Teaching Hispanic Culture, Diversity, And Tolerance Through Hispanic Dances And Music: Two Approaches For Flamenco & Caribbean Dances, Chita Espino-Bravo Ph.D., D. Nicole English

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

A Sociology Approach: Dance can be a useful tool for teaching students about culture and community. Through the language of Dance and Music (Caribbean Dance), context is given to social facts, which engages and informs students about such social issues as history, Colonialism, social class, gender, race/ethnicity, and social justice. The added bonus of using Dance as a lens is that it involves active, embodied learning (Dewey, English, Mead), making the material more memorable, meaningful, and relevant to the learner. A Communicative Approach (Task-based Learning Activity) & Language for Specific Purposes:Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is a derivative of the Communicative Approach …

José Emilio Pacheco En El Imaginario De La Poesía Mexicana Reciente: Ética De Escritura Y Política De Lectura, Ignacio Ruiz-Perez Jan 2018

José Emilio Pacheco En El Imaginario De La Poesía Mexicana Reciente: Ética De Escritura Y Política De Lectura, Ignacio Ruiz-Perez

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

In this paper I explore eroticism as a key element in the evolution from modernismo to posmodernismo. If eroticism is a crucial component to understand the binary concept of the world and the universe present in modernist poetry, postmodernist poets distance themselves from this outlook towards a “critic system”. In order to explore this shift, I analyze the works of postmodernist poets such as Baldomero Fernández Moreno, Ramón López Velarde and Regino E. Boti, and vanguardist poet Nicanor Parra, comparing their writing to Rubén Darío’s. I emphasize the evolution from Darío’s conception of the universe where women play an integral …

Vanguardia, Raza Y Nación: Una Lectura De La Negritud De La Novela Mexicana Panchito Chapopote Y Del Estridentismo A La Luz Del Modernismo Brasileño Y De Macunaíma, Roberto Irizarry

Xavier Icaza's Panchito Chapopote contains a rare portrayal of Mexican negritude. This novel rescues an identity marginalized by the emphasis on blending European and indigenous cultures in Mexico's official discourse. This representation is also distinguished by its distancing from both Afro-Mexican exoticism and Mexican nationalism. The article sheds light on this defamiliarized portrayal of Mexican Blackness by comparing it with Mário de Andrade's Macunaíma and Brazilian modernist works in general.

Duality And The Problem Of Moral Self-Awareness In Dostoevsky's Dvoinik (The Double), Lonny Harrison Jan 2008

Duality And The Problem Of Moral Self-Awareness In Dostoevsky's Dvoinik (The Double), Lonny Harrison

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

This dissertation investigates the problem of duality as it relates to the moral situation of the protagonist of F. M. Dostoevsky's novella Dvoinik (The Double, 1846). Bearing the cultural and literary heritage as well as contemporary social realities of mid-nineteenth century Russia steadily in mind, I analyse the duality motif in Dvoinik in terms of the protagonist's self-consciousness [samosoznanie] and moral perceptions. In particular, the moral ideas that underpin his self-definitions are products of what I refer to as moral selfawareness. In the course of my analysis, I interrogate the modulations of moral reasoning in the mind of the protagonist …
