Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker
Landscape Imagery In Shelley's Major Poetry: The Forest And Related Settings, Ingrid J. Parker
English Language and Literature ETDs
The repeated use of the journey motif and the extended descriptions of landscape in Shelley's major poems suggest that journey and landscape are either allegorical or symbolic, or both. Furthermore, biographical evidence indicates that Shelley was particularly attracted to quest literature, and that he responded strongly to specific modes of travelling and to particular types of landscape.
The analysis of landscape imagery in Shelley's shorter poems reveals that natural settings such as forests, caves, bodies of water, and mountains are habitually used as images for the human mind. The journey through landscape thus becomes logically a mental journey. It is …

Preliminary Calendar Of The Nevil Shute Norway Manuscripts Microfilm, Howard L. Applegate
Preliminary Calendar Of The Nevil Shute Norway Manuscripts Microfilm, Howard L. Applegate
The Courier
In 1971 Syracuse University Library made an agreement with the National Library of Australia, whereby the National Library microfilmed the complete manuscript collection of Nevil Shute Norway's papers in its possession and sent the microfilm to the Arents Library of Syracuse University. Syracuse makes this film available to responsible scholars with the understanding that users of the microfilm will cite the National Library of Australia as the repository owning the original manuscripts and will make all references to the numbering identification system prepared by the National Library.
In Search Of Nevil Shute, Julian Smith
In Search Of Nevil Shute, Julian Smith
The Courier
Because it contains much unpublished autobiographical material and early or variant drafts of his published fiction, the Nevil Shute Norway manuscript collection on microfilm at Syracuse University offers an unusually fine chance to study in depth a popular writer who brought pleasure to millions of readers through a career spanning three decades.
The essence of "Nevil Shute" is found most properly through his novels, not his life; therefore, the major emphasis here is on his fiction. But as his fiction grew out of his experiences and interests in a way not common among popular writers, a brief guide to his …

The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols
The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols
Master's Theses
The terms decadence, aestheticism, art for art's sake have been used interchangeably to describe the movement in literature that flowered during the 1890's in England. Despite the fact that the English aesthetics and decadents were a relatively small group, they were vocal and colorful. Many contributed to the numerous aesthetic and semi-aesthetic periodicals with such titles as The Chamelion, The Butter, The Rose Leaf, and The Hobby Horse. In this way the decadents presented the new trends in art and literature to the general public. In London during the 1890's the literacy taverns were full of these decadent artists who …

Honors Theses
This is a self-centered, idiosyncratic wordblow. This paper is not an academic undertaking, it is more of a record of myself and my condition of being over the past two years. The paper is arranged chronologically from 1969 to the present and I have tried to combine philosophy and writing into making it a more understandable paper.
Backgrounds Of Mexican American Literature, Philip D. Ortego
Backgrounds Of Mexican American Literature, Philip D. Ortego
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study attempts to define the heretofore amorphous body of Mexican American literature as well as providing an understanding of what American literature should have been: that is, a literary fabric not exclusively woven on the Atlantic frontier by the descendants of New England Puritans and Southern Cavaliers, but one woven in the American Southwest as well, and with marvelous Hispanic threads which reach back not only to the literary heritage of the European continent but also the very heart of the Graeco-Roman world.
Like the British roots in the new American soil, the Hispanic literary roots have yielded a …

Existentialism As Reflected In The Imagery Of William Styron's Work, Sally Yates Wood
Existentialism As Reflected In The Imagery Of William Styron's Work, Sally Yates Wood
Master's Theses
In Lie Down in Darkness, The Long March and Set This House on Fire. William Styron studies the modern condition of man and his world. Styron describes this situation according to an existential definition of existence. The world of his novels is depicted as a lonely and bleak realm where man finds no external means of support. As a result of these conditions, man flounders aimlessly. The reason for this erratic behavior is that man relies too heavily on finding guidance from the outside world. Styron contends that man will continue to stumble so miserably, until he realizes that he …
Mrs. Gaskell's Industrial Novels: Mary Barton And North And South, Yvette D. Marambaud
Mrs. Gaskell's Industrial Novels: Mary Barton And North And South, Yvette D. Marambaud
Master's Theses
Since 1910, when Mrs. Gaskell's centenary was celebrated, few articles have been written about her. Except for her Life of Charlotte Bronte, she is not really well known in America. Few people read her tales or her short stories, and her novels are quite neglected. Yet her industrial novels, Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1855), were very successful when they were first published. Mary Barton was an immediate success - perhaps in part because of the controversies it aroused.
A Generative Approach To Poetic Syntax, Pamela Rodberg
A Generative Approach To Poetic Syntax, Pamela Rodberg
Culminating Projects in English
Poetic syntax has always been of interest to teachers and scholars alike. Up to the present, however, there has been no workable or reliable means for such analysis, and those forms employed thus far have often left much to be desired in the areas of explanation and illustration. This study presents a new approach to syntactic analysis: generative transformation grammar. It presents basic procedures of generative grammar and applies them to two poems: "Not to Keep" by Robert Frost, and "this man's heart' by e.e. cummings. The results of this analysis illustrates stylistic characteristics unique to these authors and shows …
