Pre-Imposition Vs. In Situ Negotiation Of Group And Individual Identities: Spanish And English In Us Service Encounters, Laura Callahan
Pre-Imposition Vs. In Situ Negotiation Of Group And Individual Identities: Spanish And English In Us Service Encounters, Laura Callahan
Modern Languages & Literature
This paper examines the supposed opposition between essentialist or positivist approaches to identity—which categorize group and individual members by a priori properties of sex, race, ethnicity, and native speakerhood—and constructionism, which views such properties as relational and negotiable. Even when categories such as sex, race, ethnicity, and native speakerhood are considered to have been imposed a priori, there nonetheless persists a general recognition that these are at least to some extent social constructs—if not the categories themselves, the ideas we have about them. Using data from previous empirical work in Spanish and English code-choice in US service encounters, this paper …

Review Of: Japanese And Continental Philosophy: Conversations With The Kyoto School, Michiko Yusa
Review Of: Japanese And Continental Philosophy: Conversations With The Kyoto School, Michiko Yusa
Modern & Classical Languages
The aim of this anthology of seventeen essays, clearly set forth by the editors’ introduction, is “to promote dialogue between Western and Eastern philosophy, and more specifically between Continental philosophy and the Kyoto School” (p. 1). This venture is guided by the conviction that philosophy is ultimately “a quest for liberating wisdom” and not just an academic exercise (p. 15). This book comes as a timely response to today’s globalized environment, which is fast becoming one-dimensional, flat, and uniform, and in which human beings are unwittingly reduced to mere “numbers” for the profit of faceless corporations.

"Oh, Those Loud Black Girls!": A Phenomenological Study Of Black Girls Talking With An Attitude, Jacqueline B. Koonce
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Current research suggests that it is imperative for researchers and educators to pay more attention to the needs of African American adolescent girls and how their race and gender affect schooling (Fordham, 1993; Morris, 2007). The purpose of this study was to highlight the lived experiences of two African American adolescent girls when they used the African American women's speech practice, "Talking with an Attitude" (TWA), with their teachers. Using phenomenology and Afrocentric feminist epistemology as methodological and theoretical approaches, interviews were used to collect and analyze data that revealed the nature of their lived experiences. Van Manen's description of …

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein
Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Sexual desire is ubiquitous in all theater. It follows that virtually all theatrical traditions struggle with the issue of the representation of that desire onstage. The French stage of the 1630s and Jean Rotrou's theater of that period in particular constitute an unusual moment of relative freedom before the imposition of the bienséances banished sexual activity from the stage. What I propose is a theatrical reading of sex in Rotrou's plays, a tripartite examination of dramatic strategy: how Rotrou foregrounds the scandalous by direct depiction of sexuality onstage; how at other moments he moves to attenuate its prurient force by …
Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan
Essay Writing Instructional Lexicon And Semantic Confusion, Amir Kalan
English Faculty Publications
“Introduction,” “body,” and “conclusion” are the most accessible words in the instructional lexicon for ESL writing teachers when they want to describe the structure of a typical five-paragraph persuasive or argumentative essay or its shorter variations for standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. They are frequently employed to refer to the three tiers of the hamburger essay in textbooks, on classroom boards, and in YouTube tutorials.
Not surprisingly, English learners also might give you the same words if asked what the main components of an essay are. Like ESL teachers, students usually use the same terms or their equivalents …

"Listen And Click": Enhancing Listening Comprehension Skills In The Language Classroom Through The Use Of Clickers, Valerie Hascoet

The following article relates to an experiment with a group of second year students learning an applied language as a minor subject of their degree. Personal Response Devices were introduced to improve the students’ listening skills by creating more engagement with the course material. It led to 100% participation in class activities run through clickers, facilitated the students in self-evaluating their performance at the tasks and was fun, despite some technical issues occasionally. The experiment fell short however on the reflective aspect. Students were either incapable of or unwilling to reflect on the questions they found difficult. The lecturer was …
Review Of: Women In The Prose Of María De Zayas, Joan M. Hoffman
Review Of: Women In The Prose Of María De Zayas, Joan M. Hoffman
Modern & Classical Languages
With Women in the Prose of Maria de Zayas, Eavan O'Brien presents a remarkable, exception ally well-researched addition to the ever-increasing Maria de Zayas library, albeit with what is, in my estimation, an unfortunate and inexpressive title. O'Brien wholly succeeds in her stated intention to study "the complex ramifications of women's interaction in [Zayas's] prose" (5). Without a doubt, this study does represent "a new contribution to the study of Zayas's prose, unearthing a neglected and innovative aspect, its gynocentrism" (6). Using a very close reading of all twenty tales in Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and Desenganos amorosos, supported by …

Review Of Building Nineteenth-Century Latin America: Re-Rooted Cultures, Identities, And Nations, Lee Joan Skinner

Recent years have seen the publication of several excellent collections of essays devoted to nineteenth-century Latin American cultural studies. Works such as Beyond Imagined Communities: Reading and Writing the Nation in Nineteenth-Century Latin America, edited by Sara Castro-Klarén and John Charles Chasteen, and special numbers of journals such as Revista Iberoamericana’s issue on cultural change and periodical reading in nineteenth-century Latin America (January–March 2006), to adduce but two examples, have amplified our understanding of the complex ways in which hegemonic and nonhegemonic discourses functioned in the nineteenth century and how the divisions between elite and popular cultures were …

Der Zauber Der Musik: E.T.A. Hoffmann Und Das Erleben Des Sublimen, Katelin M. Richter
Lawrence University Honors Projects

Foreign language acquisition is a subject of increasing importance in today’s world, acting as the backbone of international relations, trade and communication. In addition, through examination of a foreign culture and language, individuals can come to appreciate philosophies and values other than those pertaining to their own society. However, the difficulty and apparent uselessness of the subject material in the “here and now” dissuades many students from continuing language acquisition after obligatory general education requirements have been fulfilled. Through examining acquisition theories and factors which affect students’ motivation to continue second language acquisition; I developed a strategy in order to …

Queer Neo-Mexicanism: Negotiating Mexican And Gay Identities In The Art Of Nahum B. Zenil And Julio Galán, Nicholas Derda
Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The Mexican artists Nahum B. Zenil and Julio Galán have become the poster children for being gay and Mexican in contemporary art criticism. Critics have drawn comparisons between Zenil and Galán because of their thematic treatment of gay sexuality and Mexican nationalism. These comparisons, however, have often assumed that Zenil and Galán are representing a monolithic gay sexuality that is unaffected by their social class, their relationships to nationalism and Catholicism, and their views on the role of art in social activism. This paper aims to analyze specifically how Zenil and Galán represent two distinct gay identities, all the while …

Lope de Vega’s El robo de Dina, based upon Genesis 31-34, focuses on the disturbing series of events involving Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, and culminating in the mass slaughter of an entire enemy people who were doing their best to accommodate the demands of the Hebrews. The primary focus of this article is not the Biblical story itself, but rather the techniques that Lope used to adapt his source text for a comedia audience. From the amplification of the scope of the source text by the inclusion of the story of Laban and Jacob to the depiction of women as …

Beauvoir For The Masses: Exploring Applications Of Her Philosophy In French Social Revolutions Of The 1960’S, Reille Acks
Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
My project examines the feminism and existentialism of Simone de Beauvoir as they intersect with the ideas of the French social movements of the1960’s, using the movement of May '68 as a primary example. Beauvoir's ideas were politically in tune with the leftist philosophy of the students and workers who organized widespread demonstrations throughout the spring of 1968 and brought the French economy to a standstill in May of that year. But I argue that her existentialist philosophy, foregrounding the necessity of each individual to create a self and to reject accepted social paradigms, reflects the demands made by the …

The Sounds Of Spanglish, Ilan Stavans
IMSA Great Minds Program ®
With the dramatic demographic growth of Latinos in the United States, a new form of communication has come to the fore: Spanglish, a hybrid tongue using elements from English and Spanish, yet having its own identity. Millions of people use it every day to speak as well as to read and write. Outside the country, in Latin America and the Caribbean, Spanglish is also a presence. But it is in this country where its effects are more palpable. Politicians, business big and small, religious organizations, and particularly the media employ it on a regular basis. What does the emergence of …
