Creating Exhibits For Small History Museums On A Limited Budget, Annveig Bugge
Creating Exhibits For Small History Museums On A Limited Budget, Annveig Bugge
Master's Projects and Capstones
In this capstone project, I study the process of developing an exhibition for small history museums. Working with the Treasure Island Museum, a small history museum in San Francisco, I explore the different options for developing exhibitions for small history museums, with small budgets, in contrast to the more well funded practice that larger museums have the opportunity to produce. For museums, exhibits are the media used to communicate with visitors, and it is important to install new ones regularly. Being limited by budget and staff constraints this can be a challenge, but I argue that the benefits from the …

Jackson Creek Arts And Trails, Llc: Museum Travel Immersion Programs, Else C. Trygstad-Burke
Master's Projects and Capstones
Museums have become increasingly oriented towards reaching new audiences, encouraging visitor loyalty, and informing the public about their overall relevance. Innovation in programming is a centerpiece of this effort, including a provision of programs for all age groups and demographics. At the same time that this transformation occurs in the museum world, similar changes are taking place in the leisure, travel and tourism industries. A continuously rapid increase in globalism and cultural access contributes to an atmosphere in which travelers can expand their goals and purposes within the context of a travel experience. This report will demonstrate that these trends …
Riding The Wave: How The Philanthropic Revolution Will Impact Museums In The United States And Canada, Sarah M. Mackey
Riding The Wave: How The Philanthropic Revolution Will Impact Museums In The United States And Canada, Sarah M. Mackey
Master's Projects and Capstones
This capstone project explores the history of philanthropy from 1970 to the present, and presents a strategy for museums to leverage contemporary trends in nonprofit giving. The methods proposed in this project are specifically targeted at engaging new community leaders and the family members of legacy donors. I have researched and created an updated job description and hiring plan for a Transformational Gift Officer. This person would be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and stewarding the donor portfolio outlined in this project. The individual who will be successful in this role will be able to move past institutional silos and collaboratively …
Leandro Erlich: Towards A Collaborative Relationship Between Architecture And Art, Isabel Tassara
Leandro Erlich: Towards A Collaborative Relationship Between Architecture And Art, Isabel Tassara
Master's Projects and Capstones
For this Museum Studies capstone project, I presented and developed a proposal and project plan for an exterior interactive exhibition of an Argentinean artist, Leandro Erlich, at the Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM) in San Francisco, California. After researching diverse conflicts between architects and artists in the art museum context, my goal was to show an approach in which art can “dialogue” with the exterior features of the CJM’s cutting edge building. To be presented on the courtyard entrance of the Libeskind construction, the exhibition that I propose will potentially prove that an effective relationship can be established outside the common …
Accessibility And Technology: Remote Access To Art Through Telepresence Robotics, Jenna M. Hebert
Accessibility And Technology: Remote Access To Art Through Telepresence Robotics, Jenna M. Hebert
Master's Projects and Capstones
This capstone project details a proposal for a remote tour pilot program and community partnership written for the Art Institute of Chicago, Snow City Arts and the John H Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The proposal seeks to provide a model for remote accessibility to art museums for visitors with mobility disabilities. The pilot program utilizes telepresence technology as a tool for providing remote tours and for emulating the social benefits of a museum visit. Within the program, telepresence technology becomes a mechanism for communication and collaboration between the museum and members of the community, allowing individuals previously unable …
Through The Eyes Of Our Neighbors: A Collaborative Model For Cultural, Educational, And Community Organizations To Meaningfully Address Homelessness In San Francisco, Lauren Kingsley
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
The following paper proposes a collaborative model in which an arts institution, a community organization, and a university come together to present a dual photography and architecture/ design exhibition, along with a series of public programs and education initiatives, to raise awareness regarding the issue of homelessness, empower members of the homeless community, and encourage museum-goers to take action. Furthermore, the project aims to partner with the City of San Francisco to implement design solutions to homelessness. The project, while large in scope, was inspired by a rather simple idea: that the museum should respond more effectively to its …
Collections Management Systems At Natural History Museums: A Centralized Approach, Allison M. Pohl
Collections Management Systems At Natural History Museums: A Centralized Approach, Allison M. Pohl
Master's Projects and Capstones
Natural history museum collections are an invaluable learning tool for audiences of many ages. However, learning experiences can be hampered if collections are poorly managed. Inconsistent object numbering systems, scant information associated with a specimen, and differences in records management styles of individuals in the same organization all stem from the lack of collections management standards set forth by some institutions. Natural history museums historically manage their collections in a decentralized manner, with each collections department responsible for its own objects, managing records as the staff sees fit. This report advocates for the unification of collections in natural history museums …
Improving Cal Nagpra: Honoring Native American Rights, Kim Turner
Improving Cal Nagpra: Honoring Native American Rights, Kim Turner
Master's Projects and Capstones
The California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (Cal NAGPRA) became state law in 2001. Its purpose was to create a process whereby California tribes could seek to repatriate human remains and objects from their cultural heritage from museums and custodial institutions. Cal NAGPRA includes a number of shortcomings that have impeded the ability of tribes to successfully reclaim objects from their heritage. The ethical implications of museums retaining cultural objects and human remains, often confiscated from Native peoples or their tribal lands, has been a principal social justice topic of USF’s museum studies program. This capstone describes a …

Master's Projects and Capstones
The following paper discusses the need to increase access for English Language Learners (ELLs) and recent immigrant teens in contemporary art museums through the implementation of participatory programming. This capstone project proposes a teen council program for English Language Learners and recent immigrants at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA, and was created with the following goals in mind: (1) to increase access for ELL and recent immigrant teens in art museums, (2) to increase participatory programming for ELL and recent immigrant teens, and (3) to foster meaningful relationships between ELL and recent immigrant teens and museums. The …
Model Behavior: Using Photogrammetry For Collections Storage Planning, Katherine Sundra
Model Behavior: Using Photogrammetry For Collections Storage Planning, Katherine Sundra
Master's Projects and Capstones
Proper and efficient collections storage is often a challenge for museums. As collections outgrow their facilities, institutions struggle to find additional space, often resorting to hasty moves of their objects into ill-fitting placements. A large-scale collections move is a slowgoing process, requiring manual measurement and countless trial-and-error sessions. An unnoticed support beam, a low entryway, or uneven flooring can derail even the most well-planned collections move, costing an organization unexpected additions in time and labor expenses. Advancements in emerging technologies, however, may soon eliminate this problem. This capstone explores the use of photogrammetry and 3D modeling to plan a collections …
The Museum Wiki: A Model For Online Collections In Museums, Morgan Schlesinger
The Museum Wiki: A Model For Online Collections In Museums, Morgan Schlesinger
Master's Projects and Capstones
Museums increasingly use the Internet, digitization, and social tagging to publicize their collections in online databases. However, these online collections museums frequently lack contextual and interpretive information that objects require to be understood by the general public. Other sources, such as Wikipedia, consistently deliver more in-depth information on artworks than museums. The Museum Wiki proposes a solution for the Museum Studies field to address this information gap by emulating Wikipedia’s framework of interlinked articles for online museum collections. Additionally, this model raises the online visibility of these collections by editing relevant Wikipedia articles with information from articles written for …
Hidden Museum: A Behind-The-Scenes Tour For Contemporary Audiences, Michael B. Glazier
Hidden Museum: A Behind-The-Scenes Tour For Contemporary Audiences, Michael B. Glazier
Master's Projects and Capstones
The mystery of what lies behind a museum’s closed doors has intrigued visitors and perpetuated museum mythology for decades. Whether it’s peeking into collections storage, or being guided through rooms off the exhibition floor, visitors want unique access to museum collections. This Master’s Capstone project investigates the topic of behind-the-scenes tours within museums, asks what they look like today, and how they will develop in the future. Using this research I have created a project proposal to film a behind-the-scenes tour that will solve questions of public visibility and collection access for a San Francisco area history museum. A successful …
Achieving Access: Designing A Museum Accessibility Consulting Firm, Lauren J. Garnese
Achieving Access: Designing A Museum Accessibility Consulting Firm, Lauren J. Garnese
Master's Projects and Capstones
This capstone paper explores the need for an accessibility consulting firm to help museums and cultural institutions implement Americans with Disabilities Act policy adherence, universal design and accessible programming that increases the inclusion of people with disabilities in their organizations. The paper begins with a literature review that synthesizes the history of disability legislation and its relationship to museums, explores how museums can go beyond legal compliance and discusses the infrastructure suggested to implement accessibility efforts in an institution. The paper then proposes a project to create an accessibility consulting firm that assists museums in achieving their accessibility goals and …
Iain Muirhead, Iain Muirhead
Iain Muirhead, Iain Muirhead
CGU MFA Theses
Artist IAIN MUIRHEAD seeks possibility in a world of massive change. His work cultivates instability and chases an ungrounded experience. Systemic complexity and creative destruction are characteristic. Muirhead uses paint, objects, photography, installation, and video to break apart and reconfigure form and space. Terror often looms. Entropy gives way to emergence.
Passive Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) And Museum Collections, Owen Kinser
Passive Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) And Museum Collections, Owen Kinser
Master's Projects and Capstones
Keeping a collection organized and accounted for is a never-ending struggle for museums of every type. New to museums and the collections management field, Radio Frequency Identification is a growing technology that museums can implement to keep track of the location, status, condition, and movement of their objects. Objects are labeled with RFID “tags” which enable them to communicate custom information to a reader and ultimately a database. This implementation would save time, money, and stress among collections staff members. Using the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas, as my subject museum, I propose implementing a pilot …

“All Museums Will Become Department Stores”: The Development And Implications Of Retailing At Museums And Heritage Sites, Jamie Larkin
“All Museums Will Become Department Stores”: The Development And Implications Of Retailing At Museums And Heritage Sites, Jamie Larkin
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Museums and heritage sites have provided merchandise for visitors to purchase since their earliest incarnations as public attractions in the 18th century. Despite this longevity scant academic research has been directed towards such activities. However, retailing – formalised in the emergence of the museum shop – offers insights into a range of issues, from cultural representation and education, to eco- nomic sustainability. This paper outlines the historical development of retailing at museums and heritage sites in the UK, before offering a summary of current issues, illustrated by a case study of contemporary retailing at Whitby Abbey. The paper demonstrates how …
1916 And The Challenges Of Commemorative Exhibitions In Ireland, Siobhan Doyle
1916 And The Challenges Of Commemorative Exhibitions In Ireland, Siobhan Doyle
Conference papers
Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for national cultural institutions in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and transnational audiences. The Easter Rising of 1916- a failed rebellion against British rule- is the pivotal event in the creation of the modern Irish state and is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity.
With 2016 marking 100years since the Easter Rising, my paper will explore how the recent centenary commemorations of this historic event have been a …

French Women In Art: Reclaiming The Body Through Creation/Les Femmes Artistes Françaises : La Réclamation Du Corps À Travers La Création, Liatris Hethcoat
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The research I have conducted for my French Major Senior Thesis is a culmination of my passion for and studies of both French language and culture and the history and practice of Visual Arts. I have examined, across the history of art, the representation of women, and concluded that until the 20th century, these representations have been tools employed by the makers of history and those at the top of the patriarchal system, used to control women’s images and thus women themselves. I survey these representations, which are largely created by men—until the 20th century. I discuss pre-historical …
Museum 4.0 As The Future Of Steam In Museums, Mark Walhimer
Museum 4.0 As The Future Of Steam In Museums, Mark Walhimer
The STEAM Journal
Informal STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities (programs) and exhibits are common in science centers, children’s museums and natural history museums. As museums change to Museum 4.0 models (1), the STEAM exhibits and programs in museums also change. Museums 4.0 is the transformation of museums from a monolithic fixed location institution to a nimble community driven event driven organization. The Museum 4.0 becomes personalized to the visitor without fixed outcomes and without the physical restrictions of a single fixed location. As museums evolve to a Museum 4.0 model with visitor lead activities, STEAM activities within museums also change …
Egyptian Mummy Ct Scan Analysis And A Comparison Of Midwest Museum Practices For The Grand Rapids Public Museum, M. Kate Peterson
Egyptian Mummy Ct Scan Analysis And A Comparison Of Midwest Museum Practices For The Grand Rapids Public Museum, M. Kate Peterson
Anthropology Master's Theses
To meet the partial requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from Western Michigan University, the following internship was completed between June 2015 and September 2016. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan analysis was conducted on the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s mummy, Nakhte-Bastet-Iru. This analysis was a collaborative effort by myself and medical and museum professionals. Insight into the mummy’s life and culture was uncovered through examination and analysis of paleoradiological views of her remains. Additional research into the practices of other Midwest museums provided valuable knowledge of current trends in the dissemination and exhibition of mummy CT scan …

The Intercontinental Reflections Of An Eighteenth-Century Mexican Rebozo, Eleanor A. Laughlin
The Intercontinental Reflections Of An Eighteenth-Century Mexican Rebozo, Eleanor A. Laughlin
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
The eighteenth-century Mexican rebozo (scarf) is an excellent example of a garment type that crossed not only ocean currents, but also boundaries of race and class. Initially, the rebozo was associated with indigenous culture in Mexico. Evidence suggests that the rebozo existed during the pre-Columbian period,1 but it has been most commonly remembered as an article of clothing used by the Spaniards to cover the exposed bodies of indigenous women in the church setting. Aspects of the scarf’s decorative elements, such as fringe and dying methods, are thought to have been inspired by Asian styles that arrived in Mexico via …

Deaccessioning In Small Museums: A Historical View And Lessons From The Past, Kristin Lapos
Deaccessioning In Small Museums: A Historical View And Lessons From The Past, Kristin Lapos
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Deaccessioning is a frequent topic of conversation in even small and mid-sized museums in the twenty-first century. With collections costs soaring, budgets dwindling, and space ever more limited, museums must deaccession to survive and prosper. However, deaccessioning and disposal have become hugely controversial, both among museum professionals and with the general public in the past few decades. Scholars like Stephen Weil and Marie Malaro argue that deaccessioning and disposal were non-issues prior to the 1970s. Is this true? If so, how did museum professionals handle deaccessioning and disposal of objects from their collections before this time?
This thesis explores the …
