American Sign Language Interpreting For D/Deaf Individuals With Disabilities: A Qualitative Study And Practical Guide, Emily Mason
American Sign Language Interpreting For D/Deaf Individuals With Disabilities: A Qualitative Study And Practical Guide, Emily Mason
Senior Honors Theses
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting for d/Deaf individuals with disabilities (DWD) is a complex task, and one which lacks an adequate research-base to inform best practices. Using the foundation of existing literature on closely related topics such as the field of ASL interpreting, educational interpreting, education of DWD individuals, and research about specific disabilities occurring with d/Deafness, I compiled a literature review and created a theoretical conceptual framework concerning this topic. In further investigation of this subject, I also conducted a qualitative study through online questionnaires sent out by email to ASL interpreters located through snowball sampling. The data collected …

Spanish Department Faculty Scholarship
Ethos In Early Chinese Rhetoric: The Case Of “Heaven”, Yong-Kang Wei
Ethos In Early Chinese Rhetoric: The Case Of “Heaven”, Yong-Kang Wei
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Though applicable in many Western historical-cultural settings, the Aristotelian model of ethos is not universal. As early Chinese rhetoric shows in the example of cheng-yan or “ethos of sincereness,” inspiring trust does not necessarily involve a process of character-based self-projection. In the Aristotelian model, the rhetor stands as a signifier of ethos, with an ideology of individualism privileged, whereas Chinese rhetoric assumes a collectivist model in which ethos belongs, not to an individual or a text, but rather to culture and cultural tradition. This essay will be concentrating on the concept of Heaven, central to the cultural and institutional systems …

Intercultural Communicative Competence And Spanish Heritage Language Speakers: An Overview From The U.S., Australia And Europe, Adriana Raquel Díaz, Laura Callahan
Intercultural Communicative Competence And Spanish Heritage Language Speakers: An Overview From The U.S., Australia And Europe, Adriana Raquel Díaz, Laura Callahan
Modern Languages & Literature
Research on ‘heritage/community language education’ (HCLE) has a relatively recent trajectory, but it has generated a large number of scholarly publications, particularly in relation to Spanish in the United States (U.S.) where the growth of Spanish heritage language learners (HLL) has been exponential. However, to date, limited research attention has been given to the intersection between heritage language learning and the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This may be attributed to the assumption that, on a daily basis, such learners are required to move and effectively operate between languages and cultures and, therefore, already possess adequate levels of ICC. …

Uncommonly Common: Reconsidering Creativity And Beauty In Technical Communication, Kathleen S. Hardesty, Andrew Hollinger
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Purpose: In this article, we (re)consider the moments of creativity and beauty in the work of technical communication and how those moments can be better incorporated into, emphasized, explored, and engaged with in classroom instruction or other training.
Method: We performed a literature review of texts published in the last 25 years, identified by searching for the keywords "creativity" and "beauty" in technical communication journals, to understand how these concepts have been theorized and included in the field recently. We then extended this prior literature to consider how beauty and creativity might be incorporated into technical communication teaching/training. The …

Aatj’S Role In Diversity And Inclusion: An Opportunity To Transform Into A Well-Integrated Organization, Suwako Watanabe
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
According to the survey results, 57% of the survey respondents said no to the question, “Is the Japanese language educator community in North America diverse one?” (Mori, Hasegawa, Park, and Suzuki, this volume). This result suggests that the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) as a professional organization needs to improve diversity within the field. What is a more important question is whether or not our organization and its membership as a whole embrace the value of diversity and put it into practice in every aspect of their profession on a daily basis. The survey results make it clear …

(Dis)Similarity And Identity: On Becoming Quasi-Wpa, Andrew Hollinger, Jessie Borgman
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article examines WPA positions that are non-tenured, part-time or otherwise under-supported. Drawing on previous discussions of this precariously-situated WPA position, the authors introduce the term “quasi-WPA” and explore how WPAs in this position face three critical issues in their position as administrator: (1) authority and power dynamics, (2) identity, and (3) resources. Due to the dynamics these WPA positions come with, the authors argue that these critical issues are magnified for quasi-WPAs. The authors investigate how the quasi-WPA position is made problematic by their positionality. They are holding a position of responsibility while also occupying a position of uncertainty. …

Improving teaching practices in higher education requires an understanding of the impact of pedagogical innovations in student learning through the analysis of the theoretical implications and the articulation of creativity, motivation and learning. This article describes a pedagogical experience that integrates the use of Photovoice, a strategy originally designed to combine photography with digital narration and social participation. This experience was implemented in an online master's course for educators at a southern university in the United States. The use of Photovoice allowed students to explore issues of equity, social justice and education through digital images as the mediating element to …

Reflective Teaching Practices Between Theory And Reality In A Demanding Society, Khalid Aada
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Being a teacher implies enjoying the stages that students have to go through in order to learn; provide an environment conducive to learning; have an academic preparation to be successful. At various points in this process, unlearning is needed to relearn and make sense of a new experience. Being a teacher means recognizing that teaching is a transformative process for both students and teachers. The teaching activity can be defined as the set of actions, carried out inside and outside the classroom, aimed to promoting student learning in relation to the objectives and competencies designed in a planning and a …

Refugees And Human Rights In French-Speaking Europe, Jacob Kang
Modern Languages Presentations
This paper seeks to explain the manner in which French-speaking European States, namely France, Switzerland, and Belgium, treat asylum seekers. To do so, we will first examine the philosophical underpinnings of European conceptions of the state, of personhood, and of human rights. In doing so, we move to understand cultural attitudes towards asylum seekers through European philosophers such as Rousseau and Kant. The second aspect, the legal aspect, will explain the manner through which the aforementioned philosophies are reflected through governance in each of the states. Finally, we will examine the demographic profiles of the refugees and perform an outcomes …
Calling For Peace, Preparing For War: The Revolutionary Voice Of Saint Genevieve During The Fronde, Carrie F. Klaus
Calling For Peace, Preparing For War: The Revolutionary Voice Of Saint Genevieve During The Fronde, Carrie F. Klaus
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Propagandists on both sides of the French civil wars known as the Fronde drew upon religious symbols and traditions to rally their readers to condemn or support the rebellion against Queen Anne d’Autriche, regent for young King Louis XIV, and her chief minister Cardinal Jules Mazarin. The cult of the saints remained strong during the Fronde. After a spectacular procession of the relics of Saint Genevieve, patron saint of Paris, failed to bring peace to the kingdom in June 1652, multiple writers gave voice to this legendary figure. This essay examines four Mazarinades (the political pamphlets of the Fronde) in …

The Story Of A Shipwrecked Slave: The Role Of Esteban De Dorantes As An Interpreter In The Early Exploration And Conquest Of The Americas, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
English: When the Spanish launched the exploration and conquest of the Americas, they enlisted a host of interpreters for the task of Empire. These interpreters came from varying backgrounds, but the two most common profiles seem to be that of Indigenous or Mestizo individuals, on the one side, and Europeans who learned the languages of the conquered on the other. A less well—known, less researched group included people of African ancestry. This paper seeks to inquire into the latter type of interpreter by presenting a historical case study of Esteban de Dorantes, an African slave who became an interpreter. The …

Our study endeavors to explore how culturally relevant care manifests in our teaching at a predominantly Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Through duoethnography and collaborative interpretation of narrative data from our former students, we seek to better understand our own and our students’ learning experiences. Collecting our own and our students’ perspectives and stories about lived experiences with us as professors in narrative form allows for us and our respondents to reflect and express freely--to share views, impressions, interpretations, and experiences in our/their own words. Analysis of narrative reflections provides an opportunity to craft a story, to give voice to those living …

The disrupting visual and literary languages of the turn of the 19th century to the 1930’s constitute an area of research as a moment of crystallization of the Cuban national consciousness or identity. Writers and artists in Hispanic Caribbean region had to face the challenge of finding ways to include highly racialized elements (such as religion and popular culture) within the rhetorical space of the elites, in other words, what Angel Rama has labeled the "Republic of letters". The result of these efforts not only opened a new kind of negotiation of the idea of nation, but also meant …

Lexical Complexities In The St. Louis Dialect Island, Larry Lafond, Kenneth Moffett
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The Greater St. Louis “dialect island” poses interesting problems for dialect documentation, partly because Greater St. Louis is a transitional area where many overlapping linguistic influences have left their mark, and also because is an area with new immigrant communities, racial divides, and an aging population.Using a sample from survey and interview data from 815 participants over a seven-year period, we examine lexical diversity in Greater St. Louis, comprising counties both in Missouri and Illinois. We discover that both age and place are robust indicators of lexical selection in Southern Illinois and St. Louis. Our findings provide a concurring rationale …

Both the book and the lessons presented center on historical and contemporary issues surrounding school segregation, desegregation, and resegregation. Thus, the lessons presented in this chapter are also appropriate for the social studies classroom and may be used to address curriculum standards set forth by the National Council for the Social Studies. Through its use of both explicit and implicit questioning, the QuestionAnswer Relationships strategy can be …
