As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this article presents findings from research on processes of tenure in Canadian higher education music faculties. The Principle Investigator and three teams of two researchers analyzed the process of tenure at three Canadian institutions to gain insight into how tenure decisions are made in relation to gender and race/ethnicity. The researchers used institutional ethnography, developed by sociologist Dorothy Smith, to examine institutional documents that organize tenure, as well as how documents organize people’s actions, studied through interviews with key stakeholders, such as directors, tenure applicants, and union representatives. This study addressed the topic of peer assisted learning, specifically ClassWide Peer Tutoring (CWPT), in a middle school string orchestra classroom. The purpose of the current study was to implement peer assisted learning into a middle school string orchestra classroom in order to determine the impacts of peer assisted learning versus teacher-directed instruction on middle school string orchestra students’ abilities to notate correct rhythm counting. Over the course of four weeks, the researcher implemented two different instructional strategies, CWPT and teacher-directed instruction (TDI), into a sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade string orchestra classroom. A philosophy of music education refers to the value of music, the value of teaching music, and how to practically utilize those values in the music classroom. This thesis explores the philosophies of Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, Carl Orff, Zoltan Kodaly, Bennett Reimer, and David Elliott, and suggests practical applications or their philosophies in the orchestral classroom, especially in the context of ear training and improvisation. From these philosophies, the author develops their own personal philosophy of music education, most broadly defined by the claim that music is key to experiencing and understanding feelingful experiences.
