Finding Aids

The collection contains papers of various members of the Devereux family of Penobscot, Maine, as well as materials from other residents of Penobscot and Castine, Maine. Most notable are letters to Mark Devereux, 1862-1864, from his brother Charles Devereux while Charles was serving in the 16th Maine Infantry in Maryland and Virginia. Documents associated with various other individuals are also found in the collection; their relationship to the Devereux family is unclear.

The papers of Almon C. Day, a farmer and legislator from Turner, Maine. Included are correspondence, invoices, and other documents relating to Day's farm and his political career. The correspondence includes letters between Almon and his wife Clara during the years 1871 to 1884, a few letters to and from their children, and letters from Almon's and Clara's cousins.

Materials in the collection include many family letters, the diaries of two members of the Hewes family, and a few documents related to the attendance of Benjamin W. Hewes at Bowdoin College. The majority of the letters were saved by Benjamin W. Hewes and were written to him by friends and family members including his parents, sisters, and cousins.

Finding Aids

Ralph S. Bartlett, born in 1868 in Eliot, Maine, was an attorney who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1889 and from Boston University in 1892. This collection includes travel films made by Bartlett on nine trips he took between 1925 and 1933 to the Middle East, the Arctic Sea and the Baltic states, Europe, Canada, South America, Scandinavia, and Russia. An additional reel contains footage of family members.

The Canadian-American Center coordinates an extensive program of undergraduate and graduate Canadian Studies education at the University of Maine. The Center supports a major research library on Canada; promotes cross-border research in the humanities; social sciences, natural sciences, and professions; and directs the outreach programs to state, regional, and national audiences.

The records contain mainly textual information created by the Canadian-American Center, but there are also photographic material. Materials include lecture and workshop records; research grant and fund raising records; historical and biographical records; and scholarship and exchange records.

David G. Smith, a resident of Camden, Maine, had a life-long interest in and connection to the Katahdin Iron Works area of Maine. The collection is arranged in two series:

Series I: Katahdin Iron Works Information Files, contains all of the material gathered by Smith during his life-long association with and interest in the KI region and its history.

Series II: Pine Knot Association Records, contains Smith’s files about his activities in managing the finances and maintenance of the Pine Knot family camp at KI.

The papers of Ada Stetson Peirce McCormick, a social activist, author, editor of Letter Magazine (Tucson, Arizona), and founder of the Little Chapel of All Nations. The bulk of the papers are family letters or materials concerning the Peirce timberlands. Included also are copies of Ada Peirce McCormick's magazine Letter, magazine articles and clippings, correspondence, genealogies, wills, diaries, and photographs.

Marli Frances Weiner was born January 9, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Walter and Phyllis (Hirsch) Weiner. She received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, a master's degree in history from Sarah Lawrence College, and a doctorate in history from the University of Rochester in 1986.

Many of the source files include Dr. Weiner's research notes and provide page numbers, quotations, and responses to each text. Norman Nash was born in Bangor, Me. in 1888. He was educated at Harvard, Episcopal Theological Seminary, and Western Theological Seminary. He served in WWI as a Chaplain; from 1916-1939 and was a professor at the Episcopal Theological Seminary.

The Norman B. Nash collection contains historical research on Eastern Maine and New Brunswick. The collection includes manuscripts, notes, correspondence, and illustrations. A number of original documents are photocopied.

Correspondence, 1940-1954, consisting of letters from James A. Blanchard II to his wife, June E. (Peterson) Blanchard, while stationed in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II. One series of letters was pasted into a scrapbook by June Blanchard. Also includes letters and some memorabilia to Bob Blanchard, as well as letters from June Blanchard to James A. Blanchard II.

The collection contains research material and writings of Ralph S. Palmer, a professor and naturalist. It includes material related to Manly Hardy and his daughter Fannie Hardy Eckstorm, as well as an extensive reprint collection of publications in natural history and zoology. Included are notes, articles, clippings, photographs, reprints, ledgers, typescripts, illustrations, card indexes, and correspondence of Ralph S. Palmer, Jonathan Titcomb Hardy, Manly Hardy, Fannie Hardy Eckstorm, and Walter M. Hardy.

Barbara Dunn Hitchner was born 4 March 1898 in Orono, Maine and was a graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1920. She was dedicated to her research of the history of Maine and the genealogy of many of the early families of the Penobscot Valley. Materials in the collection generally include newspaper clippings, original records and copies of original records, and notes from various sources. Genealogies also include Barbara Dunn Hitchner correspondence.
