In October of 1986, representatives of the VIA Metropolitan Transit System contacted the Center for Archaeological Research prior to construction on their bus parking lot that occupies the area above a section of the historic San Pedro Acequia. It was decided at that time that limited testing to define and locate the extent of the acequia remaining and determine if monitoring of further operations should be conducted. The excavations were accomplished in December of 1986 and a profile of the acequia recorded. At that time monitoring was delayed until the anticipated relocation of a fuel storage tank was to be …

The purpose of this project was to obtain information to guide planning to alleviate drainage problems within the compound of the mission. Four separate areas were tested. Of these, only one uncovered structural remains that might be impacted by the drainage swales planned to carry rain water through the east and south walls and away from the standing structures. At that location, careful measurement of comparative elevations of ground and top of wall revealed that the planned drainage would be possible without damage to the wall. Travis & Associates, Inc., to perform an archival research and field survey of 60 acres under consideration for the expansion of the Mill Pond Park within the City of San Saba. The research and survey were conducted by Research Associate Waynne Cox on April 21, 22 and 23. No evidence of either prehistoric or historic occupation was located within the survey area; however, archival research revealed further information concerning the nature and age of the mill for which the park was named. During August of 1992, staff archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted surface survey, mapping, and subsurface testing adjacent to Asylum and No-Name Creeks under contract with the San Antonio River Authority in conjunction with a channel rectification project. Particular attention was given to locating cultural materials associated with the nearby San Juan Acequia. No significant cultural resources were located at either location.

The Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio was contracted by the Parks and Recreation Department, City of San Antonio to conduct archival and survey testing on 43 acres of land in western San Antonio at Leon Creek prior to establishing a municipal baseball stadium. The past history of the site was investigated and a survey and shovel testing was conducted on July 8-9, 1993. No indications of archaeological resources were discovered, therefore, no further investigations were recommended.

11le second of three seasons of Phase III data recovery at Justiceburg Reservoir (Lake Alan Henry), located on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, was conducted during the summer of 1991. 11le work included survey of dam borrow areas and site recording in and near these construction zones, limited work at selected rock art sites, geological investigation of an upland playa, and intensive investigations at two primarily Protohistoric period archeological sites.

At the turn of the twentieth century, southeastern Kentucky remained a sparsely settled region where traditional values abounded. Throughout society, funeral rites and changes in them evince values of family, community, and religion. Visitors to the area, whether settlement-school teachers, preachers, or researchers, vividly described deathbeds, burials, and funeral occasions which illuminate local values.

Reflecting the writers' urban prejudices, these Journals and publications along with contemporary newspaper accounts provide insight into southeastern Kentucky mourning customs during the years 1880 to 1915. At one time, the Kibei were perceived as "a minority within a minority" (Me Williams, 1944: 322) who were "distrusted in both America and Japan" (1944:321). But today, the Kibei are hardly distinguishable from the Nisei as they both enter the evening of their lives. Raised in both America and Japan, but strongly influenced in their formative years by Japanese cultural values and beliefs, they were often perceived differently by their own family, by the Japanese American community, and by the American community at large. This report presents the results of cultural resources monitoring and survey activities connected with a Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Task Force Six (JTF-6) project in southern Hudspeth and Culberson, western Jeff Davis, and northern Presidio Counties, Texas. These cultural resource activities were prompted by road improvement activities initiated by the U.S. Border Patrol. The road improvement activities were designed to aid the U.S. Border Patrol in their battle against illegal drug trade and smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border. Phase III data recovery investigations at one historic and three prehistoric sites, augmented by additional survey and off-site geological investigations, were conducted at Lake Alan Henry (formerly Justiceburg Reservoir) on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, during the fall and winter of 1990-1991. Descriptive data from this first of three field seasons of data recovery are presented here in anticipation of a final synthetic report that will relate all the investigations to a series of research design hypotheses. The Kadohadacho, or Great Chiefs, of the Caddo Nation left their home in the Great Bend of the Red River in Arkansas in 1790 because of disease and Osage depredations and moved south, joining a related tribe, the Petit Caddo, on the floodplain of the Red River above present-day Shreveport. In 1800, when the Great Raft began to affect the area, the Caddos moved to higher ground on Sodo Lake (a complex of five lakes that later came to be called Caddo, Clear, Cross, Shifttail, and Soda). This is a brief report on an archeological survey of James Bayou in East Texas that was organized to find the site of a large Historic Caddo Indian village that was reported to be in the area. Much is known about the village people. They were Kadohadacho Caddo from the Great Bend region of the Red River in Southwest Arkansas who had migrated to the area now known as James Bayou about 1800. The population of the village they established was reported to be near 500 people, and they stayed in the East Texas and Northwest Louisiana area into the …

This paper will examine the phenomenon of Native American-Anglo-American integration on the frontier of Northeastern Texas during the 19th century. First, a brief overview of the historic setting will be presented on where and how this integration took place and who were the primary players. Second, we discuss the material cultural manifestations of this interaction, and what problems it presents for interpreting the archaeological record. Finally, we conclude that what have been previously described and defined as typical 19th century Anglo-American frontier homesteads of Northeastern Texas warrant a different interpretive perspective, and in fact, many of these "typical" first wave …

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to replace a bridge on FM 560 at Barkman Creek, just north of Hooks, Texas. The bridge replacement will not cause direct impacts to archaeological sites, but the bridge location requires that a small segment of Barkman Creek be channelized to control erosion and flooding.

During routine survey, TxDOT personnel determined that the channelization would disturb site 41BW422. Testing was scheduled for June 1991 in order to determine the site's eligibility for the national register.

Based on the results from these investigations, 41BW422 appears to be an open campsite dating to an Archaic …

Archaeological test excavations were performed at the historical archaeological site 41BZ89 on the 12th of October 1992. The excavations revealed a highly predictable horizontal distribution of artifacts over the site. They indicate an occupation beginning, apparently in the late 1880s extending into the 1950s (the 1950s occupation may represent reuse by hunters or a campsite for stock handlers). At least two building phases are evident in the structures. Preliminary archival investigations suggest that the property was occupied by a family named Foster at the time of the construction of the residence. Archaeological testing was undertaken at 41DN345 by the author in order to determine horizontal and vertical boundaries of the site, cultural context, and possible eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (in accordance with 36 CFR, Part 800) and State Landmark status.
