When Stephen Cole first phoned the Northeast Archives in the winter of 1988, to urge us to support a modest documentary of the closing of Penobscot Poultry, Co., in Belfast, Maine, he had little idea I suspect, what he was getting us all into. Penobscot Poultry — Maine's last broiler processing firm located in Waldo County, the heart of chicken processing country — was about to close down, and Steve thought the Northeast Archives should do something about it.

To say the 2001-02 University of Maine ice hockey season was one of ups-and-downs will not do it justice. After losing legendary head coach Shawn Walsh to cancer less than 24 hours before the first scheduled practice, the Black Bears rebounded to come within 53 seconds of winning it's third national championship. However, the National Championship was not to be as Minnesota won the game in overtime. The season was capped off when 2001-02 interim head coach Tim Whitehead was named head coach on April 8, and then two weeks later was named the winner of the Spencer Penrose Award, …

Creative Book Arts Preserving Family History, Sarah Owen Tabor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the project I have developed a series of four artist's books from material I have collected pertaining to my family history. Over the last four years I have collected written narratives, photographs, tape-recorded interviews, genealogies, letters, electronic communications, and other documents. The first book in the series is an accordion-style book contrasting a trip my Great Grandmother took to Yellowstone National Park by covered wagon from Oklahoma Territory in 1903 with my trip from Maine to the same park in 1978. Though technology had changed the mode of transportation, and the intervening years had seen changes in many other …

Under His Own Flag: John Baker’S Gravestone Memorial In Retrospect, George L. Findlen Jul 2002

Under His Own Flag: John Baker’S Gravestone Memorial In Retrospect, George L. Findlen

Maine History

John Baker is an enigmatic figure, half hero and half scoundrel His actions in raising the American flag on the north shore of the St. John River in July 1827, in defiance of British authorities, contributed to the tensions that resulted in the “Bloodless” Aroostook War in 1839, and this in turn provided the impetus for settling the U.S.-Canadian boundary along the St. John River according to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. Jn 1868 the State of Maine erected a monument of sorts to the memory of John Baker in a cemetery near Fort Fairfield. Pondering why the monument was …

He brought with him with fresh approach to teaching art and a mission to bring both painters and patrons up to date. During a brief tenure at Bowdoin College, Currier signaled a break from the old- fashioned landscape painting that dominated the Maine art scene. Although his European, Beaux-Arts ideas were …

Now protected as part of the Allagash wilderness waterway, Chamberlain Farm has come a full circle, and is now a fair semblance of the wilderness early native and Euro American visitors …
