Into The Streets: The Residuality Of 'Otherness' And Material Representation In The Cityscape, Addison Elizabeth Mckown
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Throughout history, the ideology of ‘Othering’ has taken precedence in our capacity to connect with people outside of our home borders. The layers of history evoked within the German streets; the commemoration of persecuted others; the mediated expressions of socially ignored out-groups; are constitutively shaping the receptive responses of the modern refugee crisis. The residuality of this otherness is represented in the material cityscape, and I argue that it is in the space of the urban streets where belonging is contested. The cityscape is a constant mirror between the past and the future as the cyclical dynamics of social power …

Countries which have been able to offer free tertiary education are being applauded while the United States tries to find a way to rectify its high tertiary education costs. Bedecke Deinen Himmel, Zeus! Goethe And The Quest For Individual Sovereignty, Anthony D. Magestro
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
This project examines Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werther (The Sorrows of Young Werther, 1774) and his early poetry and their influence on the German literary movement of Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress, 1770-1785). As a reaction to the rise of rationalism, Goethe’s texts embody the value of raw, subjective emotion versus logical, objective understanding of the preceding Enlightenment period. Through his literature, Goethe challenges the status quo of absolute rule of church and state as well as humanity’s relationship with God: are we bound to the laws of the Almighty’s design or are …
