Crayons And Yarn, Danielle G. Holloway

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poems, creative nonfiction, and short stories, all original pieces of writing produced while completing the Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. The poems come from my own life, and while they are not intended to be a cohesive narrative, arranged in this order they tell a story of growing up, leaving home, and finding love. The nonfiction pieces come from a collection centered around my experiences in high school marching band, though a love story is present there as well. The short stories also draw heavily from my own experiences and passions, exploring themes that are important …

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard Nov 2013

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poetry, nonfiction, and one short fiction story. Two nonfiction pieces appearing here, “Welcome to the Armory” and “Survey: Headphones” have also been published in the online journal Prick of the Spindle. All pieces were written between August of 2012 and May 2013. I consider this collection the best of my college writing.

I pay extra attention to sounds in my pieces. I also try to achieve a certain level of ostranenie—a poetry term that means “making the familiar strange”—because I am fascinated with the attempt. This Level of Living refers to a state of high awareness, of …

En L'Air: A Collection Of Poetry Written In The Air, Pamela Herron

Pamela Herron

En l'air is Herron's first poetry collection and grew out of many sleepless flights looking down on the earth below. The poems intertwine the world of a destructive species and the environment that suffers through such destruction.

A Poet Drives A Truck: Poems By And About Lowell A. Levant, Lowell A. Levant Sep 2013

A Poet Drives A Truck: Poems By And About Lowell A. Levant, Lowell A. Levant

University of Akron Press Publications

Lowell A. Levant had the twin vocations of poet and truck driver. He rose to prominence in Berkeley in the sixties as a member of the Artists, Musicians, Poets, and Sympathizers Local of the I.W.W., whose work was collected in Poems Read in the Spirit of Peace and Gladness. Readers will notice four main qualities of his poems. First, as observed by his mentor, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gary Snyder, there is “… the complex depth of his writing about work, machinery, trucks, equipment, repair, maintenance -- all in a deceptively slightly befuddled voice that masks the surprising competence of …

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips Aug 2013

Signaletics, Emilia Phillips

University of Akron Press Publications

Signaletics pits the measured against the immeasurable, the body against identity, and the political against the personal. With a defunct 19th-century body measurement system of criminal identification as a foundation, the poems move in and out of history, only to arrive at the immediate voice of a speaker, distraught about the death of a child brother, the remove of a father, and the estrangement of the personal with the politics of her country.

Particular Scandals: A Book Of Poems, Julie L. Moore Jun 2013

Particular Scandals: A Book Of Poems, Julie L. Moore

Faculty Books

Broad in scope--theological, ecological, and personal--and acutely particular in details--witnessed and lived--the affecting poems in Particular Scandals explore how one endures suffering, avoiding the clichés of both bitterness and transcendence. Thus, while Moore's poetry depicts the debilitating ruin illness wreaks, it also embraces the beauty and mystery in creation, in faith, even in tribulation itself. At the book's core is pure paradox and insightful integration, wedding Christmas--Christ's incarnation and eventual, willing sacrifice--to pain and grief. Thus, on the heels of Moore's multiple surgeries and amid her husband's serious heart problem--both while in their forties--come "flashes of hallelujah" and songs knit …
