Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.

This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.

The University of Maine men's and women’s swimming and diving teams are prepared to make another run at the America East Championships in the 2002-2003 season. Head Coach Jeff Wren begins his 13th campaign and is joined for a fourth season by assistant coach Susie Lizzotte. Head Coach Rick Filighera, 35, enters his sixth season at the helm of the Black Bears women’s ice hockey program, and eighth as a headcoach. Filighera, who was announced as the first head coach of the University of Maine varsity women’s ice hockey team in September 1997, has a record of 62-72-10 in five seasons at Maine and an overall record of 86-81-12 in eight seasons of head coaching. Filighera’s record of 24-9-2 in two seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology, combined with his record at Maine, ranks him 11th among college coaches in career wins.

To say the 2001-02 University of Maine ice hockey season was one of ups-and-downs will not do it justice. After losing legendary head coach Shawn Walsh to cancer less than 24 hours before the first scheduled practice, the Black Bears rebounded to come within 53 seconds of winning it's third national championship. However, the National Championship was not to be as Minnesota won the game in overtime.
