The year of the Maine Folklife Survey is drawing to a close at the end of January. We are in the wrap-up phase, having completed fieldwork in October. Six field workers visited some 300 homes throughout the State, and worked in some 130 townships in every county over the summer, gathering information of all kinds from axe handle making to step dancing to baking bean-hole beans. People have been marvelously friendly, have understood why we were gathering traditional materials, and certainly have been helpful. In December of 1980 and April 21, 1981, Anne Ledford and Susan Rippy interviewed Winthrop alumni and former faculty member Bessie Garison. Garison describes student life at Winthrop from 1908 until her graduation in 1912, as well as her memories of Winthrop’s training school. Garison discusses her memories of Winthrop’s founding, campus life, buildings, uniforms, and professors. Garison offers insights on changes made at Winthrop between her years as a student and when she began teaching in 1937. Dr. Richard K. Lunt, folklorist and author of Northeast Folklore Volume X ("Jones Tracy, Tall Tale Teller from Mt. Desert Island"), is currently directing the Maine Folklife Survey. The project, a statewide effort made possible by grants from the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Folk Arts Program of the National Endowment for the Arts, will assess the current status of folk and traditional arts and crafts in Maine. The interest is in the here and now, what traditional activities are still being performed.

Cruzaba por el puente libre, por varios lugares hasta con bicicleta. Una vez fue asustado por la "emigracion". Tiene varias detenciones. Tambien platica de arresto por policia de UTEP. Platica de un companero golpeado. Dice que la policia es despota aqui en El Paso porque les tira todo. Fue golpeado en Juarez. Ha sido encarcelado varias veces y habla de la mugre en la carcel, piojos y maltrato.
