The aim of this thesis is to examine critically the novels of Azuela in view of the known facts of the Mexican Revolution principally as they touch upon the religious, social, economic, and political aspects.

Some Recurrences Of The Don Quixote-Sancho Panza Pair In World Literature, J. Angie Wynn

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

It is not the purpose of this study to consider the influence of Don Quixote on World Literature in general, but rather to describe the imitations of Don Quixote in the works of three famous authors. These authors have each created a pair similar to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and each shows in his creation the influence of Cervantes' characters. These authors represent three different national literatures and three successive centuries. They are: Henry Fielding of eighteenth-century England; Alphonse Daudet of nineteenth-century France; and Jacinto Benavente of twentieth-century Spain. We have chosen for this study: Tom Jones, the History …

Lo Castizo In The Theatre Of Jacinto Benavente, Lois M. Beckett Aug 1937

Lo Castizo In The Theatre Of Jacinto Benavente, Lois M. Beckett

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Jacinto Benavente, known as the creator of the modern drama of Spain, has been the subject of controversial opinions. One reason may be that he has continued to write after his own manner and ideas despite the initial reception accorded him by Spanish critics and audiences. Another cause may conceivably be that his theatre differs strikingly in outward appearance from that of the Golden Age. A third reason is undoubtedly that Benavente has come to be popular with his own people after a patient struggle against their indignation, and he has been recognized as a writer of first importance.

A Critical Study Of The Spanish Picaresque Novel And A Comparison Of The Picaresque Elements With Certain Phases Of New Mexican Folklore, Elias W. Telles

To do this, picaresque literature will be studied from the first known novels to the present time. This peculiar form of literature will be compared with Spanish life as well and with the life reflected in the folklore of New Mexico.

Neogongorismo And Gongora In Contemporary Spanish-American Poetry, Clyde M. Denton Jun 1937

Neogongorismo And Gongora In Contemporary Spanish-American Poetry, Clyde M. Denton

In the first place, I wish to clarify somewhat the meaning and scope of the term "neogongorismo" and to show in what respects it resembles and in what respects it differs from gongorism. Secondly, I desire to show the attitude manifested towards Gongora by the contemporary Spanish-American literatos. I shall substantiate my deductions wherever possible with actual critical and poetic references.

Rosas; A Complete Picture, Ruth Taylor Westfall Aug 1936

Rosas; A Complete Picture, Ruth Taylor Westfall

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Rosas is considered the greatest enigma of Latin American history. To some he was a monster; to others and idol. By his persecution of the cultured classes, he made his enemies famous; A gaucho and a federalist, he destroyed his own world, created a nation, and delivered Argentina to his foes. No man was more bitterly hated; nor has any other tyrant been given more attention in literature. Many South American poets in authors or remember solely for their bitter denunciations of the Rosas regime.

To get a complete picture of Rosas it is necessary to take both the contemporary …

The Moral Aspects Of The Dramas Of Tamayo Y Baus, Carroll H. Conway Jan 1934

The Moral Aspects Of The Dramas Of Tamayo Y Baus, Carroll H. Conway

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to make a critical study of the dramas of Tamayo y Baus with a view to ascertaining whether or not the insistence on a moral tends to weak his dramas. It is the plan of the study to classify the dramas under the following heads: (1) lesser social plays based on moral proverbs, (2) more important plays distinctly social, (3) more important plays generally conceded to be free of any overt attempt to moralize, and (4) other minor plays. The plays of each of these divisions will be carefully studied and specific cases will …

The Spanish Folksong In New Mexico, Tonia Ann Komadina Jan 1934

The Spanish Folksong In New Mexico, Tonia Ann Komadina

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

When the Spaniards came to New Mexico, driven by a lust for gold, they brought with them the tradition of song which has been an inestimable treasure for succeeding generations. Their descendants and the descendants of the settlers who came north from Mexico clung to the precedent established by their ancestors; they sang old songs, composed new ones, and passed them down to their children by word of mouth transmission.

In this study an attempt has been made to trace briefly the development of the song in its various forms, from the sixteenth century to the present day canción de …

Cuentos Populares Españoles De Nuevo México, Lolita H. Pooler Jan 1930

Cuentos Populares Españoles De Nuevo México, Lolita H. Pooler

New Mexico Spanish Folk-Tales, Arthur L. Campa Jan 1930

New Mexico Spanish Folk-Tales, Arthur L. Campa

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The folk-tale is one of the most fascinating forms of folk-lore that can be studied. When a good story is told in the family circle (in many cases the entire village is one large family) or in a gathering of friends, the question: "Where did you read that?" never arises. Neither do the hearers make a written record of the tale they have just listened to. It is an accepted custom that all "cuentos" are committed to memory.
