Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Beginning in November 1996 and continuing until July of 1997, the Adjutant General’s Department of Texas conducted a self-sponsored Phase I cultural resources survey of Camp Swift in Bastrop County, Texas. The project surveyed approximately 5,000 acres of the camp, approximately 1,000 of which had been previously surveyed. A total of 58 new archaeological sites were recorded, of which 26 were prehistoric, 24 were historic, and 8 had both prehistoric and historic components. In addition to these sites, 42 previously identified sites were revisited.

From August 2000 through January 2001, The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing for 23 prehistoric archaeological sites (41LR152, 41LR153, 41LR155, 41LR156, 41LR157, 41LR158, 41LR160, 41LR163, 41LR164, 41LR168, 41LR170, 41LR186, 41LR187, 41LR202, 41LR204, 41LR207, 41LR208, 41LR212, 41LR260, 41LR266, 41LR268, 41LR285, and 41LR286) located within the Camp Maxey training facility in north Lamar County, Texas, under contract with Texas Army National Guard. This report contains the results of archaeological work performed by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) for City Public Service (CPS). The archaeological investigation and monitoring for the Mission Trails Underground Conversion Project was carried out under Texas Historical Commission (THC) Permit Number: 2020, and the work was conducted at each of the four historical San Antonio missions which make up San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

In December 1998, TxDOT archeologists conducted an archeological survey for the proposed expansion of the walking and bicycle facility at Rose Rudman Park in Tyler, Texas. One previously unrecorded archeological site (41SM231) was recorded within the ca. 10-m wide trail corridor. In March 1999, TxDOT archeologists excavated two contiguous 1-x-1 -m test units at the site. Ninety-eight aboriginal ceramic sherds were recovered from test units and shovel tests. Recovered lithics include only a single edge-modified flake and a few pieces of debitage. No burned rock features, feature stains, postmolds, or datable remains were identified.

Th e purpose of the present paper is to investigate Timbuktu’s economic decline in the three centuries elapsed between 1526, when Leo Africanus reached the Mysterious City, and 1830, when the fi rst European explorers arrived in Timbuktu. It is argued that Timbuktu’s decline was neither an accident nor the result of inevitable natural conditions. Timbuktu’s decay was the product of historical and social forces. Specifi cally, it is argued that Timbuktu lost power and prestige because its market decayed. However, it is also suggested that no single factor can account individually for this event. This is an investigation into the origin of Communist policing in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Existing literature on the PRC police (baowei, gongan, jingcha) are not in agreement as to the origin of Communist policing. Most sources, particularly western ones, point to the formation of the Ministry of Public Security in November of 1949 as the origination of Communist police. Others, particularly the PRC police historians, have traced the starting date to November of 1931 when the Chinese Soviet government in Shan-Gan-Ning border area established the Political Security Department (zhengzhi baoweiju). Explores the life and achievements of Brevet Major General J.L. Chamberlain, the "hero of Little Round Top," describing his activities as pre-war professor, Civil War leader, and post-war governor, college president and federal official. Chamberlain, a military novice at the beginning of the war, was appointed second-in command of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in August, 1862. Quickly learning the soldier's craft, Chamberlain was promoted to Colonel and regimental commander in June, 1863, just prior to the battle of Gettysburg. An international ensemble of folklore scholars looks at varied ways in which national and ethnic groups have traditionally and creatively used imagined states of existence-some idealizations, some demonizations-in the construction of identities for themselves and for others. Drawing on oral traditions, especially as represented in traditional ballads, broadsides, and tale collections, the contributors consider fertile landscapes of the mind where utopias overflow with bliss and abundance, stereotyped national and ethnic caricatures define the lives of "others," nostalgia glorifies home and occupation, and idealized and mythological animals serve as cultural icons and guideposts to harmonious social life.

Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro

Publications and Research

Although the Internet provides access to a wealth of information, there is little, if any, control over the quality of that information. Side-by-side with reliable information, one finds disinformation, misinformation, and hoaxes. The authors of this paper discuss numerous examples of fabricated historical information on the Internet (ranging from denials of the Holocaust to personal vendettas), offer suggestions on how to evaluate websites, and argue that these fabrications can be incorporated into bibliographic instruction classes.

Prior to the coming of the Protestant Reformation in 1536, the area in which Peder Kjoilhede (hereinafter Kjolhede) was born and grew up was owned by the Roman Catholic bishops. This area, south of the Limfjord and close to the west coast of Jutland, became the property of the king. It was parceled out by him to those who had rendered service to him, and much later, through division and sales, a portion of it came to be the property of Johan Kjolhede and was known as the farm of Kjolhedegird.

At the beginning of 1999, The Danish Emigration Archives in cooperation with the Royal Danish Consulate General in Chicago undertook a preliminary investigation of Danish emigrants and their descendants in Chicago and Racine, both of them cities that have attracted large numbers of Danes over a long period of time. According to the 1990 federal census, 1,634,669 Americans claim Danish ancestry. Of these, 70,586 reside in Illinois and 80,791 in Wisconsin. The goal was to obtain a picture of the Danish-American societies in the two selected communities by distributing an extensive questionnaire followed up by personal interviews with selected individuals …
