Review Of: Conversational Strategies In Akan: Prosodic Features And Discourse Categories, Edward J. Vajda

The existing literature on conversation analysis (CA) has largely ignored the prosodic features that characterize spontaneous dialog, focusing instead on 'spoken prose, "invented" discourse, or written text'. This study is valuable both for the typological perspective its subject language brings to the study of CA, as well as for its innovative examination of a maximally wide range of prosodic features used in natural conversation-features that have all too often been ignored even in more intensively studied languages.

Scholars agree that Héraclius (1646) occupies the extreme point of plot complication in the Cornelian oeuvre. Numerous events have occurred prior to the action of the play, events that are necessary to the spectators' understanding of what transpires onstage. Twenty years before the play opens, Phocas assassinated the emperor Maurice as well as his sons and took his throne. Léontine, the royal governess, switched the youngest of Maurice's sons, Héraclius, with her own son, thus sacrificing the latter's life so that the royal blood of Maurice might survive. Not long after, Léontine made a second substitution, this time switching …

John. A. Merchant examines the impact of a contemporary cultural movement, Irish Ireland, on its Polish counterpart, Young Poland. He traces the reception of Irish literature in the form of translations of works by W. B. Yeats and John Millington Synge in Poland through translations by Jan Kasprowicz, Zenon "Miriam" Przesmycki and others as well as through a variety of cultural commentaries by Polish critics and by means of stage productions of Irish plays by theater directors, such as Tadeusz Pawlikowski.

The Debate Over Annexing Texas And The Emergence Of Manifest Destiny, Lyon Rathbun

Scholars have long understood that the ideology of manifest destiny congealed out of the millennial ideals embedded in American culture. However, they have not fully appreciated that manifest destiny only became a national ideology by overwhelming the arguments that were first voiced during the Monroe administration to resist the incorporation of Texas into the Union. Understanding how the secular ideals of the classical republican tradition were used to resist the inclusion of Texas can help us understand the crystallization of manifest destiny into a theologized ideology in the 1840s.

Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita (1966-67) has been praised highly for both its literary merit and its spiritual significance. Many critical studies explain the complex nature of the interrelationship between the natural and supernatural in the novel. The unexpected roles that otherworldly beings play in the novel, the resulting satire, and the fantastic in the plot create a certain inevitable puzzlement about the structure and meaning of the novel. Attempts to explain the implications of the spiritual elements underpinning the fantastic span through various belief systems, but given the complexity of Bulgakov's novel, a coherent, conclusive explanation has been …

Schulz-Grobert argues that scholars' pursuit of a phantom Low German original, and their "fixation" on Herman Bote as its author, have directed scholarly attention away from the role the editors in Strassburg played in its production. While TE scholarship to date is in agreement that a Strassburg editor had a hand in the final version of the book, Schulz-Grobert argues that the circle of humanists and literati associated with Grüninger's press in Strassburg were alone responsible for producing the book.There is no need to assume the existence of a Low German original, he states, nor does the "ERMAN B" acrostic, …

Building upon the best tradition of missionary-inspired descriptive linguistic work fostered in connection with Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) activities, editors Desmond Derbyshire and Geoffrey Pullum launched HAL during the mid1980s as a means of attracting scholarly attention to one of the world's most persistently ignored linguistic areas. With the appearance of Vol. 4, HAL coverage of the Amazon now increases to three typological studies, four historical-comparative analyses, and ten grammatical descriptions of languages belonging to eight different genetic groupings. In discussing Bonheur d'occasion Patrick Coleman has identified Gabrielle Roy's difficulty finding a vehicle to convey convincingly her insight that "an awareness of separation is a necessary condition of any moment of real connection" as one of her chief esthetic problems (77). Her successful negotiation of this tension in La Route d'Altamont owes much to presenting consolation as an antidote to separation. First, rather than deny the reality of separation, consolation mediates between it and union by allowing Roy to portray separation coexisting with communion; even the most stable consolations must be constantly renewed since consolation is more a process …

In Sitio a Eros and El coloquio de las perras, Rosario Ferré turns the traditional Spanish American essay into a most propitious space to investigate issues of gender and more specifically, writing as a potential vehicle for women's ultimate liberation. In these two books, in which the line between literary criticism and feminist criticism is hard to separate, she joins the ranks of writers such as Gabriela Mistral, Victoria Ocampo and Rosario Castellanos, Latin America's best-known female predecessors in the essay.

Anus As Oculus: Satire And Subversion In Eustorg De Beaulieu's Du Cul , Russell J. Ganim

This study seeks to rehabilitate Eustorg de Beaulieu's (c. 1495-1552) Du cul (1537) in terms of the poem's satirically subversive nature. I choose the term "rehabilitate" in order to challenge certain aspects of Annette and Edward Tomarken's argument that the poem should be read more in terms of its commentary on the lyric genre of the blason than as a derisive indictment of social norms. I hold that on an implicit level, the poem does support the Tomarkens' contention that Beaulieu "push[es] to its ultimate limits the genre (i.e., the blason) with which he is working" (151). In the …

First impressions seem to suggest little more than a casual link between Othello and the film Les Enfants du Paradis despite multiple references to Shakespeare’s tragedy in Jacques Prévert’s screenplay. Many glaring differences present themselves with respect to both works. The Elizabethan drama appears to have little in common with a film made and released in France during the Occupation that focuses on a troupe of actors, a petty criminal, and an aristocrat in early nineteenth-century Paris. Yet, Prévert’s numerous appropriations of Shakespeare are crucial to the film’s meaning. Edward Baron Turk, who mentions the film’s allusions to Shakespeare, argues …

By the time Maria de Zayas published her Desengaños amorosos, the honor scenario, due in large part to the dominance of the comedia and especially of Calderón, had taken on a number of characteristics that today seem inseparable from the familiar plotlines. A noblewoman, usually innocent of adultery but loved by another man, is believed for one reason or another to have dishonored her husband. Le Change is a concept typically associated in the seventeenth century with the baroque, with the pastoral, and with comedy. In the simplest terms, a lover abandons the object of his or her affections for another. In baroque aesthetics, change is linked to the larger concepts of mobility and metamorphosis (Rousset 44). It is a common motif in the pastoral as well, both in drama and prose fiction. The classic pastoral figure of change is Hylas from Honoré d'Urfé's Astrée, who moves cavalierly from one mistress to the next. Invariably in seventeenth-century France, change is held to be a …

Gregor Wittkop, a name familiar to Hölderlin scholars following his 1993 publication of documents relating to Hölderlin‘s Tarmzeit (Hölderlin. Der Pflegsohn. Texte und Dokumente 1806—1843 mit den neu entdeckten Nürtinger Pflegschaftsakten), has combined archival research with literary interpretation to present in his newest study a nuanced view of Hölderlin‘s Nürtingen. The study consists of two parts: the first deals with Hölderlin‘s biography and his relationships with family members throughout his life, the second discusses a number of the poet‘s writings whose thematic center is «home» in both a biographical and idealized sense.
