Toward Intercultural Competence : Intercultural Training For Japanese Students In The United States, Tomoko Harpster
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project explored how study abroad program administrators can help Japanese students develop intercultural competence through predeparture and ongoing intercultural training so as to improve their capacity to adapt effectively to American cultural norms. The ultimate purpose of this thesis project was to help Japanese students who were studying in the U.S. balance their involvement with their peer group from Japan and build relationships with people in the U.S. in order to fully experience American culture. To provide a context for this study, a review of the literature was conducted regarding the challenges faced by Japanese students while studying …
The Concept Of Liberation In The Yoga Sutras Of Patañjali, Anna Rebecca Price
The Concept Of Liberation In The Yoga Sutras Of Patañjali, Anna Rebecca Price
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The fundamental thesis of the analyst is that the ills or humanity are due to ignorance and more particularly to self-ignorance and that the way to self-healing is the way to self-knowledge.
The purpose of this thesis is to show how these Yoga sutras of Patanjali contain the methods for the regenerating and recreating factor in human life; and that these methods can be carried into present-day, practical living.

A Comparative Study Of The Problem Of Abstraction Versus Experience Between East And West (As Exemplified In Selected Eastern And Western Sages), Leo Jacob Zeff
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a comparative study of the teachings of a number of Eastern sages and a representative of modern Western depth psychology in connection with the problem of abstraction versus experience (or, thinking about instead of experiencing}. This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere.
The introductory chapter will present the problem being investigated, why and how it is considered significant, and how it will be dealt with in this study. The second chapter will contain a presentation of the various sages to be considered here, how and why they …
A Study Of The United States-Korea Treaty Of 1882, Rai Won Pak
A Study Of The United States-Korea Treaty Of 1882, Rai Won Pak
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study covers not only the cause of Korea’s entry into the world affairs with the United States in 1882, but also it is a study of modern power politics in the Far East, in which Korea played a significant role.
The importance of the Korea position in international affairs has been dimly treated by the Western World - yet, she is a nation populated by approximately thirty millions; the thirteenth largest nation in the world, and Koreans are the most homogenous people in the world; the nation, which is thrust down off the coast of Asia between the thirty-fifth …
A Survey Of The English Language In The Philippines And The Various Filipino Dialects And The Development Of Tagalog As A National Language, Vidal Serrano Mata
A Survey Of The English Language In The Philippines And The Various Filipino Dialects And The Development Of Tagalog As A National Language, Vidal Serrano Mata
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This Master Thesis aims to discuss the language mix-up in the Philippines. Originally, the people speak different dialects because of the lack of interaction due to geographical isolation. The Spaniards brought Spanish to them, which became the official language of the government until the Americans came and made English the medium of instruction in the school.
The trouble lies in the fact that English-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want English only, Spanish-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Spanish only, Tagalog-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Tagalog only while non-Tagalog-speaking Filipinos are either indifferent or prefer their respective dialects. This is the uncomfortable mess created by the principles of democracy …
A Historical Study Of The Stilwell Road, Gordon Cornelius Thomas
A Historical Study Of The Stilwell Road, Gordon Cornelius Thomas
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The problem investigated in this thesis is the history of the Stilwell Road, from its beginning in 1920, as the old Burma Road, to its completion, re-naming, use in 1945, and death in 1946 .
The study of this problem justifies itself for various reasons, namely: (1) The Stilwell Road was severely needed by China as the only thoroughfare to the outside world. Chinese needs were of morale , equipment and arms- both large and small, and the training and advisory leadership of existing man-power.
China having stood alone against the Japanese since 1937 needed the psychological boost that was …
The Role Of Cooperatives In Chinese Economic Reconstruction Since 1928, Alma Schocke
The Role Of Cooperatives In Chinese Economic Reconstruction Since 1928, Alma Schocke
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The study of Chinese economic and social problems requires that certain fundamental Chinese conditions be kept constantly in mind by the Western student, lest he attempt to analyze from the contemporary economic and social viewpoints of his own country. Accomplishments and plans must both be considered in relation to what has gone before and what is within the realm of possibility under given conditions, rather than by comparison with accomplishments and plans in other countries where the basic situation is entirely different.
The object of this paper is to place cooperatives in relation to the to the reconstruction as a …
The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura
The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The world recognizes Toyohiko Kagawa as the St. Francis of Japan. His heart is one of pure love like that of St. Francis, but his battle has not been carried on by means of the sermon in a religious denomination. With a heart of love Kagawa has stood in the streets and would save the lives of the people. This is because he was born in 20th century Japan and not in Italy of the Middle Ages.
Fifteen hundred years after the fall of ancient Rome the world once more is about to undergo a mighty change. At this time …
