Barbara Dunn Hitchner was born 4 March 1898 in Orono, Maine and was a graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1920. She was dedicated to her research of the history of Maine and the genealogy of many of the early families of the Penobscot Valley. Materials in the collection generally include newspaper clippings, original records and copies of original records, and notes from various sources. Genealogies also include Barbara Dunn Hitchner correspondence.

Stanley R. Tupper was born in Boston, Mass. in 1921. He graduated from Middlebury College, Vermont and received his LLb from LaSalle Extension in 1948. Tupper was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1949. He served in the Maine Legislature in 1953 and was elected to Congress in 1953. Tupper served in the 87th Congress from Maine's 2nd District, and the 88th-89th Congress from the 1st District. The J.F. Witter Teaching and Research Center, the livestock research facility at the University of Maine, often referred to as the Witter Farm, consists of 300 acres of land in Old Town, Maine, near the campus. Until the facility was constructed in 1972, livestock such as cattle and sheep were housed in barns on the main part of the campus in Orono.

The University of Maine System developed distance education methods based on interactive technologies to bring higher education to communities across Maine. The network of campuses and sites was known as the "Educational Network of Maine," and was linked by an interactive television system housed on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. A fiber optic spine connected seven university campuses with two way audio and video transmission. From the campuses, programming was distributed by ITFS microwave to over 85 locations in Maine.

The Martinon Lumber Company had its main office in Bangor, Maine, with a Canadian office in St. John, New Brunswick. This collection includes business records of the Martinon Lumber Company from 1916 to 1926. The first series, executive records, is the largest in the collection and is made up primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Many letters are between the Bangor and New Brunswick offices and are to or from Irving G. Stetson, Frank Hinckley, or Waldo Lowell.
