The STUFF of History is an integrated course activity that combines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of materials science and history of technology. The term “integrated” applies to every aspect of this course: both instructors are present at (nearly) all times; both instructors assess every major assignment jointly; every major assignment contains elements from both portions of this course; and you receive one grade for all eight credits. We think that that this integration comes very naturally: the subjects complement one another and the use of two perspectives produces a deep, provocative understanding.

Gauging Gender: A Metaphysics, Stephen Asma Nov 2011

Gauging Gender: A Metaphysics, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

In this article the author discusses sex and gender in human beings and examines how the study of science, particularly biology, has influenced the study of these subjects in higher education. It traces the evolution of sex and gender studies in academe, comments on the failure of many humanities scholars to dismiss biology in studying human behavior, and explores ways in which psychoanalysis, social constructionism, and metaphysics have informed the debate over the differences between sex and gender. Other topics include research conducted by Anne Fausto-Sterling regarding intersexed people, scientific tests focusing on sexual preference in rats, and thoughts by …

Richard Verstegan's Reinvention Of Anglo-Saxon England: A Contribution From The Continent, Richard Clement Nov 2011

Richard Verstegan's Reinvention Of Anglo-Saxon England: A Contribution From The Continent, Richard Clement

Richard W. Clement

The reinvention of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is an historicized approach to constructions of the past. How and why does the present of any period uses the past to promote its own opinions, beliefs, doctrines or views? In particular, this volume demonstrates that reinventions of past eras or figures can be motivated by a nationalistic desire to create cultural 'roots', to discover origins that justify a regime or group's self-identity, to appropriate a cultural icon or neglected author for a particular political agenda, or to reflect on contemporary social issues via a remote time and place. Reworkings or …

Martin Luther King Jr. Day And The Politics Of Race, Jill Gill Oct 2011

Martin Luther King Jr. Day And The Politics Of Race, Jill Gill

Jill K. Gill

The last few states to adopt the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday were largely non-southern, overwhelmingly white, and rural. Gill explores the political process by which one of these, Idaho, in 1990 became the 46th state to claim the holiday. In a conservative libertarian-leaning state with no significant non-white voting bloc and a weak understanding of King’s historical significance, politicians saw little need for the holiday until the Aryan Nations’ violent white-supremacist actions hurt the state’s image. Ironically, the Aryan Nations became Idaho’s “Bull Connor,” not only shaming the state into creating King Day, but schooling it in the pertinence …

Psicopatologia E Poder. Uma Lição De "Mentes Perigosas", Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2011

Psicopatologia E Poder.

Republicanos Ou Publicanos? A Constituição De 1911 E A Concretização Da Ii República, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Oct 2011

Republicanos Ou Publicanos? A Constituição De 1911 E A Concretização Da Ii República, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Satyagraha As A Peaceful Method Of Conflict Resolution By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel Oct 2011

Satyagraha As A Peaceful Method Of Conflict Resolution By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Conflict resolution discourse of modern problem solving and win-win [as opposed to power-based and zero sum] approaches leading to integrative conflict resolution [as opposed to mere compromise and distributive outcomes] strongly echoes Gandhi's own writings and the analyses of some Gandhian scholars. The Twenty-First Century radical thinkers of environment, human rights and women's movement advocate conflict resolution techniques as potentially being about more than the solution of immediate problems that see a broader personal and societal transformation as the ultimate goal. Gandhian Satyagraha should be squarely located within conflict resolution discourse. In this principle of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi introduced technique …
