Sculptors Of The Realm: Classic Maya Artists' Signatures And Sculptural Style During The Reign Of The Piedras Negras Ruler 7, John Ellis Montgomery

Art & Art History ETDs

The discovery of hieroglyphic artists' signatures on monuments of the Classic Maya represents a turning point for the study of Precolumbian art. As key elements in the retrieval of artists from long-standing conditions of anonymity, artists' signatures theoretically afford the scholar an opportunity to follow the careers and sculptural repertoire of individual artists, allowing recognition of the artist's style over time and on unsigned monuments. However. while various studies have tried to identify individual sculptors solely on the basis of style, to date no project working in the medium of stone monuments has explored the relationship between signatures and style, …

Large Noses And Changing Meanings In Sixteenth-Century German Prints, Alison Stewart Dec 1995

Large Noses And Changing Meanings In Sixteenth-Century German Prints, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Woodcuts produced by the Nuremberg school during the early sixteenth century provide insights into the history of taste, in particular the changing nature of the bawdy aesthetic so prevalent in the art of the time. Sebald Beham's Nose Dance of c. 1534 (fig. 170) offers a good case in point.' The print represents in the foreground a group of large-nosed men and one woman, and a fool who exposes himself (at lower right). By the early seventeenth century the woodblock had been altered, removing most of the offensive areas -- the large noses and some of the revealed body parts …

Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem De Koonig, Jud Yalkut

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

While the words of figurative art and abstract expressionism may seem to be eons apart for the average viewer, it was the premise of "Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem de Kooning" to explore, in the worlds of curator David Leach, "a shared attitude regarding the essentials of image making." In the collision of realism and abstraction which highlighted a long period of East Coast painting characterized by these two major figures. Leach has seen a love of color and "a strong interest in shape" as well as "a love for the fast-moving gestural mark."

Les Linteaux En Batière Romans D'Auvergne. Recherche Sur La Typologie Et Les Origines, William Folkestad, Joan Nilsson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities

The pentagonal lintel common to Romanesque churches of the Auvergne region of France appears first in Carolingian church architecture. There are indications that, because pentagonal lintels result from the same sculptural technique used to produce sarcophagi lids from the Roman through the Ottonian periods, this peculiar lintel form may have been derived from a widespread quarry practice that facilitated its adoption as a regular architectural element. The pentagonal lintels of the Auvergne are characterized by three distinct lintel formats consisting of various combinations of plain, painted, or sculpted lintels and plain, ornamented, or sculpted tympana. Pentagonal lintels provide insights into …

From Promised Lands To Promised Landfill: The Iconography Of Oregon's Twentieth-Century Utopian Myth, Jeffry Lloyd Uecker May 1995

From Promised Lands To Promised Landfill: The Iconography Of Oregon's Twentieth-Century Utopian Myth, Jeffry Lloyd Uecker

Dissertations and Theses

The state of Oregon often has been viewed as a utopia. Figures of speech borrowed from the romantic sublime, biblical pilgrimage, economic boosterism, and millenialist fatalism have been used to characterize it. The visual arts also have responded to Oregon's utopian myth. During the nineteenth century, the landscape was a primary focus for utopian art. In the twentieth century, past human achievements, recreation, agriculture, and industry have joined the environment as themes which inspire utopian imagery. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that twentieth-century art that responds to Oregon's utopian myth has given rise to an iconography which …

Anatomy Of A Log House In Adams County, Pennsylvania And Its Unspoken Language, Elwood W. Christ Jan 1995

Anatomy Of A Log House In Adams County, Pennsylvania And Its Unspoken Language, Elwood W. Christ

Adams County History

Sixteen years after the end of the Revolution, and on the eve of the formation of Adams county, the United States became embroiled in a "quasi-war" with France (1797-1801) which strained the federal treasury. As a result of the diplomatic disagreement, Congress approved several bills to fund America's military build-up. One of these, the U.S. Evaluation Tax of July 9, 1798, was signed into law to raise two million dollars in revenues. The direct or "window tax" was levied based on landholdings, buildings and the number of glass lights, and slaves-in essence, a federal property tax.

Although the "window tax" …
