Swiss Heritage Preserved At New Glarus Museum, Duane H. Freitag
Swiss Heritage Preserved At New Glarus Museum, Duane H. Freitag
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Born of Depression-era nostalgia, the Swiss Historical
Village at New Glarus, Wisconsin, continues to be among the state’s
most well-known ethnic heritage sites.
Its development over many years was accomplished by a mix
of descendants of the colonists from Canton Glarus who founded the
community in 1845, later immigrants from Switzerland, and now non-
Swiss who have moved to New Glarus and have embraced its history.
Today the museum complex consists of 14 buildings focusing on
various aspects of the community’s past. Visitors can tour the buildings
on their own or with a guide who provides additional interpretation.

It is a pleasure to greet everyone and to wish you good fortune
in all that you do. I deeply appreciate your interest in and continued
support for the Swiss American Historical Society.
The continued problems with COVID-19 virus has forced
changes in how the Swiss American Historical Society (SAHS)
operates. Even though many attempts have been made to return to
normal operations in 2021, there remain challenges; but I am very
pleased to report that many functions of the SAHS have been stellar in
2021. Please note the following.
The Battle Of Dornach 1499: A Contest Between Two Early Tactical Infantries, Albert Winkler
The Battle Of Dornach 1499: A Contest Between Two Early Tactical Infantries, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In July of 1499, two well-trained tactical infantries fought
at the Battle of Dornach when the Swiss peasants and Swabian
mercenaries or Landsknechte met in a major engagement for the first
time. The Swiss infantry had been dominating battlefields in many
parts of Europe for decades, but the Battle of Dornach was a close
contest demonstrating that Swiss dominance might be over and a new
age of infantries was soon to begin. While tactical infantries had been
deployed on the field of battle for centuries, this was one of the few
times in the Middle Ages that two of them …

Glarus And Scranton: Benefits And Costs Of Industrialization, Jürg K. Siegenthaler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This article is based on my book, Konflikte der
Industrialisierung: Industrie, Raum und Gesellschaft in Glarus und
Scranton 1840-1914, a study which examines and compares the
industrialization process in its path of success as well as the social costs
it entails. The two cases of comparison concern different industries,
but resemble each other regarding region (a valley), the time period,
and the massive environmental transformations during their histories
of industrialization.

Swiss American Historical Society Review
(First published in 1926)
To my mind the greatest interest of the world is the life of man!
His sacrifices, his service, his sorrow; his love, success and disaster
are all the unfathomably mysterious thing called Life. The harder his
trials, the more his tribulations, the greater his writhing for justice and
beauty—the richer his life and the greater his appreciation of it.
Bernstadt: The Last Swiss Colony, Jan Sparkman
Bernstadt: The Last Swiss Colony, Jan Sparkman
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The final attempt by Swiss immigrants to develop an independent colony in the United States was made in Laurel County, Kentucky, in 1881. This settlement was the result of efforts on the part of Kentucky’s newly-formed Bureau of Immigration to compensate for the fact that the state had been all but ignored by European immigrants in the past. This endeavor was assisted by the active intervention of three men in Switzerland—Otto Brunner, Paul Schenk, and Karl Imobersteg—who were eager to capitalize on Kentucky’s deficiency.

Political Procrastination: Swiss Neutrality And World War Ii, Maria Ott
Political Procrastination: Swiss Neutrality And World War Ii, Maria Ott
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Among the various facts about World War II that have become practically common knowledge, the neutral response of Switzerland stands out as particularly well-known. In recent years, this renowned reaction has been scrutinized, with many accusing Switzerland of at best problematic indifference to the affairs of the world during this time and at worst near collaboration with Axis powers, particularly Nazi Germany. Though the nation cannot boast an entirely clean ethical record when it comes to its involvement in the wartime economics, these accusations seem exaggerated. The tradition of neutrality held by Switzerland for decades and its vulnerable position at …

The Battle Of The Rosebud And The Contribution Of The Swiss Captain Alexander Johann Sutorius, Albert Winkler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The Battle of the Rosebud was one of the most significant engagements between the United States Army and the Native Americans in the history of the American West. It was a close contest, and the participation of many courageous men in the army made a big difference. This number included Captain Alexander Johann Sutorius from Switzerland who made valuable contributions for the army in both the campaign and battle.

Switzerland In The Life And Works Of . . . John Le Carré (1931-2020), Matthias Lerf, Richard Hacken, Translator, Annotator
Swiss American Historical Society Review
John le Carré lived at the southwestern tip of England in Cornwall while his masterful spy novels take place all around the world. Yet he always emphasized that Switzerland was his second home, and he spoke excellent German. During an interview in Bern’s Hotel Bellevue in 2010, on which this article is based, he even sprinkled in a few dialect phrases. He said he speaks “es bitzeli” [a bit of] Bernese German, but in general he avoided it, since it would call forth a torrent of words in response that he could not handle. In other matters as …

A great deal has been published concerning emigration from German-speaking, Alemannic Switzerland. The present book fulfills the great need to give more attention to the French speaking cantons of the western part of Switzerland, La Suisse romande.
To Touch The Heavens: A Short Story, Sarah Hedrick
To Touch The Heavens: A Short Story, Sarah Hedrick
Swiss American Historical Society Review
A light Swiss breeze blew through Heidi’s curly blonde hair as she and her grandfather Adolph walked along the mountain path. They had been walking up the mountainside for several hours and were nearing the top. Heidi couldn’t wait to get to the mountaintop; it was the one part of the mountain that she had never been to before. Her grandfather told her that when you were at the top, you’re up so high that you can almost reach up and touch the heavens. However, the trek was quite long, and Heidi had never gone that far up the mountain …
Book Review: Seidler-Hux, Monica, Gottfried Kellers Feuriger Freund: Johann Ulrich Müller––Romanfigur, Baumeister Und Kartograf Der Usa [Gottfried Keller’S Fiery Friend: Johann Ulrich Müller–– Character In A Novel, Architect, Builder And Cartographer Of The Usa], Richard Hacken
Swiss American Historical Society Review
It is safe to say that an investigation into the life of Johann Ulrich Müller would scarcely warrant the rapt scholarly attention that it does were it not for the presumptive impact of that individual on Gottfried Keller––who was and is perhaps the prime Swiss exponent of literary realism in the eyes of the world. It has been established that Keller’s novel, Der grüne Heinrich [Green Henry], closely parallels the novelist’s own life story, episodically shifting into near-direct autobiography. One memorable character in the novel is closely based on Keller’s friendship with Müller, which had originally begun when the …
From Redemptive Suffering To Redemptive Reconciliation In The Authorship Of Johanna Spyri, Frederick Hale
From Redemptive Suffering To Redemptive Reconciliation In The Authorship Of Johanna Spyri, Frederick Hale
Swiss American Historical Society Review
That Johanna Spyri (1827-1901), best known for her Heidi books, gained renown as one of Switzerland’s most popular and widely translated authors is beyond dispute. The two companion volumes Heidi’s Lehr- und Wanderjahre and Heidi kann brauchen, was es gelernt hat were published in Germany in 1880 and 1881, respectively, and have been reprinted and published in more abridgements, translations, and cultural adaptations than nearly all other works of their era. Several of Spyri’s many other books also enjoyed popularity and were read not only in German, but also in various other languages on both sides of the Atlantic.

Beyond Muesli And Fondue -- The Swiss Contribution To Culinary History: A Summary Of Ambassador Martin Dahinden’S Book, C. Naseer Ahmad
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Breaking bread together has deep rooted spiritual foundations for strengthening fellowship and in easing tensions among people of different persuasions. So, it is propitious that former Swiss Ambassador to United States Dr. Martin Dahinden, who is a seasoned Swiss diplomat with exquisite tastes and a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience wrote a book Beyond Muesli and Fondue, which describes Swiss contributions to culinary history.
