Family, Feud, And The Conduct Of War In Anglo-Saxon England, Elnathan Barnett
Family, Feud, And The Conduct Of War In Anglo-Saxon England, Elnathan Barnett
Master's Theses
Anglo-Saxon society was built around the concept of feud, and it is clear from history, law, and literature that the twin concerns of family and vengeance remained pillars of Anglo-Saxon society and consciousness throughout the period. Given constant warfare and the cultural and social importance of feuding, it would appear logical that warfare was essentially feud writ large, that conflicts pitted one kin group against another and vengeance for the dead was a major, if not the only, reason for making war. However, royal families often fought among themselves, while wars waged to avenge a death are conspicuous by their …

The Anglo-American Press And The 'Secret' Rearmament Of Hitler's Germany, 1933 To 1935, Jason Ranke
All Theses
This thesis will examine the Anglo-American press coverage of Germany's secret rearmament between 1933 and 1935, with the aim of pursuing three main objectives:
1. Describe the rearmament process occurring in Germany and how it related to, or influenced, the country's position in international affairs.
2. Investigate the accuracy and objectivity of Anglo-American press coverage of the German rearmament. This goal will be achieved by analyzing and comparing information from several major American and British newspapers and magazines from 1933 to 1935 with data gleaned from the principal secondary sources on Nazi rearmament and foreign policy.
3. Determine how Hitler …

WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers. Its website, launched in 2006 under The Sunshine Press organisation claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch. WikiLeaks describes its founders as a mix of Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its director. The site was originally launched as a user-editable wiki, but has progressively moved towards …

Desafios Constitucionais, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

A Critical Study Of Organizational Communication And Organizational Communication Theories- A Historical Perspective, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Organizational Communication is the study that looks at human communication within and outside the organization. Conrad and Poole (1998) break the definition of organizational communication in parts, by first defining communication and then analyses the organization. These researchers define communication as “a process through which people, acting together, create, sustain, and manage meanings through the use of verbal and nonverbal signs and symbols within a particular context” (Conrad and Poole, 1998, p. 5). In the context of this book, Kenyans and their leaders are communicating their views and final decision through the ballot box to elect their third president, during …

Public Accountability And Media : Its Success And Failure In Performing The Role As A Force For Public Accountability, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr
Ratnesh Dwivedi
Media accountability is a phrase that refers to the general (especially western) belief that mass media has to be accountable in the public’s interest - that is, they are expected to behave in certain ways that contribute to the public good. The concept is not clearly defined, and often collides with commercial interests of media owners; legal issues, such as the constitutional right to the freedom of the press in the U.S.; and governmental concerns about public security and order. Several international organizations, like International Freedom of Expression Exchange, Freedom House, International Press Institute, World Press Freedom Committee and the …
Direito E Poder Em Nietzsche, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Direito E Poder Em Nietzsche, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

In the year 1860 I decided to emigrate to the United States of North America. I traveled to Basel to sign a contract with Mr. Zwilchenbart.3 Our party grew to ten people, four were from the Canton Aargau and six from Canton St. Gallen.

Appendix: Meeting Of The Veterans In Luzern, January 29, 1899
Swiss American Historical Society Review
A gathering of Swiss veterans of the American Civil War was suggested by Colonel Emil Frey. He was a Veteran of that War, having served as major in the 82nd Illinois Infantry Regiment, and he was taken prisoner in the battle of Gettysburg. He returned to Switzerland where he pursued a successful career in public life. Between 1892 and 1897 he was a Federal Councilor (Bundesrat), that is a member of the seven-member executive branch of the Swiss Government, being in charge of the Military Department. In October 1898 Captain Casimir Muri sent out a call to …

Adventures In North America According To My Own Experiences: My Military Service, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
I came back to New Orleans. There one talked about nothing else but war. The northern and southern states rebelled against each other. In the latter, Negro slaves were used in the cotton- and sugar cane plantations. The others abhorred the trade with people and worked toward the abolition of slavery. For many years the Democrats, as the friends of slavery called themselves, were successful in winning for one of theirs the presidential election that took place every four years and thereby dominated the federal government.

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: My Trip To California, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Now that the war was finished, I had to look for a job. I decided to go first to New York. I didn't take along the many and large mattresses on which I had rested during four years, nor could the "guards" that used to jump in the grass follow me, and they probably have not escaped their certain death. So I came to New York. It was twelve at night. We could leave the boat only the next morning because all inns were closed. Thus I headed to town in the early morning hours and saw a sign that …

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: About Gold Digging, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the year 1848, 25 men traveled from New York to California. They had heard that gold had been found there, and they wanted to try their luck. When they sailed along the Mexican coast, they stopped at a small town to get drinking water. They saw a brickyard, and one of the group named Gehn was observing curiously how bricks were formed. The owner of the brickyard now asked him, whether he was somehow familiar with the business. Gehn answered that he was a professional brick maker and had worked since his youth in his father's brickmaking business. The …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
After having spent two dozen years in California, I decided to return to my home country Switzerland. I arrived in New York by the shortest way. Several times I had read in newspapers about the "Hotel St. Gotthard," and I thought that this must be a Swiss hotel. So I went to that place. When I entered the dining room the landlady welcomed me with friendly words. I answered: "The way you talk you must be from the Toggenburg." "Yes, I am," she replied, "I am born Alpiger from Alt St. Johann, and my husband is a citizen from the …

Prefatory Note, Richard Blatter
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Andreas Hanselmann (1825-1905) had his roots in the Toggenburg, a valley belonging to the Canton St.Gallen and situated in the northeastern part of Switzerland. Born in 1825, he left his wife Susette and his two children-a son who died early and a daughter Frieda, born 1856 in Wattwil-in 1860 and went to the United States. In those days, the dominant textile industry in the Toggenburg was hit by an economic crisis that led also others to emigrate, but Hanselmann offers no explanation for his departure. Being caught by the Civil War in New Orleans shortly after his arrival, he enrolled …

A Knight At The Opera: Heine, Wagner, Herzl, Peretz, And The Legacy Of Der Tannhäuser, Leah Garrett
Shofar Supplements in Jewish Studies
A Knight at the Opera examines the remarkable and unknown role that the medieval legend (and Wagner opera) Tannhäuser played in Jewish cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyzes how three of the greatest Jewish thinkers of that era, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, and I. L. Peretz, used this central myth of Germany to strengthen Jewish culture and to attack anti-Semitism. In the original medieval myth, a Christian knight lives in sin with the seductive pagan goddess Venus in the Venusberg. He escapes her clutches and makes his way to Rome to seek absolution from …

Republicanos Ou Publicanos? A Constituição De 1911 E A Concretização Da Ii República, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Propaganda And The 21st Century Student, Miguel Martinez-Saenz , Provost, Academic Affairs, Tammy M. Proctor
Administrators/Executives/Staff Scholarship
This short piece provides a way of thinking about the Enlightenment’s legacy and the strength of modern propaganda in order to enable world history teachers to use these themes in their classes, both for teaching history and for helping students to reflect on their own lives. The authors provide background on the ideas of 1930s critical theorists and their impact on the interwar period, then suggest practical ways that world history instructors (in high schools and universities) can use these insights in developing lectures, lesson plans, and assignments for their classrooms.
The Cultural Legacy Of The Williamite History In The Context Of Northern Ireland, John William Nelson
The Cultural Legacy Of The Williamite History In The Context Of Northern Ireland, John William Nelson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
History, in one capacity or another, is relevant to all of us. History influences and affects every individual in some way. It is a defining point of any cultural group; it determines that group‟s values and the lens through which the group‟s individuals look at the world. With that being said, it is more often than not the perceived history of a group, rather than the factual historical record, which holds the most sway over a culture‟s identity. The legacy of that collective memory of history is what this paper seeks to examine. In the following pages, the author will …

Defying De-Stalinization: Albania’S 1956, Elidor Mehilli
Publications and Research
Drawing on recently declassified Albanian, Soviet, East German, and Western archival sources, as well as a rich historiography on Nikita Khrushchev's secret speech and the Hungarian revolution of 1956, this article investigates the little-known events of 1956 in Albania. Rejecting de-Stalinization, the Albanian Communist leader Enver Hoxha was able to vindicate his position against Yugoslavia's brand of socialism abroad, fortify his rule at home, and claim more aid from Moscow, Beijing, and the Soviet bloc. This article discusses the Tirana Party Conference of April 1956, treating the Albanian Party of Labor (the Communist party) as an “information society.” The article …
Viking Age Arms And Armor Originating In The Frankish Kingdom, Valerie Dawn Hampton
Viking Age Arms And Armor Originating In The Frankish Kingdom, Valerie Dawn Hampton
The Hilltop Review
The export of Carolingian arms and armor to Northern regions outside the Frankish Empire from the 9th and early 10th century is a subject which has seen a gradual increase of interest among archaeologists and historians alike. Recent research has shown that the Vikings of this period bore Frankish arms, particularly swords, received either through trade or by spolia that is plunder.1 In the examination of material remains, illustrations, and capitularies, the reason why Carolingian arms and armor were prized amongst the Viking nations can be ascertained and evidence found as to how the Vikings came to possess such valued …
Burgundian/Habsburg Mint Policies And World Bullion Flows: A Monetary Interpretation Of The Rise And Fall Of Antwerp, 1400-1600, Shawn Adrian
The Hilltop Review
During the first half of the sixteenth century, the city of Antwerp (located in present-day Belgium about thirty miles north of Brussels) was one of the most significant entrepôts of the nascent modern world economy. A transcontinental clearinghouse, Antwerp served as a center for the redistribution of commodities from the Baltic and Mediterranean regions of Europe as well as from Africa, Asia, and the New World, and, as such, was the nexus of a trade network that encompassed the entire globe. Yet Antwerp’s position at the heart of the world economy was ephemeral; its economic power lasted scarcely more than …
