Fostering Successful Communities Of Collaboration Through Educational Partnerships: Strengthening Bilingual Learners' Language And Literacy Achievement Along The Texas-Mexican Border, Isela Almaguer
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
There is an undisputable need to form collaborative partnerships between schools, families, homes, and communities across the nation. Collaborative educational partnerships are the cornerstone for student success. With increasingly diverse student populations, schools must communicate and collaborate with families and communities to bridge the wide gap that exists between home and school. With a dominant Spanish-speaking population of Mexican descent, as that of children living in the Southern tip of the Texas-Mexican border, known as The Rio Grande Valley, barriers such as low social economic status and limited English proficiency may impede much-needed communication between schools, homes, and communities. ‘Chismes De La Ciudad Letrada’: Nostalgia, Exilio Y La Construcción Del Canon Cubano En La Ensayística De Cabrera Infante, Ana B. Rodriguez Navas
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Importance Of Bilingual Lawyers In The American Legal System, Megan Dosouto
Modern Languages, Philosophy and Classics Theses
This research thesis project focuses on the benefits of legal professionals being bilingual and my support of utilizing bilingual legal professionals over language translators. This focuses on the communities they support, including their clients, other legal professionals, and all American citizens. There are analyses of language used in English-speaking and Spanish-speaking legal systems, as well as previous bilingual integration attempts. As a pre-law student that speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, I want to know how to advocate for myself as a future attorney and how to advocate for future clients who will need the assistance of a bilingual legal professional. …

“Where we are” in writing center research and as a disciplinary community is directly related to where we are as advocates for a just society and inclusive institutions more broadly: facing shit odds. This is because the work of writing centers can’t be separated from their political, economic, and cultural contexts, which Rachel Azima, Writing Center Director at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, crystalizes as a disciplinary obligation: “for those of us who work in U.S. writing centers, given our current political climate, it is imperative to put any commitments we have to social justice into action.” (74).
