Born Katherine Linn Sage near Albany, New York, in 1898, Kay Sage is best known for her “architectonic” landscapes, described as her “private cloudland” in Time magazine. Less well known are her four volumes of poetry published between 1957 and 1962, three in French, one in English. Although her paintings are devoid of living beings, with one notable exception, they are populated with structures and structural elements, which, in her poems, stand in for herself, for her own body, as a supplement to her painted work. This study considers the postmodern effect of masculinities, female empowerment, as well as the canon of Western bildungsroman in an attempt to understand how the narratives have changed over the past 50 years. The World Wars had a devastating impact on the soldiers and citizens that lived and suffered through them. They stood a tremendous toll physically, mentally, and emotionally. For many, if it was even possible, an escape was needed. Any outlet that could provide a way to cope with and verbalize their experiences was an endeavor worth undertaking. The arts, especially poetry, was a way those within the wartime eras could express and process what they had endured.

This project is a creative piece that consists of ten poems and a critical analysis of artistic vocabularies utilized by women writers: Aicha Bassry, Furugh Farrukhzad, and Fatima Mernissi. I argue that their speaking together, especially through multiple voices, is a political act that can be privileged above normative discussions of art currently. This comes from the common worlds they build in their poetic and scholarly work, which despite differences in voice and vocabulary, centralize women. I define artistic vocabulary in this project as the transformation that takes place when image is translated into word. I explore this idea of …

“How to be the Perfect Asian Wife” critiques exploitative power systems that assault female bodies of color in intersectional ways. This work explores strategies of healing and resistance through inserting one’s own narrative of flourishing rather than surviving, while reflecting violent realities. Three large drawings mimic pervasive advertisement language and presentation reflecting the oppressive strategies used to contain women of color. Created with charcoal, watercolor, and ink, these 'advertisements' contrast with an interactive rice bag filled with comics of my everyday experiences. These documentations compel viewers to reflect on their own participation in systems of power.

Contrary to some literary classifications, Edgar Allan Poe’s book-length prose poem Eureka is not intended to be fiction. In Eureka Poe was seriously attempting to advance ‘truth’ about the universe. Poe was doing natural science and poetry in the tradition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and other natural philosophers. Poe’s prose poem is natural scientific astronomy and cosmology, plus natural theology, not science fiction.

Holocaust stems from the Greek word “burnt hole,” but when the word Holocaust is mentioned today it refers to the rise of Nazi Germany in 1933 until the fall in 1945 (Skloot). More specifically, the Holocaust refers to the 11 million persecutions through concentration camps. The Holocaust is widely studied for various reasons, but the biggest reason is that “’we are seekers of understanding in the territory defined by those events” (Skloot 9). Through written work, such as poetry and plays, the Holocaust is brought to life in a more realistic way.

The “art poem” is an intriguing form of poetry. In writing about something that is inherently visual, a poet must remold a work of art into new material, drawing upon the work’s elements of form such as color, line, use of light, contrast, and composition to make his or her own reflective statement, beyond simply describing the artwork’s own content. The End of Her is a collection of poetry that centers on ideas of celebrity, nostalgia, pain and healing, and collective memory. The poems depict the lives and times of tragic women: from Eve to Amy Winehouse. The project touches on both the real and the imagined in examining what it means to be famously tragic, as well as what it means to be a spectator of demise. Interwoven autobiographical pieces reveal the relationship between individual memory and shared history, as the collection positions personal accounts of love and loss in conversation with some of the world’s best-known stories.
