Human And Non-Human Agencies In The Anthropocene, Gabriele Dürbeck, Caroline Schaumann, Heather Sullivan Oct 2015

Human And Non-Human Agencies In The Anthropocene, Gabriele Dürbeck, Caroline Schaumann, Heather Sullivan

Heather I Sullivan

The era of human impact throughout the Earth’s biosphere since the Industrial Revolution that has recently been named the Anthropocene poses many challenges to the humanities, particularly in terms of human and non-human agency. Using diverse examples from literature, travel reflections, and science that document a wide range of agencies beyond the human including landscape, ice, weather, volcanic energy or gastropods, and insects, this essay seeks to formulate a broader sense of agency. All of our examples probe new kinds of relationships between humans and nature. By configuring a close interconnection and interdependence between these entities, the Anthropocene discourse defines …

Foreign Language Learners' Use And Perception Of Online Dictionaries: A Survey Study, Li Jin, Elizabeth Deifell Nov 2013

Foreign Language Learners' Use And Perception Of Online Dictionaries: A Survey Study, Li Jin, Elizabeth Deifell

Li Jin

The importance of dictionaries in language learning is undisputable. The emergence of online dictionaries has noticeably influenced the way students learn a foreign language (FL). This study examines FL learners’ use and perception of bilingual online dictionaries through an analysis of over 250 responses to a web-based survey from learners enrolled in postsecondary language courses in the U.S. The most popular online dictionaries among eight languages are presented along with self-reported data regarding look-up behaviors while reading, writing, listening and speaking the target language. The results suggest that online dictionaries are most often consulted when learners are creating and/or deciphering …

La Pratique Ironique De L’Appel À L’Autorité Dans Les Péritextes Du Théâtre De Corneille, Nina Ekstein Sep 2013

La Pratique Ironique De L’Appel À L’Autorité Dans Les Péritextes Du Théâtre De Corneille, Nina Ekstein

Nina C Ekstein

The Theatrical Lieu De Culture Within Molière’S Theater, Nina Ekstein Sep 2013

The Theatrical Lieu De Culture Within Molière’S Theater, Nina Ekstein

Nina C Ekstein

Molière’s theater is itself, by definition, a lieu de culture. The performance of one of his plays transforms the space in which it occurs into a lieu de culture by virtue of the presence of two crucial features. First, the performance belongs to a cultural domain, in this case specifically the theater. By ‘culture’ I mean simply that which is tied to the arts, letters, manners, and scholarly pursuits. Second there must be an audience present for that performance. The same basic situation obviously holds true for any playwright whose plays are performed. What makes Molière interesting is the degree …

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein Sep 2013

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein

Nina C Ekstein

Sexual desire is ubiquitous in all theater. It follows that virtually all theatrical traditions struggle with the issue of the representation of that desire onstage. The French stage of the 1630s and Jean Rotrou's theater of that period in particular constitute an unusual moment of relative freedom before the imposition of the bienséances banished sexual activity from the stage. What I propose is a theatrical reading of sex in Rotrou's plays, a tripartite examination of dramatic strategy: how Rotrou foregrounds the scandalous by direct depiction of sexuality onstage; how at other moments he moves to attenuate its prurient force by …

Irony In Emmanuel Carrère’S La Moustache, Nina Ekstein Sep 2013

Irony In Emmanuel Carrère’S La Moustache, Nina Ekstein

Nina C Ekstein

The term "irony" is often applied to film, but in varied and often imprecise ways. Sometimes this slippery term is used to denote an inter-textual (or more precisely interfilmic) reference with the potential for parody; at other times it may mark a discordance between different channels (for example, between the film music and what is shown onscreen).1 I will focus on a particular type of irony, tied to undecidability, in which two alternatives are held in suspension, both present, both undeniable, and yet perfectly incompatible. A concrete example is the drawing that from one perspective seems to be of a …

Performing Violence In Rotrou’S Theater, Nina Ekstein Sep 2013

Performing Violence In Rotrou’S Theater, Nina Ekstein

Nina C Ekstein

Violence has a significant and varied role in the theater of Jean Rotrou. Discord and strife are natural to the stage and violence is one of the ways such conflict may be expressed. The inherently spectacular nature of violence makes it particularly theatrical. At the same time, violence pleasingly tantalizes audiences. In this examination of Rotrou’s entire theatrical corpus, I first consider the use of “real” violence, both on stage and off. More interesting and even more common is potential violence, which includes threats of all sorts, as well as fortuitous interruptions. Potential violence avoids the serious difficulties that staging …

Anti-Haitian Rhetoric And The Monumentalizing Of Violence In Joaquin Balaguer's Guía Emocional De La Ciudad Romántica, Medar Serrata Dec 2012

Anti-Haitian Rhetoric And The Monumentalizing Of Violence In Joaquin Balaguer's Guía Emocional De La Ciudad Romántica, Medar Serrata

Medar Serrata

This essay compares four editions of the book Guía emocional de la ciudad romántica, by the Dominican author and politician Joaquin Balaguer. The book, a celebration of Santo Domingo’s monumental architecture, evokes the topos of the romantic poet who strolls down the streets of an ancient city admiring the remnants of the past. A closer examination, however, reveals a text deeply invested in the monumentalizing of violence—a text that portrays the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo as the savior of the nation. Moreover, the metaphorical stroll that the reader is invited to take reenacts the movement of history in order to …

Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker Gonzalez-Allende Jul 2012

Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Eugenio o proclamación de la Primavera (1938) by Rafael García Serrano, and Unificación (1937) by Jacinto Miquelarena are two propagandistic works in which the male protagonists most fully embody the core values of Falangist masculinity. The glorification of youth appears clearly in the two texts, along with an emphasis on violence. War becomes the rite of passage for the two male protagonists, who also renounce romantic relationships to devote themselves to the nation. The two main characters find in their fellow comrades a substitute for their families; in this sense, the nation is constructed as a masculine project. The presence …

La Novela Rosa De Ambientación Vasca E Ideología Franquista Durante La Guerra Civil Española (The Basque Romance Novel And Its Francoist Ideology During The Spanish Civil War), Iker González-Allende

Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Introduction (Partial) To Pilar De Zubiaurre, Evocaciones: Artículos Y Diario (1909-1958), Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Garai, rodeado …

El Mar Y La Pared: El Exilio Histórico Frente Al Exilio Existencial En La Poesía Final De Ernestina De Champourcin, Iker González-Allende Jul 2012

El Mar Y La Pared: El Exilio Histórico Frente Al Exilio Existencial En La Poesía Final De Ernestina De Champourcin, Iker González-Allende

Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez Feb 2012

Gender And Heritage Spanish Bilingual Grammars: A Study Of Code-Mixed Determiner Phrases And Copula Constructions, Elena Valenzuela, Ana Faure, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo, Ewelina Barski, Yolanda Pangtay, Adriana Diez

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. Problems with the acquisition of gender marking on the noun and/or with gender agreement are well-known in the L2 literature (Hawkins 1998; Fernández–Garcia 1999; Franceschina 2001; Bruhn de Garavito and White 2002; White …

Transferencia Diferencial: El Caso Del Náhuatl Y El Español, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

Alma P Ramirez-Trujillo

Recent research suggests that, when the two languages spoken by bilinguals share certain features, but one of the languages favors the use of a particular structure, possibly due to pragmatic reasons, the two languages may converge in the relevant domain (Hulk and Müller 2000; Müller and Hulk 2001; Sánchez 2003; Sánchez, 2004; Toribio 2001). This in turn may lead to convergence between the two languages in a society where most of the speakers are bilingual, assuming bilinguals and second language learners are often the agents of language change (Winford, 2003). Classical Nahuatl is a polysynthetic language (Baker, 2001) with variable …
