Zur Klärung Des Verhältnisses Zwischen Hölderlin Und Elise Lebret: Einträge Der Geschwister Lebret In Heinrike Breunlins Stammbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Elise Lebret Und Friedrich Hölderlin, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 2008

Elise Lebret Und Friedrich Hölderlin, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Zwischen Himmel Und Erde: Der Junge Friedrich Hölderlin Und Der Württembergische Pietismus, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Der Gelenkte Streit Als Didaktisches Mittel In Der Deutschen Kinderliteratur, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

‘Der Mensch Prüfe Sich Selbst ...’: Eine Predigt Nathanaël Köstlins Als Kontext Für Hölderlins Ersten Erhaltenen Brief, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Well-Structured Texts Help Second-Year German Students Learn To Narrate, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The past twenty years have seen a significant paradigm shift in foreign language pedagogy from measuring language achievement (based on a defined and finite curriculum, such as a textbook chapter or a grammar lesson) to measuring proficiency (general competence in the foreign language independent of a defined curriculum). Building on the work done previously in language testing by government language schools, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (1986) sought to reach consensus about describing and measuring language abilities. These Guidelines give generalized descriptions of abilities at four levels of proficiency (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior). With the widespread recognition of these Guidelines have …

Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Lessing's Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts (EdM) first appeared, albeit in incomplete form, appended to the fourth of Lessing's Gegensätze zu Reimarus in 1777. It constitutes part of Lessing's response to the rationalistic polemic Lessing's "Ungenannter," Hermann Samuel Reimarus, directed against many of the fundamental dogmas of orthodox Christianity, and seeks to define a position which preserves the authority of reason, while at the same time defining a legitimate historical role for revealed religion. I wish to investigate here the hermeneutical model Lessing puts forward in the EdM in the context of his response to Reimarus. We will see that while Lessing …

Review Of Das Straßburger Eulenspiegelbuch: Studien Zu Entstehungs-Geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen Der Ältesten Drucküberlieferung, By Jürgen Schulz-Grobert, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Schulz-Grobert argues that scholars' pursuit of a phantom Low German original, and their "fixation" on Herman Bote as its author, have directed scholarly attention away from the role the editors in Strassburg played in its production. While TE scholarship to date is in agreement that a Strassburg editor had a hand in the final version of the book, Schulz-Grobert argues that the circle of humanists and literati associated with Grüninger's press in Strassburg were alone responsible for producing the book. There is no need to assume the existence of a Low German original, he states, nor does the "ERMAN B" acrostic, …

Review Of Gregor Wittkop: Hölderlins Nürtingen: Lebenswelt Und Literarischer Entwurf, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 2001

Review Of Gregor Wittkop: Hölderlins Nürtingen: Lebenswelt Und Literarischer Entwurf, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Gregor Wittkop, a name familiar to Hölderlin scholars following his 1993 publication of documents relating to Hölderlin‘s Tarmzeit (Hölderlin. Der Pflegsohn. Texte und Dokumente 1806—1843 mit den neu entdeckten Nürtinger Pflegschaftsakten), has combined archival research with literary interpretation to present in his newest study a nuanced view of Hölderlin‘s Nürtingen. The study consists of two parts: the first deals with Hölderlin‘s biography and his relationships with family members throughout his life, the second discusses a number of the poet‘s writings whose thematic center is «home» in both a biographical and idealized sense. Wittkop‘s familiarity with the social and legal …

Johannes R. Becher 1891–1958, Robert K. Shirer Sep 2000

Johannes R. Becher 1891–1958, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Throughout much of the 20th century, the name of Johannes R. Becher elicited strong reactions: he was a gifted Expressionist poet or a dangerous but largely incoherent pacifist; he was a tool of Moscow willing to betray the Weimar Republic or an example of an artist who transcended his class and served the proletariat; he was a degenerate enemy of the Third Reich or a hero of the Volkfront; his was a strong voice for the survival of German culture in the dark years or the timid voice of a survivor of Stalin's blood purges; he was a heroic pioneer …

Review Of Eva Kocziszky, Mythenfiguren In Hölderlins Spätwerk, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Sep 2000

Review Of Eva Kocziszky, Mythenfiguren In Hölderlins Spätwerk, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Kocziszky attempts to explicate the function of the Greek myths in Hölderlin’s late writings, primarily the annotations to his translations of Sophocles’s Oedipus and Antigone. She interprets these myths broadly, and in her discussions explores the figures of the centaur (here her textual basis is “Das Belebende,” Hölderlin’s translation and commentary of one of the Pindaric fragments), Oedipus, Antigone, Danae, and the “Muse,” Greece itself, as tragic figures whose significance emerges as one considers their relationship to the poetological, historical, political, and also profoundly personal concerns expressed in Hölderlin’s work. Following Jean LaPlanche’s observation that poetry and disease share a …

The Masquerade Of History: Herman Bote’S Schichtboik, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Dec 1993

The Masquerade Of History: Herman Bote’S Schichtboik, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

In medieval city chronicles of northern Germany we find an inter esting instance of polysemy in the word “schicht,” which is used to mean both “history” and “uprising”. Th is semantic overlap suggests a strong association in the contemporary imagination between the processes of historical change and the manifestation of disorder. This association is reflected in the practice of city chronicle writing in the medieval and late medieval period, which frequently was undertaken in the aftermath of an uprising. The chronicle documented the legitimacy of the restored order, and served the specific purpose of perpetuating the city’s present legal status, …

Review Of Zwischen Revolution Und Orthodoxie? Schelling Und Seine Freunde Im Stift Und An Der Universität Tübingen: Texte Und Untersuchungen. By Wilhelm G. Jacobs, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

This volume makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the education Schelling and his contemporaries received at the Tübingen Stift in the last decades of the eighteenth century. The book consists of three parts: first Jacobs's discussion of the academic setting of the Stift, and then two sections of previously unpublished texts-a selection of eight Specimina (masters' essays) written between 1785 and 1795 by some of the lesser lights at the St$, followed by a list of the titles of all dissertations and Speciminawritten at the Stift during the same time period. While earlier studies have pointed …

Review Of Virtue And The Veil Of Illusion: Generic Innovation And The Pedagogical Project In Eighteenth-Century Literature By Dorothea Von Mücke, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Dec 1992

Review Of Virtue And The Veil Of Illusion: Generic Innovation And The Pedagogical Project In Eighteenth-Century Literature By Dorothea Von Mücke, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

This original and wide-ranging comparative study examines how emergent literary genres in eighteenth-century Europe participate in the pedagogical project of male subject formation. The author focuses on the intersection of semiotics, pedagogy and aesthetics, and demonstrates how changing models of signification give rise to new strategies in subject formation. Drawing on Foucault, she identifies two major semiotic paradigm shifts in the eighteenth century: first the "transparency model" of the mid-eighteenth century, which presumes that the sign is an ideal representation of the signified; and second the "intransitive" or "self-referential model" that emerges late in the century. With each of these …

New And Old Histories: The Case Of Hölderlin And Württemberg Pietism, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1992

New And Old Histories: The Case Of Hölderlin And Württemberg Pietism, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Literary opinion generally concurs that Friedrich Hölderlin, whose writings abound with Christian references, was in some manner influenced by the pietist milieu of his native Württemberg. The precise nature of this influence is still in the process of being clarified, and results of the research vary widely depending on how Württemberg pietism is defined, what sources are consulted, and to what extent social or institutional factors are considered. Much of the literature addressing this topic is informed by historiographical assumptions which tend to flatten both Württemberg pietism and Hölderlin's writings into a historical teleology. I would like to examine here …

Review Of Wolfgang Wittkowski, Ed., Revolution Und Autonomie: Deutsche Autonomieästhetik Im Zeitalter Der Französischen Revolution. Ein Symposium., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

This volume is the last of five in a series edited by Wolfgang Wittkowski and based on symposia held at SUNY-Albany on various aspects of German Classicism. The topic of this last symposium—aesthetic autonomy— fairly bristles with controversy, as historically it has formed a dividing line of sorts between ideological camps within German literary scholarship. Beginning with the Bildungsbürgertum of the 19th century, aesthetic autonomy came to be defined as the mark of highest literary quality, defined formally in terms of closure, self-containment and “perfection,” and restricted in terms of content to the apolitical, “purely aesthetic” realm. On the other …

Sensate Language And The Hermetic Tradition In Friedrich Christoph Oetinger's Biblisches Und Emblematisches Wörterbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1992

Sensate Language And The Hermetic Tradition In Friedrich Christoph Oetinger's Biblisches Und Emblematisches Wörterbuch, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The rise of rationalistic moral theology in the 18th century reflects the prevailing assumption of Enlightened thought that moral concepts were the privileged hermeneutical telos of the "coarse" or sensate language in the Bible and Christian dogma. The theological school known as neology supported this view and proposed an exegetical strategy for extracting the "pure" moral sense from the "coarse" or sensate text. In 1772 the Berlin neologian Wilhelm Abraham Teller (1734-1804) published a programmatic guide to this exegetical strategy, a dictionary entitled Wörterbuch des Neuen Testaments zur Erklärung der christlichen Lehre. I would like to discuss here a critical …

Review Of Axel Kuhn, Et Al., Revolutionsbegeisterung An Der Hohen Carlsschule, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1991

Review Of Axel Kuhn, Et Al., Revolutionsbegeisterung An Der Hohen Carlsschule, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

In the last twenty years a number of scholars have discovered growing evidence for revolutionary sympathy and activity among German intellectuals living during the French Revolution. Axel Kuhn, historian at the Technische Hochschule in Stuttgart, has contributed to this body of research with his study of the Hohe Carlsschule, the military academy founded in Stuttgart by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, famous for its oppressively strict discipline and its exceptionally talented students, including Friedrich Schiller. As Kuhn says, the book is written in the form of a detective novel, and relates how he went about uncovering and piecing together the …

Till Eulenspiegel's Transgressions Against Convention: Interpreting The Parasite, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1991

Till Eulenspiegel's Transgressions Against Convention: Interpreting The Parasite, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Till is the projection of anxieties arising in the face of social instability. Bote, who was witness to just how fragile the given order of patrician rule in Brunswick was, was sensible both to its weaknesses and to its preferability to disorder. The shifting locus of perverseness in TE provides an adequate structure for Bote, who is critical of his society, but uneasy about the forces threatening to tear it apart altogether. The violability of the order is so profound, that at times there seems to be no position which can be defended against parasitic infection. Bote’s admonitory intention thus …

Hermeneutica Gloriae Vs. Hermeneutica Crucis: Sebastian Franck And Martin Luther On The Clarity Of Scripture, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1990

Hermeneutica Gloriae Vs. Hermeneutica Crucis: Sebastian Franck And Martin Luther On The Clarity Of Scripture, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Martin Luther maintains throughout his work, and with special emphasis in On the Bondage of the Will, that Scripture is clear. Unlike Erasmus, who warns that we should avoid obscure parts of Scripture that, like the Cave of Corycos, would lure us too close to terrors beyond our comprehension, Luther argues that Scripture has been placed in the clearest light by the coming of Christ, in whom all of Scripture's mysteries have been revealed. If we were to look for a contemporary of Luther's to represent the opposite pole, the obscurity or ambiguity of Scripture, it would not be Erasmus …

Review Of Heidelberg Im Säkularen Umbruch. Traditionsbewußtsein Und Kulturpolitik Um 1800, Edited By Friedrich Strack, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1990

Review Of Heidelberg Im Säkularen Umbruch. Traditionsbewußtsein Und Kulturpolitik Um 1800, Edited By Friedrich Strack, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

This twelfth volume in the Deutscher Idealismus Philosophie und Wirkungsgeschichte in Quellen und Studien series on aspects of German Idealism maintains the high quality set by earlier volumes in this series. It consists of 23 articles that originally were presented at a colloquium held in Heidelberg in the fall of 1985 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Heidelberg University. The collection focuses on the period of transition at the University after 1803 when, in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars, the Palatinate was divided and Heidelberg was incorporated into Baden.

On Parasitic Discourse In Till Eulenspiegel: Can We Take It Seriously?, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 1990

On Parasitic Discourse In Till Eulenspiegel: Can We Take It Seriously?, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

The issue we are addressing here concerns how – or if -- we can take non-serious language seriously, or even legitimate it. Derrida wishes to consider marginal, parasitic, borderline cases, because they give him “insight into the general functioning of a textual system.” If we simply identify and banish the parasite, we will end up retracing the boundaries of convention; if we look at the parasite as part of a whole system, then our perspective goes beyond that of the insider. This has direct implications for how we interpret Till Eulenspiegel. We can retrace the banishments as they occur …

Murder And Suicide Revisited: Johannes R. Becher's Literary Treatment Of A Youthful Tragedy, Robert K. Shirer Jun 1989

Murder And Suicide Revisited: Johannes R. Becher's Literary Treatment Of A Youthful Tragedy, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

The final poem of Die Gnade eines Frühlings, Johannes R. Becher's first book of verse, is entitled "Darstellung." The poet displays himself in front of "das Volk," who will judge him:

Er bebt. Sol1 seine Scham entschleiern . . .

"Alle meine Schamgebundenheiten
Wollen überwunden an mir niedergleiten!"--

Da ward es Licht!

The poet, by putting himself and his shame on exhibit-by the public confession of publishing his work-is bathed in a cleansing light and can overcome his guilt.

Forty years later, Becher reflected in his diary upon his youthful attraction to the confessional elements of Catholicism. He recalls his …

Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Oct 1988

Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Noted Germanist Martin Swales offers a volume designed to introduce English speakers to German lyric poetry from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. Seventeen poets are included, each represented with several poems (between six and eight is the norm, with Goethe at the high end with eighteen, and Novalis at the low, with two). The poems are in German only; Swales' intrduction and notes (an intrductory paragraph on each author and brief synopses of each poem along with some formal observations) are in English. Swales' historical schema lends this book of poetry a degree of thematic coherence unusual for a …

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nicolai Riedel has once more performed a valuable service for Uwe Johnson scholars. With this volume he provides a documentary complement to his excellent bibliographies and his useful analyses of Johnson reception. Riedel has collected seventy short newspaper and magazine pieces about Johnson's early work, many of which have been hitherto virtually inaccessible. There are six general features, twenty-two reviews of Mutmassungen über Jakob, twenty-two reviews of Das dritte Buch über Achim, and twenty reviews of the posthumously published first novel Ingrid Babendererde.

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nachdenken über Christa T. is one of the most widely discussed novels in GDR literature, and a reviewer therefore approaches a new book-length interpretation with some trepidation. However, Wolfram and Helmtrud Mauser's study is fresh, insightful, and clearly written. The volume simultaneously does justice to a very difficult text and situates it intelligently in the context of GDR literature of the 1960s and 1970s. While their interpretation is not exhaustive, the authors demonstrate familiarity with the large body of Wolf literature, and their notes point the reader to other interpretative approaches.

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1988

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Eric Santner's study, "intended both as a 'revisionist' reading of Hölderlin's later poetry and an introduction to a larger study of issues concerning narrative theory," interprets formal aspects of the later poems—what has traditionally been called their harte Fügung—in terms of narrative parataxis, i.e. a breakdown in the Idealist "narrative of redemption." Santner begins with a theoretical discussion of narrative drawn chiefly from Hayden White and Roland Barthes (especially from Camera Lucida). Opposing "narrative vigilance," that potentially pathological compulsion to comprehend particulars within a hypotactic, overarching narrative structure, is a strategy of parataxis whereby narrative vigilance is released …

Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer Jan 1988

Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Uwe Johnson is seldom discussed as a GDR author, for it was not until after his 1959 decision «to relocate,» as he put it, to the West that Johnson became established as a literary force. Literary historians often mention Johnson along with Gunther Grass and Martin Walser when they discuss the important novelists that burst onto the literary scene in West Germany at the end of the 1950’s. But Johnson’s work—from Mutamaßsunmgen über Jakob to Jahrestage—is unthinkable without his education and experiences in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. With the posthumous publication of his first novel Ingrid …

Review Of Reinhard Breymayer, Ed., Hölderlin, Friedrich (Zuschreibung). Hymne An Die Heiterkeit. Ein Unbekanntes Lied “Gesungen Bei Der Einweihung Eines Gartenhauses Das Zur Aufschrift Hat: Serenity’, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jun 1987

Review Of Reinhard Breymayer, Ed., Hölderlin, Friedrich (Zuschreibung). Hymne An Die Heiterkeit. Ein Unbekanntes Lied “Gesungen Bei Der Einweihung Eines Gartenhauses Das Zur Aufschrift Hat: Serenity’, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

On August 31, 1984, the Tübingen Germanist Reinhard Breymayer published an article in the Stuttgarter Zeitung announcing his discovery of a poem with the heading “Gesungen bei der Einweihung eines Gartenhauses, das zur Aufschrift hat: SERENITY,” which he believed could be ascribed conclusively to Friedrich Hölderlin. The announcement sparked off a minor controversy among several Germanists which was documented in the European press, the most critical voice being that of Jochen Hieber (FAZ, September 17, 1984; FAZ, October 22, 1984). Breymayer came across the poem over a year prior to his announcement while reading through the volumes …

Review Of The Apocalyptic Vision: A Thematic Exploration Of Postwar German Literature, By Alan Frank Keele, Robert K. Shirer Feb 1986

Review Of The Apocalyptic Vision: A Thematic Exploration Of Postwar German Literature, By Alan Frank Keele, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Alan Frank Keele sets out to identify an "apocalyptic vision" of German society in postwar German literature and to describe the literary figures who see it and spread their warnings about it. The vision consists of runaway technology, evil toys, aborted children, and "de-humanized robot/citizens" (p. 125). Those who see and seek to share this vision are the physically and psychologically walking wounded, refugees from a war-torn world, who reject the values of postwar society.

Before examining the author's argument and evidence, it is important to point out two serious terminological weaknesses. Whereas the subtitle promises an exploration of "postwar …
