Review Of Mannerism And Baroque In Seventeenth-Century French Poetry: The Example Of Tristan L’Hermite, By James C. Shepard, Russell J. Ganim Dec 2003

Review Of Mannerism And Baroque In Seventeenth-Century French Poetry: The Example Of Tristan L’Hermite, By James C. Shepard, Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

Interest in Tristan L’Hermite has not only been sustained, but has grown considerably since 1955, when Amédée Carriat published Tristan ou L’Eloge d’un poète and his Bibliographie des oeuvres de Tristan L’Hermite. Carriat’s work on the Cahiers Tristan L’Hermite, as well as the scholarship of Claude Abraham, Catherine Grisé, and Jean-Pierre Chauveau among others, has laid the groundwork for a number of new inquiries into Tristan’s oeuvre. Colloquia on Tristan have been organized in France and the U.S. in recent years, and the Tristan “revival” reached an apex of sorts in 1999 with Champion’s publication of his Oeuvres complètes …

Métissage Et Fables De La Reconstruction Dans Les Textes Sur Le Génocide Rwandais, Marie-Chantal Kalisa Nov 2003

Métissage Et Fables De La Reconstruction Dans Les Textes Sur Le Génocide Rwandais, Marie-Chantal Kalisa

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Conferences, Seminars, and Colloquia

Authenticity, Authoriality, And The Nature Of Electronic Texts: Don Quijote In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Matthew D. Stroud Oct 2003

Authenticity, Authoriality, And The Nature Of Electronic Texts: Don Quijote In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

In "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," Walter Benjamin provided thought-provoking insights into the way that lithography, photography, and cinema changed the nature of art and our perceptions of it. Among other considerations, he noted that the efficient mass reproduction of works of art affected notions of authenticity, the author, and the response of the viewer or reader. In many ways, the advent of the Internet causes us to review his arguments and expand on them in light of this new, digitized, decentralized, and diffuse method of reproducing works of art, including literature. Among the first …

Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Sep 2003

Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Lessing's Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts (EdM) first appeared, albeit in incomplete form, appended to the fourth of Lessing's Gegensätze zu Reimarus in 1777. It constitutes part of Lessing's response to the rationalistic polemic Lessing's "Ungenannter," Hermann Samuel Reimarus, directed against many of the fundamental dogmas of orthodox Christianity, and seeks to define a position which preserves the authority of reason, while at the same time defining a legitimate historical role for revealed religion. I wish to investigate here the hermeneutical model Lessing puts forward in the EdM in the context of his response to Reimarus. We will see that while Lessing …

Freedom Of Conscience In John H. Newman And Miguel De Unamuno, Kevin T. Fagan Aug 2003

Freedom Of Conscience In John H. Newman And Miguel De Unamuno, Kevin T. Fagan

World Languages and Cultures

Deals with the issue of freedom of conscience in two of its principal advocates in the modem English and Spanish-speaking worlds, John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno. Seemingly strange bedfellows, in their respective linguistic communities Newman is considered an intellectual defender of institutional Christianity, while Unamuno is oft characterized as its greatest heretic. This dissertation is a comparative study of both writers from a historical-critical perspective. Our aim is to suggest that the heroic defenses of conscience by both Newman and Unamuno towards the end of their lives are a logical corollary to a succession of actions and writings …

Avatares Del Proceso De La Institucionalización De La Literatura En Chile En Las Revistas Literarias Del Siglo Xix, J. Agustín Pastén B. Jul 2003

Avatares Del Proceso De La Institucionalización De La Literatura En Chile En Las Revistas Literarias Del Siglo Xix, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Emergency Room Mode--A Service-Learning Case, Lee F. Wilberschied, Lisa Bauer, Carla Gerdes Jul 2003

Emergency Room Mode--A Service-Learning Case, Lee F. Wilberschied, Lisa Bauer, Carla Gerdes

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

This study examines the outcomes of a two-part service learning project in a summer practicum for English as Second Language (ESL) teacher endorsement candidates. First, 10 mainstream K12 teachers with 2 to 30 years' experience needed practice teaching students with linguistic and cultural differences. Their own service learning was to implement a summer family literacy program for ESL students. Second, these teachers had planned a service learning component for the ESL students. Teachers, feeling obliged to correct all the perceived linguistic deficits in students, went into a panic that they described as "emergency room mode." Regarding service learning and any …

L’Excitation Insolite : La Perversité Amoureuse Chez Tristan, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2003

L’Excitation Insolite : La Perversité Amoureuse Chez Tristan, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

Review Of: Circum-Baltic Languages Vol. 1: Past And Present, And Circum-Baltic Languages Vol. 2: Grammar And Typology, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2003

Review Of: Circum-Baltic Languages Vol. 1: Past And Present, And Circum-Baltic Languages Vol. 2: Grammar And Typology, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

These twin volumes grew out of a six-year research program entitled 'Language typology around the Baltic Sea', sponsored by the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University and directed by one of the editors (Maria Koptjevskaja-Tamm). They seek to unite the broad sweep characteristic of typological inquiries with the finer-grained detail typical of language contact studies. While K-T concedes that Circum-Baltic (CB) languages are not a true Sprachbund, she emphasizes that the contact situation in northeastern Europe has never been assessed holistically because the languages spoken there have traditionally been the domain of separate disciplines founded on genetic lines. Many facets …

Review Of: The Phonology Of Standard Chinese, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2003

Review Of: The Phonology Of Standard Chinese, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

San Duanmu's eclectic, clearly written approach to the sound pattern of Standard Chinese (or putonghua, China's official lingua franca used by hundreds of millions) could easily serve as an undergraduate text, yet his presentation is rich in theoretical proposals. Explanations are based on a variety of perspectives, from traditional views of the phoneme to feature geometry and optimality theory (OT), each concisely introduced so that the discussion is easy to follow, even for the novice. The result is a flowing, integrated approach that addresses-and solves-some of the thorniest perennial problems in Chinese phonology.

Review Of: Evidentials: Turkic, Iranian And Neighbouring Languages, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2003

Review Of: Evidentials: Turkic, Iranian And Neighbouring Languages, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This collection represents an important contribution to the study of evidentials. It contains many descriptive advances and showcases the plurality of current views on evidentiality-something apparent even in the diverse terminology used by the individual contributors. Most important, the volume proposes new topics for future investigation, thereby offering much of real value to typologists, language contact specialists, and anyone interested in processes of grammatical change

Review Of: Non-Canonical Marking Of Subjects And Objects, Edward J. Vajda Jun 2003

Review Of: Non-Canonical Marking Of Subjects And Objects, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This crosslinguistic study of patterns formed by exceptions to general typological rules governing the verb-external valence marking of grammatical terms investigates diverse languages-some familiar, others barely described in the literature at all. The results should be of interest to linguists of all theoretical persuasions as they impinge on our understanding of a core area of grammar.

Intercourse As Discourse: The Calculus Of Objectification And Desire In The Novel And Film Versions Of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Russell J. Ganim Mar 2003

Intercourse As Discourse: The Calculus Of Objectification And Desire In The Novel And Film Versions Of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

The calculus of objectifi cation and desire in both the novel and film versions of Choderlos de Laclos’s Liaisons dangereuses is derived in two principal ways. The first derivation, that of the Sadean will to objectify the other for erotic and intellectual satisfaction, precedes the second, that of the overarching wish to produce a written object announcing the conquest of the human object. Limited by the medium, the film adaptations of the Liaisons dangereuses cannot place as great an emphasis on the composition of letters. Nevertheless, they make allusions to it in such a manner that underscores this type of …

Review Of: An Introduction To Syntax, Edward J. Vajda Mar 2003

Review Of: An Introduction To Syntax, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

Written by a scholar known for his innovative analyses of genetically and typologically varied languages, this comprehensive introduction will not disappoint the student or teacher yearning for a more diverse sampling of languages. At the same time, the discussion is attentive to various competing syntactic formalisms and offers a firm grounding in contemporary linguistic theory along with exposure to a wide range of typological variation. Engaging and logical from beginning to end, it opens with the practical, yet intriguing question, 'How does an Aborigine from central Australia, a Basque from Spain or an inhabitant of the island of Madagascar put …

Review Of: Inflectional Morphology: A Theory Of Paradigm Structure, Edward J. Vajda Mar 2003

Review Of: Inflectional Morphology: A Theory Of Paradigm Structure, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

Although the presence or absence of inflection in a language has been a cornerstone of typology since before Wilhelm von Humboldt, a consensus regarding inflectional morphology as a distinct component of linguistic structure has yet to emerge. This book is an attempt to formalize what can be deduced about inflectional paradigms based on a rigorous inspection of the data. Gregory Stump calls his approach paradigm function morphology (PFM), describing it as an 'inferential-realizational' theory that regards 'the paradigm and not merely the word' (28) as the primary focus of analysis with respect to inflectional morphology. The book develops the idea …

Les Abbesses Et La Parole Au Dix-Septième Siècle: Les Discours Monastiques À La Lumière Des Interdictions Pauliniennes, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 2003

Les Abbesses Et La Parole Au Dix-Septième Siècle: Les Discours Monastiques À La Lumière Des Interdictions Pauliniennes, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

One tends to take for granted that in women’s monasteries the only voices raised were those of its masculine directors and preachers. However, while sermons by priests were generally reserved for Sundays and feast days, the abbesses addressed their communities several times a week or even daily. Although the Pauline prohibitions restricted women from speaking on religious topics in public or to mixed groups, within the walls of the convent that was assimilated to the private domain of a household, abbesses exhorted, instructed and rebuked their nuns at chapter meetings or during recreation sessions. Many such talks might have been …

The Realist Novel, Harriet Stevens Turner Jan 2003

The Realist Novel, Harriet Stevens Turner

Spanish Language and Literature

When we think of realism in fiction, we think first of mimesis—the imitation of life—a concept that at once implies the existence of something outside the writer’s own mind which he or she is trying to imitate. The imitation of this supposedly external “thing” undergirds the term “realism,” whether applied to painting, philosophy, literature, or film. As Harry Levin reminds us, “Etymologically, realism is thing-ism. The adjective ‘real’ derives from the Latin res [meaning ‘thing’] and finds an appropriate context in ‘real estate’”—land, property, things. The realist novel in Spain places a special emphasis on this primary engagement with the …

Review Of: Slovene: A Comprehensive Grammar, Edward J. Vajda Jan 2003

Review Of: Slovene: A Comprehensive Grammar, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This book lives up to its subtitle of 'comprehensive' in several ways. It provides a thorough, up-to-date introduction to Slovene grammatical structure. It also deals with all facets of the written standard in a straightforward fashion that pays careful attention to the differences between written and spoken Slovene. The sections dealing with phonology and orthography (5-26) are particularly useful as a prelude to the longer grammatical descriptions that follow. There are also sections on word order (333-44) and a general treatment of word formation (345-62), in addition to separate sections on all major and minor parts of speech; no significant …

Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney Jan 2003

Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In the 1990s Luis Goytisolo explores the possibilities of popular fiction, adapting various genres (travel, mystery, erotic, historical) to accomodate his long-term project of unpacking Western Values. Indeed, Goytisolo’s flirtation with the best-selling genre fiction constitutes a postmodern gesture of “complicitous critique.”For example, in Escalera hacia el cielo (1999) Goytisolo exploits the erotic genre to challenge the traditional paradigm of the dominant male gaze and the objectified female body and to offer instead expressions of mutuality. In Mzungo (1996), Goytisolo engages the travel novel to undermine the culturally dominant position of the white European male who “discovers” an unknown culture/geography …

Gender And The Gaze: Sor Juana, Lacan, And Spanish Baroque Poetry, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2003

Gender And The Gaze: Sor Juana, Lacan, And Spanish Baroque Poetry, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

There are few motifs more ubiquitous in Renaissance and Baroque poetry than those that link falling in love to the eyes. Based at least in part on Theophrastus, as Halstead has pointed out (113-20), this notion of love describes a process by which one is captivated by looking at the object of desire, prompting an exchange of humors or spirits. If the love is returned, both lovers feel complete and satisfied, but if the object of desire does not reciprocate, one feels empty because one has given one’s soul to another while receiving nothing in return.

Pompée's Absence In Corneille's 'La Mort De Pompée', Nina Ekstein Jan 2003

Pompée's Absence In Corneille's 'La Mort De Pompée', Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Corneille's La Mort de Pompée (1643) occupies a curious position in the playwright's oeuvre, coming as it does immediately after the tetralogy. Faced with the never-ending artistic challenge of what to do next, what features to keep from earlier works, how to innovate and thereby captivate his audience, how to outdo his latest success, Corneille made some daring choices in this play. Indeed, this play is commonly viewed as a significant point in Corneille's oeuvre, one at which the playwright moves off in a radically new direction. It is my contention that the basic choice to keep Pompée …

Knowing Irony: The Problem Of Corneille, Nina Ekstein Jan 2003

Knowing Irony: The Problem Of Corneille, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Irony and knowledge exist in a problematic relationship to each other, one that is strikingly similar to that between knowledge and secrets. If irony becomes unambiguously obvious, that is, known to all, it is no longer perceived as irony. And a secret is not a secret if it is widely known. By the same token, someone must perceive irony in order for it to exist, just as a secret must be known by someone. Thus the question of whether a given author is ironic is unlikely to have a clear, unambiguous answer. The probable lack of final clarity does not …

Mexican Elites And Language Policy In Tucson’S First Schools, Elise M. Dubord Jan 2003

Mexican Elites And Language Policy In Tucson’S First Schools, Elise M. Dubord

Faculty Publications

Educational institutions developed in Tucson, Arizona in the last quarter of the 19th Century during a critical time in cultural and political shifts of power between Anglo and Mexican elites in Southern Arizona. This paper examines unofficial language policies in both public and parochial schools in Tucson that reflect the accommodation of power between the two groups. The data used to reconstruct these de facto language policies comes from school documents, newspaper articles and advertisements, memoirs of teachers, politicians and others as well as historical accounts of the formation of Tucson’s first schools. Tollefson (1991) suggests that “language policy is …
