Uncharted Waters: "Hidden" Jazz Collections At The U.W.O Music Library, Lisa Rae Philpott

Lisa Rae Philpott

Popular music has long been ignored by academic music programs and their associated libraries. If we are now playing 'catch-up' with pop music, then what is the status of jazz music? At Western, surprising collections of jazz music exist, but are hidden. This presentation offers an overview of the Simmons Collection and the CKGW Radio Orchestra collection, and highlights some of the Canadian content contained therein.

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle May 2012

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle

Daniel E. Prindle

This thesis proposes a methodology for understanding the form of a Baroque prelude, particularly the preludes to the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Four musical dimensions, tonal structure, motive, texture, and the potential implications of a piece’s genre, parse the preludes in different ways. As the features of these musical dimensions undergo either an evolution or a dramatic change over the course of each prelude, they each suggest a different form. Points of change in each dimension delineate segments in the music. When aligned, these changes create significant formal junctures and suggest an overall form …

Repercussions Of Uniqueness For The 21st Century Vocalist, Leigh Carriage Nov 2011

Repercussions Of Uniqueness For The 21st Century Vocalist, Leigh Carriage

Dr Leigh Carriage

In 2004 Californian singer and harpist Joanna Newsom, released her first album The Milk Eyed Mender with a vocal approach that features many child-like qualities with glottal fries and vocal squeaks, which are at times rather unwieldy. This great start to her career later resulted in her getting nodules, which required surgery. As part of her recovery she worked with a speech therapist and vocal teacher to regain her voice and be able to sing safely again. The result, heard on her latest CD Have One On Me (2010), is a dramatically different vocal sound, with qualities that are richer …

Completed "Scales in Fives." This is a scale exercise book for clarinetists in two volumes-beginner and advanced. Chromatic, all major, melodic and harmonic minor scales are written out in five note groupings with repeat signs and rehearsal numbers for easy access in rehearsals and lessons. This format of learning scales has proven successful in my teaching at WKU and I am currently looking for a publisher for these books. A sample page is available for download on this site.

Ernst Widmer’S Kosmos Latinoamericano: A Progressive Piano Method, Oscar E. Macchioni

Oscar Macchioni

Article. Published February/March Issue, 2011.

Latin American piano repertoire for the elementary to intermediate level is not an easy subject since most of the available scores of famous Latin American composers are for the late intermediate or advanced level. Ernst Widmer (1927-1990), a Swiss composer who moved to Bahia, Brazil in 1956, composed Kosmos Latinoamericano between 1978 and 1982. It is an eclectic collection of 146 pieces organized in four volumes ranging from the beginner to the intermediate/advance levels. It includes an array of musical elements such as: original compositions and improvisations; readings and exercises; popular melodies and rhythms from …
