Ushatova '94
Honors Projects
In this paper, I intend to explore the theory of prosaics, which offers a quite different approach to life and historical events in particular. This theory was introduced;by the American scholar Gary Saul Morson. Morson coined the term prosaics in order to describe a concept that permeates the work of Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), a Russian literary critic and philosopher. The most important concepts developed by Bakhtin are prosaics (Morson's and Emerson's term), unfinalizability, and dialogue. Bakhtin created also various theories: a comprehensive theory of literature that privileges prose and the novel, theories of languages, and of literary genres. Bakhtin was …
An Interview With Armand Schwerner, Willard Gingerich
An Interview With Armand Schwerner, Willard Gingerich
Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Armand Schwemer was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1927 and came to the United States in 1936. He has worked as a performance artist and musician with Jackson MacLow, Jerome Rothenberg, Gum Velez and others, and has published over fifteen books of poetry. His The Tablets, an ongoing work begun in the 1960s, remains one of the most protean and provocative, though underacknowledged, explorations of open composition to have emerged since mid-century. The following interview, conducted by Willard Gingerich, is excerpted from a longer series of exchanges which took place between April 4 and June 29, 1993.

Validation Of Goals For Pre-Departure Missionary Orientation, Donna M. Worley
Validation Of Goals For Pre-Departure Missionary Orientation, Donna M. Worley
Dissertations
Problem
Cross-cultural orientation programs facilitate missionary preparedness. Orientation is more effective if driven by valid and suitable goals determined before methods are selected and programs implemented. This study attempted to identify valid goals for pre-departure programs and develop a framework for selecting them.
Method
The goals of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Institute for World Mission (IWM) were selected for validation. IWM is a 4-6 week pre-departure orientation program that started in 1966 and had effectively prepared 2,500+ cross-cultural missionaries by 1993. Their goals are broad areas suitable for establishing sub-goals and objectives. The validation process comprised four phases: identification and …
