Exploring The Collegiate Choir Participant's Values Within Ensemble Performances, Kaelyn Hunter
Exploring The Collegiate Choir Participant's Values Within Ensemble Performances, Kaelyn Hunter
Honors Theses
This study examined how collegiate choral ensemble participants viewed their highest quality performance and their favorite performance. Examining characteristics of performances may encourage conversations about performance values between directors and students. Limited research has been done about musicians’ views, as getting accurate and in-the-moment documentation of how musicians feel about their performances is challenging. To provide more insight into this previously understudied topic, this study aimed to explore the musicians’ perspectives on their performances and how their emotions and repertoire are intertwined.
The Primary Investigator (PI) conducted an anonymous study among the 2022–2023 choral ensemble participants at The University of …
Transgender And Nonbinary Attitudes Toward The Choral Music Education Major Experience, Bailee Green
Transgender And Nonbinary Attitudes Toward The Choral Music Education Major Experience, Bailee Green
Honors Theses
Transgender and nonbinary individuals face unique challenges in the choral community because of their gender identity. The foundation of the choral ensemble and its methods are rooted in the gender binary, making it hard for gender-expansive singers to feel a sense of belonging.
The purpose of this thesis project was to gauge the experiences and opinions of transgender and nonbinary choral music education majors who participate in at least one choral ensemble. Data was obtained through a voluntary survey that asked participants how their gender affected aspects of their experience as a choral music education major. Survey results led to …

The Incorporation And Effect Of Movement In The Elementary Classroom, Caroline L. Rhett
Honors Theses
The main purpose of this thesis project was to examine the incorporation of movement in preschool and elementary classrooms and identify its effects. A review of methodology from musicians/educators such as Zoltán Kodály, Carl Orff, and Emile Jacques-Dalcroze provided a foundation for the research topic. Other factors surrounding music and movement included the physical, mental, and developmental aspects. These factors were studied through the lens of authors and researchers such as Howard Gardner.
The practice used was primarily observation, which took place in local music classrooms as well as at a Carl Orff Workshop. Observation led to the conclusion that …
Moving To The Beat: The Role Of Movement On The Perception Of Musical Expressivity, Molly Evans
Moving To The Beat: The Role Of Movement On The Perception Of Musical Expressivity, Molly Evans
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect body movement would have on listeners’ (N = 7) perceptions of the musical expressivity of different conducting patterns. An audio/video recording of a conductor from the University of Southern Mississippi was used for the stimulus, and listeners were asked to rate each video recording on perceived expressiveness, congruency between movement and music, and participant’s willingness to play under each conducting style. While the video portion of the stimulus changed to reflect two different conducting styles (beat centric – traditional movements that adhere to notated meter, non-beat centric – non-traditional movements …
Why We Do What We Do: A Look At Factors That Draw College Freshmen To Music Education, Emilee V. Randall
Why We Do What We Do: A Look At Factors That Draw College Freshmen To Music Education, Emilee V. Randall
Honors Theses
At some point during college, most students face conflict when it comes to their choice in major. Indeed, an estimated 75 percent of students change their major at least once before graduating (Gordon, 1995). Specifically in the field of music education, there are instances where at least 50 percent of freshman music education majors do not complete the music education degree through to graduation (Gavin, 2010, p. 94). When considering statistics like these, it becomes obvious that selecting a major has serious implications for the majority of students, not just undecided ones. These students may have difficulty perceiving themselves as …

Instruction Of Hearing Impaired Students In School Instrumental Music Programs, Rachel Strong
Honors Theses
Despite several major advances in education for people who are deaf or hearing impaired, there are still some pervasive negative attitudes and perceptions in the education world towards this community of students. The purpose of this study was to discover the attitudes and perceptions that band directors in Mississippi public schools have towards hearing impaired students participating in instrumental ensembles. This study utilized a survey that was sent to every director in the state. The survey contained several questions pertaining to whether directors had ever had a hearing impaired student in their ensembles before, what accommodations were made for those …

In order to collect rich, reliable, and valid data, several different methods of data collection were employed. This study focuses on the prior research conducted by Dr. Ostling and Dr. Battisti. A survey consisting of a series of questions …
