“Nothing Beautiful Hides Its Face”: The Hiddenness Of Esther In C. S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, John Anthony Dunne
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
C. S. Lewis’ last and arguably best novel, Till We Have Faces, is an impressively nuanced revision and recasting of Apuleius’ short tale of Cupid and Psyche, Books 4–6 of The Golden Ass. Although this ancient myth was the main source for Till We Have Faces, inspiration was no doubt gained from many places. One such influence, previously unnoted, was the biblical book of Esther. This study will note some of the key places where the influence of Esther is detectable, in particular Lewis’ choice of the name “Istra.” This is followed by an investigation into why Esther may have …
How Much Does That Hideous Strength Owe To Charles Williams?, Charles A. Huttar
How Much Does That Hideous Strength Owe To Charles Williams?, Charles A. Huttar
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
do not intend here anything so ambitious as a comprehensive study of the question posed by my title. My purpose in this essay is threefold: in the first section, to augment the case that has been made for one debt to Williams; in the second, to narrow down the demonstrable range of Williams’ influence in another area, that of the Arthurian material in That Hideous Strength; and finally, to point out a commonality in their theory of history that can probably not, however, be considered an instance of oneway influence, but rather an agreement that reflects their shared Christian worldview. …

The Archangel Fragment And C. S. Lewis’S World-Building Project, Brenton D. G. Dickieson, Charlie W. Starr
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
In this article, we argue that, from a few hints in the Bodleian archive and elsewhere, we have discovered C. S. Lewis’s singular attempt at an Archangelic sequel to The Screwtape Letters. By analyzing this small fragment and its contextual clues, we can hear the heaven-scented voice of this anti-Screwtape world. Through this discovery we can unlock hidden links among Lewis’s fiction project of the late 1930s and early 1940s and the ways he created the speculative worlds of those stories, including a spirit of playfulness and discovery, themes critical to his theological perspective, and potential links that draw his …

C. S. Lewis And The Personal Opinion Fallacy, Jason Lepojärvi
C. S. Lewis And The Personal Opinion Fallacy, Jason Lepojärvi
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Excerpt: "Authors sometimes become targets of critics who mistake the views expressed by their characters, plot, or atmosphere for the views held by the authors themselves. Consequently, as authors begin justifiably to fear that the opinions expressed in their art will be equated with their own real-life opinions, many begin censoring themselves, thus reducing diversity of perspective and diluting vigor of expression. The present essay reflects on this particular form of literary misreading and its contribution to other literary maladies....For reasons that relate to both the nature of imaginative literature and to Lewis as a writer, readers and critics of …
C. S. Lewis And The Historical Imagination, Jamin Metcalf, K. Alan Snyder
C. S. Lewis And The Historical Imagination, Jamin Metcalf, K. Alan Snyder
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
What role should the imagination play in historical inquiry? Much has been written about how Lewis’s understanding of the imagination influenced both his literary and apologetic work. However, very little has been said about how his view of the imagination influenced his work as a literary historian. Throughout Lewis’s career at both Oxford and Cambridge, he argued for a unique approach that privileged the role of the imagination both in the study and composition of history.
