The Young Adult Fantasy genre is often written off as a useless, or immature form of writing. However, there are studies that prove that this specific genre is not only engaging, but it is also empowering for young readers. By writing toward adolescent readers, authors are able to promote various ways in which their characters adjust or interact with their surroundings, which also influences their readers’ self and social awareness. The dynamics of power between the privileged and those who must be subordinate to them was glaringly apparent at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. While natives from many countries were displayed in ethnographic villages, the Irish were represented in the Irish Industrial Exposition concession on the Pike. A group of ninety performers came from Ireland to show their skills this concession; among these were a troupe of actors from Dublin. In discussing the prints and drawings chosen for this study, I wish to consider mostly subject matter and composition, giving less mention to technique. The three forms of printmaking used are intaglio, collagraph, and woodcut. A specific theme was not chosen for these prints. Since printmaking has been such a relatively new experience of expression for me, I chose to concentrate this study on the printmaking process.

This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. A play or conflict was set up between these two things; the success of the play determined the success of the painting. The factors used to judge success are basically those classical rules of composition dealing with balance: visual weight of areas, complexity, and color. It is the purpose of this study to explore the process of salt-glazing and to develop a representative range of colored salt glazes by the application of soluble and insoluble metallic salts to the surface of the clay bodies. Varying percentages of clay forming constituents and metallic salts were tested to determine their effects on the range and characteristics of the colors obtained, and the ability of the clay body to take a salt-glaze. This study was commenced as an investigation into the aesthetics of existentialism as applied to contemporary art in America, particularly painting. This student believes that to the artist who recognizes the absurdity of his existence, irony is the natural mode of expression. It is the purpose of this study (1) to portray in visual, graphic form the negative consequences resulting from inhumanitarian acts man inflicts upon himself and others; (2) to delineate these actions in a revealing, subtle manner that is still representative of the facts of reality; (3) to experiment with a diverse range of intaglio printmaking techniques and compositional arrangements which best produce the visual, emotional effects desired.
