Die Kunst Als Ausdrucksmittel Der Inneren Welt Hermann Hesses, Debra Lynn Vaul Jul 1987

Die Kunst Als Ausdrucksmittel Der Inneren Welt Hermann Hesses, Debra Lynn Vaul

Dissertations and Theses

Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1987

Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The first three chapters establish the historical context for understanding what happened to the Germans in Brazil during the period of the war in Europe and its immediate aftermath, 1914 to 1920. The large pattern of German settlement in Brazil, offered in Chapter I, is followed by a study of German ethnic institutions--churches, schools, societies--and the German-language press to reveal literacy levels, religious and linguistic characteristics, and the measure of assimilation (or lack thereof) into Brazilian society. Ethnic group relations, perceptions, and images, along with attendant concerns and fears, are analyzed next to show how and why the Brazilian majority …

Electric Affinities: Arnim And Schelling's Naturphilosophie, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jan 1987

Electric Affinities: Arnim And Schelling's Naturphilosophie, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

From Goethe to the present, the proper reception of the works of Achim von Amim has suffered from their illusion of dissonance. Recent criticism, however, has demonstrated structural complexity where once was seen structural confusion. This study synthesizes two trends in the post-war reception of Arnim and demonstrates, with Isabella von Agypten as example, that a fundamental electromagnetic cosmology informs Arnim's poetics.

The Way Through The Human-Shaped Snow , Saul Myers Jan 1987

The Way Through The Human-Shaped Snow , Saul Myers

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This essay interprets Paul Celan's "Weggebeizt" as a concentrated recasting of major themes in the Book of Job. It attempts to show how the poet may have constructed the poem out of a close interrogation of passages in Job, including glosses and cryptic translations of the idiosyncratic Hebrew text. Talk of biblical "echoes" or "influences" is eschewed in favor of a method of parallel reading by which Celan's new-forged words are referred back to key words and phrases in the argument between Job and God. The main points of contact between Job and "Weggebeizt" are: 1) conflation of …
